High-Performance Organizations (Hpos): The Wal-Mart Stores Case Study, Grace S. Thomson

Dr. Grace S. Thomson

Organizational effectiveness is the goal of organizations competing in the changing landscape of global business (Colquitt, LePine, Wesson, 2009). While profitability sustains a firm financially, the well-being of the human capital of the organization is equally important to ensure competitiveness (Carpenter & Sanders, 2008). Collins (2001) posited that effective strategic leaders are those with the capabilities to drive the transformations of the firm into new and profitable models. Firms that are able to transition from good to great companies (Collins, 2001) have leaders who demonstrate to be (1) capable individuals, (2) contributing team members, (3) competent managers, (4) effective leaders, and ...

Spanish Publicly-Subsidised Private Schools And Equality Of School Choice, María Jesús Mancebón-Torrubia, Domingo Perez-Ximenez

Domingo Perez-Ximenez

This study analyses the system of Spanish publicly-subsidised private schools from the perspective of its contribution to the equalisation of opportunities in school choice. The theoretical framework is based on the contributions of researchers into school choice policies, while the empirical application uses a 2005 questionnaire answered by the final-year secondary school students of the Spanish region of Aragon. We conclude that the system of Spanish publicly-subsidised private schools has not entirely facilitated the integration of students from different socioeconomic strata. A probit model is estimated in the last section in order to discover which factors determine the choice of ...

The Janjaweed And The Armed Movements Of Sudan, Professor Issam A.W. Mohamed

Professor Issam A.W. Mohamed

The emergence of the Janjaweed as an armed force working with the government to suppress rebellions in Darfur region outraged the international community. They were marked by brutality, destruction, burning, killings and mass rapes. They were also described as Arabs. However, that was not the whole picture, no one observed the living conditions of the Arabs or how were they victims also as the other inhabitants of Darfur. No one also observed that they were used by the Ingaz government to execute the dirty work and bear the consequences. The Arab tribes however, also had other thoughts as they realized ...

Choices In Grammar Teaching And The Grammar Curriculum, Arshad Abd Samad, Hawanum Hussein Jun 2009

Choices In Grammar Teaching And The Grammar Curriculum, Arshad Abd Samad, Hawanum Hussein

Arshad Abd Samad

The communicative language teaching approach has had a significant impact on the teaching of grammar. In general, the communicative approach, and its objective of communicative competence, has led to a diminished role for grammar teaching. However, of late, numerous voices have advocated a more prominent role for grammar in achieving this objective. As a result, various broad approaches as well as specific techniques have been suggested in teaching grammar to English as a Second language students. Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman, for example, suggests that teachers use the challenge principle in order to identify the challenge a grammatical structure poses according to ...

Rogue Counrty And Potential Cooperation: The United States And Sudan And Feasible Economic Partnership, Professor Issam A.W. Mohamed

Professor Issam A.W. Mohamed

The United States declared Sudan as a rogue country in 1995 due to many political considerations. It has imposed many economic and political sanctions against it since that time which represented hindrance to development and resulted in economic crises. Oil explorations started long time by Total Oil Company and resumed by Chevron that halted her activities in Sudan after the flaring of the civil war between the Northern and Southern parts of the country. That work was resumed in 1996 by Chinese companies and was crowned by success and commercial production in 1999. Although the economic situations of Sudan improved ...

Equality, Race And Gifted Education: An Egalitarian Critique Of Admission To New York City's Specialized High Schools, Steven V. Mazie Apr 2009

Equality, Race And Gifted Education: An Egalitarian Critique Of Admission To New York City's Specialized High Schools, Steven V. Mazie

Steven V. Mazie

Educational programs for gifted students face both philosophical and practical challenges from egalitarians. Some object that gifted schools inherently undermine a commitment to equality in education, while others observe that schools for talented students cater to privileged youth and effectively discriminate against disadvantaged minorities. This article taps into recent theorizing on equality to explore an illuminating case study: admissions policies at New York City’s so-called ‘specialized’ high schools. After dismissing less nuanced proposals on both ends of the spectrum, I draw upon Elizabeth Anderson’s theory of ‘democratic egalitarianism’ to argue that, while schools devoted to talented students could ...

Mexican Higher Education At A Crossroads: Topics For A New Agenda In Public Policies, Jesús F. Galaz-Fontes, Manuel Gil-Antón, Laura E. Padilla-González, Juan J. Sevilla-García, Jorge G. Martínez-Stack, José L. Arcos-Vega

Jesús Francisco Galaz Fontes

After a period of unregulated growth from the 1960s to the late 1980s, public Mexican higher education came to be perceived as a "disaster zone" by the federal government. Starting at that point, several public policies seeking to improve its quality, social pertinence, efficiency and equity have implemented. While impacting positively Mexican higher education in many respects, such policies have had unintended negative effects and, it is contended, they are currently having diminishing gains. This paper identifies six topics that the next generation of public policies should consider if public Mexican higher education is to evolve into a stage in ...

Taxonomy Of Business Ethics Theories, Grace S. Thomson Feb 2009

Taxonomy Of Business Ethics Theories, Grace S. Thomson

Dr. Grace S. Thomson

An increasing interest on ethics in business has resulted in a fruitful production of scholarly research that provides business leaders and decision-makers with references to bridge theory and practice (Cherry, Lee, and Chien, 2003). For an effective application of business ethics theories, it is necessary to comprehend their domains, their external and internal logic, and the specific applications to the ethical issues under analysis (Wempe, 2008).

This document presents a taxonomy of 11 ethical theories applied to business ethics that incorporate grounded theory and conceptual frameworks. As a basis for the construction of this taxonomy, the selection of the theories ...

Paula S. McMillen

Technology proficiency expectations have proliferated in counselor education. Yet, limited information in the counseling literature details how to effectively evaluate or refine online resources from a design/utility standpoint. This description of a small-scale usability study demonstrates a cost-effective strategy for improving counselor education Web sites. Counselor education students completed specific tasks related to the target Web site’s purpose and functionality. Error and completion rates were tracked. Process comments were recorded. Combined qualitative and quantitative results clearly indicated what worked and what did not, allowing the Web site designers to prioritize needed changes in content organization, format/graphics, and ...

Diversifying Science: Underrepresented Student Experiences In Structured Research Programs, Sylvia Hurtado, Nolan L. Cabrera, Monica H. Lin, Lucy Arellano, Lorelle L. Espinosa

Nolan L. Cabrera

Targeting four institutions with structured science research programs for undergraduates, this study focuses on how underrepresented students experience science. Several key themes emerged from focus group discussions: learning to become research scientists, experiences with the culture of science, and views on racial and social stigma. Participants spoke of essential factors for becoming a scientist, but their experiences also raised complex issues about the role of race and social stigma in scientific training. Students experienced the collaborative and empowering culture of science, exhibited strong science identities and high self-efficacy, while developing directed career goals as a result of ‘‘doing science’’ in ...

Migración De Personal Altamente Calificado De México A Estados Unidos: Una Exploración Del Fenómeno, Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez

Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez

This essay proposes to explore the features of the migration phenomenon of highlyqualified personnel from Mexico to the United States. To this end it analyzes, principally, two sources of information: first, data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s ongoing survey of households, the American Community Survey. This data identifies the features of the sociodemographic and educational profile of Mexicans residing in the United States of America, and compares it with the data for the native population and for the subset of foreign, non-Mexican residents in that country. Work with survey microdata makes it possible to provide accurate figures for ...

The Intersection Of Judicial Attitudes And Litigant Selection Theories: Explaining U.S. Supreme Court Decision Making, Jeff L. Yates, Elizabeth Coggins Jan 2009

The Intersection Of Judicial Attitudes And Litigant Selection Theories: Explaining U.S. Supreme Court Decision Making, Jeff L. Yates, Elizabeth Coggins

Jeff L Yates

Two prominent theories of legal decision making provide seemingly contradictory explanations for judicial outcomes. In political science, the Attitudinal Model suggests that judicial outcomes are driven by judges' sincere policy preferences -- judges bring their ideological inclinations to the decision making process and their case outcome choices largely reflect these policy preferences. In contrast, in the law and economics literature, Priest and Klein's well-known Selection Hypothesis posits that court outcomes are largely driven by the litigants' strategic choices in the selection of cases for formal dispute or adjudication -- forward thinking litigants settle cases where potential judicial outcomes are readily discernable ...
