Public Option, Kristin Dolbeare, Nora Heaton, Ellen Thomas, Peter E. Visser

G. R. Boynton's New Media and Politics

American health care woes are no new phenomena, and recent history demonstrates the intensity of the concomitant debate that arises following the proposal of a new system or a special new element-namely, the public insurance option. Early in his tenure, President Clinton dared to undertake daunting reform efforts (including the creation of a public insurance option). Many argue that losing the health care battle hampered Clinton's ability to effectively lead and will damage his long-term reputation. Barack Obama is now deep in the same trenches, and both Democrats and Republicans have begun asking questions: Is it too expensive?; Is ...

Healthcare Abortion, Sara Gomer, Elizabeth Miller Dec 2009

Healthcare Abortion, Sara Gomer, Elizabeth Miller

G. R. Boynton's New Media and Politics

Abortion has always been a women’s rights issue. Women have been fighting for power ever since they have gained the right to vote. It has always been about what women are allowed to act in society. Currently, congress is dealing with a new healthcare reform bill to allow all Americans basic healthcare coverage so no one is uninsured in the United States. However, in the bill, the topic of abortion was amended to not be covered by this new bill because it was said that “moderate democrats” would approve the bill if healthcare wasn’t covered. Our stream is ...

Progressive Tweeting, Eric D. Haberkorn, Ben J. Nielsen, Will Gries

G. R. Boynton's New Media and Politics

Tweeting about health care reform is extremely popular right now and one of the most active groups of people tweeting about it is progressives. We captured the stream of tweets containing the #p2 hash tag that progressives use. The progressives are a unique part of the health care reform tweets because of their extreme views on the topic. The data we captured spanned from 11:01 AM until 2:32 PM on November 20th, 2009, and consisted of 1533 messages. Tweeting using the #p2 hash tag has been fairly unchanged over the past 30 days with the biggest spikes in ...

A recent topic of interest for all political followers is Health Care and the new bill that is trying to be passed through congress giving health care to all people of the United States. This bill was a promise made in Obama’s campaign and he is quickly getting started on pursuing his options. The topic of Health Care is very broad so in order to acquire a more detailed amount of information we decided to research Tweets about Health Care Reform. We chose to use the term “#HCR” so that we could limit the tweets to people talking only ...

Dazzling The Eyes: Television And The Modernization Ideal In 1980s China, Huike Wen Dec 2009

Dazzling The Eyes: Television And The Modernization Ideal In 1980s China, Huike Wen

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is about the intellectual reception of TV in 1980s China. While Chinese media have often been a topic within studies of globalization and global political economy, Chinese TV history still has not gained enough scholarly attention. Chinese scholars' extant studies of TV history have provided valuable knowledge, but a more extensive and critical view of the interaction between TV and culture is still lacking. This dissertation aims to explore Chinese TV history in the pivotal decade of the 1980s from the viewpoint of cultural studies. Using theories of media technology, globalization and gender studies, this dissertation reexamines how ...

Celebrating The Chaos: A Local Re-Examining Of Early U.S. Radio Regulation, James Herbert Pobst Dec 2009

Celebrating The Chaos: A Local Re-Examining Of Early U.S. Radio Regulation, James Herbert Pobst

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation re-examines a particular period of American broadcasting regulation in the 1920s, namely the "chaos" period traditionally labeled as the brief time in between the breakdown of federal radio regulation in early 1926 and the passage of the Radio Act of 1927. Using the ideas of heteroglossia and vernacular discourse drawn respectively from Mikhail Bakhtin and Gerard Hauser, I argue that the media scholarship understanding of chaos needs to be expanded beyond the conventional interpretation of a fatalistic moment which inevitably resulted in the support for broadcast commercialization on a national scale. This theoretical expansion reflects three trends that ...

Emotional Regulation In Infants Of Postpartum Depressed Mothers, Christina Louise Franklin Dec 2009

Emotional Regulation In Infants Of Postpartum Depressed Mothers, Christina Louise Franklin

Theses and Dissertations

A large body of evidence has accumulated which indicates that infants of postpartum depressed mothers are at risk for negative sequelae including later psychopathology. However, methodological difficulties including discordant definitions of postpartum depression and the use of paradigms which used the mother-infant relationship to assess infant emotional expression and regulation have decreased the ability to reach a consensus regarding the nature and transmission of that risk. This study sought to address those methodological difficulties by employing an established paradigm designed to elicit emotionality in infants, the Laboratory Temperament Assessment Battery (Lab-TAB; Goldsmith & Rothbart, 1999).

Participants were 30 women who met ...

Ethnic Voting And Representation: Minority Russians In Post-Soviet States, Holley E Hansen Dec 2009

Ethnic Voting And Representation: Minority Russians In Post-Soviet States, Holley E Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

What factors motivate members of minority groups to vote based on an ethnic attachment? What motivates candidates and political parties to make appeals to specific ethnic groups? I argue that ethnic voting is more likely to emerge when individual socialization experiences and dissatisfaction increase the salience of ethnic identity, contextual factors serve to politicize this salient identity, and the mobilization potential of the ethnic group is high, making it more likely that an ethnic-based appeal will be successful. I test this theory with a combination of regional-level large-N statistical comparisons, case studies, and individual-level survey data.

I primarily examine party ...

The Nurturing Hypothesis: Residence In A Progressive Environment And Its Impact On Political Engagement Among Latinos And Asian Americans In The United States, Hoi Ok Jeong Dec 2009

The Nurturing Hypothesis: Residence In A Progressive Environment And Its Impact On Political Engagement Among Latinos And Asian Americans In The United States, Hoi Ok Jeong

Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation examines how an environment containing politically favorable policies influences political engagement of Latinos and Asian Americans in the United States. The threat hypothesis claims that living in a threatening environment provokes a sense of anxiety, which leads to active engagement in politics. The assumption underlying the hypothesis is that living in a non-threatening, or favorable, environment, conversely, will not motivate individuals to be engaged in politics. The dissertation aims to investigate this untested assumption: How does a favorable environment influence individuals' political involvement? I examine this question using two separate survey data-sets for Latinos and Asian Americans, combined ...

The Connection Between Maternal Depression, Parenting, And Child Externalizing Disorders, Nicole Lynn Shay Dec 2009

The Connection Between Maternal Depression, Parenting, And Child Externalizing Disorders, Nicole Lynn Shay

Theses and Dissertations

Maternal depression has been found to be a risk factor in the development of child psychopathology (Burke, 2003) and more specifically, in the development of child externalizing disorders (Brennan et al., 2000; Hay et al., 2003; Kim-Cohen et al., 2005). The relation between maternal depression and poor parenting has also been identified in a number of contexts (Lovejoy et al., 2000; Shay & Knutson, 2008), as has the relation between poor parenting and child externalizing disorders (Morrell & Murray, 2003; Pevalin et al., 2003). Because maternal depression confers risk on parenting and child outcome, this study was an attempt to reveal the specifics of how maternal depression relates to the development of child externalizing disorders. The proposed model ...

"Serving Sinners, Comforting Saints And Increasing Faith": The Reverend Edythe Stirlen's Imagined Radio Church Community, Arlecia Deandra Simmons

Theses and Dissertations

In the early 1920s, commercial radio presented many possibilities, including the nationalization of the listening audience, professional opportunities for women, the ability for ministers to spread the gospel, and access to the world for geographically isolated listeners. The media ministry of the Rev. Edythe Elem Swartz Stirlen operated outside the confines of a brick-and-mortar church and created an imagined religious community of congregants. Through the Shenandoah, Iowa, based Radio Church of the Air program, the Send Out Sunshine magazine, and the Send Out Sunshine Clubs, Stirlen and her virtual parishioners created images of communion they interpreted and used to maintain ...

Finite Control In Korean, Kum Young Lee Dec 2009

Finite Control In Korean, Kum Young Lee

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores finite control in Korean. An overview of the previous studies of control shows that the mainstream literature on control has consistently argued that referential dependence between an overt matrix argument and an embedded null subject is characteristic of non-finite clauses which contain a PRO subject. Moreover, although some evidence for finite control involving pro in several languages has been presented, a PRO analysis of finite control has been firmly established in the literature.

This thesis, however, argues that the currently established approach to Obligatory Control (OC), which is confined to PRO, cannot account for OC in Korean ...

The Effects Of The Use Of Communication And Negotiation Strategies On L2 Acquisition, Mitsuko Numata Dec 2009

The Effects Of The Use Of Communication And Negotiation Strategies On L2 Acquisition, Mitsuko Numata

Theses and Dissertations

L2 learner's use of communication strategies (CSs) has received an attention since 1970s (Faech & Kasper, 1983; Tarone et al., 1983). Previous studies have focused on identification and classification of CSs, the effectiveness and teachability of CS, the uses of CSs by different proficiency levels in different tasks, and individual differences in CS use. In spite of the varieties in focus of the previous researches, no research has address whether the use of CSs affects L2 acquisition over and beyond the level of sustainment of communication.

Recent studies in classroom acquisition have shown beneficial effects of negotiation during peer conversation on L2 ...
