Empty Ritual: Young-Adult Stepchildren's Perceptions Of The Remarriage Ceremony, Leslie Baxter, Dawn Braithwaite, Jody Kellas

Dawn O. Braithwaite

This qualitative study investigated 80 young-adult stepchildren’s talk about one of their parents’ remarriage ceremony. The remarriage event was celebrated in six types of ritual enactments, five of which celebrated the couple’s marriage and one of which was family-centered in its celebration of the beginning of the new stepfamily. Three factors led stepchildren to find the remarriage ceremony empty: (i) a ritual form that was too traditional or not traditional enough; (ii) a ritual enactment that failed to pay homage to either the stepchild’s family of origin or the stepfamily as a unit; and (iii) a ritual ...

A Boyfriend To Die For: Edward Cullen As Compensated Psychopath In Stephanie Meyer’S Twilight, Debra Merskin Dec 2009

A Boyfriend To Die For: Edward Cullen As Compensated Psychopath In Stephanie Meyer’S Twilight, Debra Merskin

Debra Merskin

This article is an analysis of the teen-targeted vampire novel Twilight. The series and related merchandise have been a runaway financial success. Illustrative quotes from Twilight are presented according to Guggenbühl-Craig’s concept of the “compensated psychopath” (CP)—an individual who approaches the psychological extreme of psychopathy but is able to pass for functional in society. The author argues the lead male character Edward Cullen is a CP and that the representation is problematic. The book’s main female character, Bella Swan, becomes completely dependent on Edward, desires him in part because he seems unattainable, and is willing to die ...

A December To Remember, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2009

A December To Remember, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It has been a December to remember.

As the month comes to a close with a remarkable flurry of headline sports stories, its clear that this one month was not only one for the memory bank, but that it may have been the most fitting way to end a year that has certified the decade as the Naughty Naughties. What seemed like an awkward tag at the beginning of the new century has become a most appropriate signature phrase as this decade comes to its ignominious close.

Suspect Until Proven Guilty, A Problematization Of State Dossier Systems Via Two Case Studies: The United States And China, Kenneth N. Farrall Dec 2009

Suspect Until Proven Guilty, A Problematization Of State Dossier Systems Via Two Case Studies: The United States And China, Kenneth N. Farrall

Publicly Accessible Penn Dissertations

This dissertation problematizes the "state dossier system" (SDS): the production and accumulation of personal information on citizen subjects exceeding the reasonable bounds of risk management. SDS - comprising interconnecting subsystems of records and identification - damage individual autonomy and self-determination, impacting not only human rights, but also the viability of the social system. The research, a hybrid of case-study and cross-national comparison, was guided in part by a theoretical model of four primary SDS driving forces: technology, political economy, law and public sentiment. Data sources included government documents, academic texts, investigative journalism, NGO reports and industry white papers. The primary analytical instrument ...

A Comparative Content Analysis Of Televised Political Advertising In The United States And Canada In 2004 And 2008., Jessica A. Mahone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Analyzing 195 televised political ads from the United States and Canada in 2004 and 2008, this research studies the use of issue and image ads and the attack, acclaim, and contrast function of ads in presidential and federal elections. Results indicate that there is no statistical difference in the use of issue or image ads and no statistical difference in the function of ads in both nations in 2004 and 2008. Issue ads are found to be more commonly used in Canada than in the United States, but there is no statistical difference in the use of acclaim ads between ...

Perceptions Of Interprofessional Communication: Causes And Effects On Patient Care, Occupational Stress, And Job Satisfaction., Stacey Quillen Deshkulkarni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Poor interprofessional communication has been linked to decreased quality of patient care and increased numbers of medical errors. Increased occupational stress due to lack of effective interprofessional communication can lead to poor job satisfaction and burnout. The purpose of this study was to identify barriers to interprofessional communication as perceived by radiologic technologists. In particular, how did demographic data influence these perceptions? The research was conducted during June of 2009. The population for this survey consisted of registered radiologic technologists employed at hospitals in Northeast Tennessee. A survey questionnaire covering the subject of interprofessional communication was distributed to a cluster ...

Transparency And City Government Communications, Jennalande Oswald Dec 2009

Transparency And City Government Communications, Jennalande Oswald

Theses and Dissertations

This study expresses the need for a communications model created specifically for government communications that is centered on the concept of transparency. However, it also recognizes the previous research done pertaining to government communications and public relations. Importantly, the study recognizes the lack of trust in American government at city, state and federal levels and the need to improve trust, which is very closely related to transparency. The study focuses primarily on a model created in 2007 called the three-dimensional model for government communications. The model has four parts: the base of the model is the need to value transparency ...

Salvaging, Surrendering, And Saying Goodbye To My Leg, Laura L. Ellingson Dec 2009

Salvaging, Surrendering, And Saying Goodbye To My Leg, Laura L. Ellingson

Women's and Gender Studies

Nearly 20 years after my diagnosis with osteogenic sarcoma—a virulent, fist-sized tumor in my right femur just above the knee—my surgeon and I made the difficult decision to amputate my leg. After 12 reconstructive surgeries on my leg (and several on my chest and abdomen), 13 months of chemotherapy, three major staph and/or strep infections in my knee, and a promise that yet another surgical reconstruction of my leg would necessitate a lifetime on daily antibiotics and give me a knee that would almost certainly cease to function within a couple years, I was done. I had ...

Revisiting The Personal Influence Model As An Ethical Standard In Public Relations Theory And Practice, Rita Somfai Dec 2009

Revisiting The Personal Influence Model As An Ethical Standard In Public Relations Theory And Practice, Rita Somfai

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis attempts to better understand the importance and application of the personal influence model in relationship building between organizations and public decision makers. The personal influence model was added by Sriramesh and Grunig (1992) as a potential fifth model to Grunig and Hunt's (1984) four models of public relations practice (as cited by Grunig in Heath, 2007); however, this essential relationship building approach has not been examined in the public relations literature as it could have been. Scholarly research since the addition of the personal influence model has mostly occurred in Asia and India. Studies on the topic ...
