Gender Portrayal In Hong Kong And Korean Children's Tv Commercials: A Cross‐Cultural Comparison, Young Sook Moon, Kara Chan Dec 2002

Gender Portrayal In Hong Kong And Korean Children's Tv Commercials: A Cross‐Cultural Comparison, Young Sook Moon, Kara Chan

Department of Communication Studies Journal Articles

This study examined gender portrayal in a sample of 345 television commercials broadcast during children's programmes in Hong Kong and Korea using content analysis. Literature suggests that Hong Kong culture differs from Korean culture on the dimension of Masculinity/Femininity proposed by Hofstede. The differences between the two countries provide a valid test of theory, and suggest hypotheses about the gender portrayal in children's advertising. The results of the study showed, contrary to expectations from Hofstede's framework, that the gender portrayal of central characters and the level of gender stereotyping in Hong Kong commercials was similar to ...

An Evening With Cub Fans In Scotland: The Craigs Of Rockford, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Cub fans are a unique species. Attachment to losing is taken to a level of religious fanaticism by the Cub faithful. Of course the charm of the Cubs is not simply that they lose, but that they are lovable losers. This is what inspires undying devotion in their fans. Indeed if the Cubs were to do the improbable, nay the impossible, and win a World Series I suspect Cub fans would lose the essence of their Cubness.

Roone Arledge: A Tribute, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The death of Roone Arledge this past week marks the passing of one those remarkable figures in recent history who had a major influence on mass culture in America. He changed the viewing habits of Americans, transformed the way in which television covers sport, altered the nature and character of American sport, and transformed the way in which television presents reality to the American public. For all of these reasons Roone Arledge cast a large shadow over America in the second half of the twentieth century.

On Sport and Society

Could there be an issue more emblematic of the Bush Era in domestic affairs than the smoldering muck pile being stoked at the legendary Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Master’s and seat of hypocrisy in the “New” South? Maybe there is, but until it comes across my laptop this will do.

On Computing Condensed Frequent Pattern Bases, Jian Pei, Guozhu Dong, Wei Zou, Jiawei Han Dec 2002

On Computing Condensed Frequent Pattern Bases, Jian Pei, Guozhu Dong, Wei Zou, Jiawei Han

Kno.e.sis Publications

Frequent pattern mining has been studied extensively. However, the effectiveness and efficiency of this mining is often limited, since the number of frequent patterns generated is often too large. In many applications it is sufficient to generate and examine only frequent patterns with support frequency in close-enough approximation instead of in full precision. Such a compact but close-enough frequent pattern base is called a condensed frequent patterns-base.

In this paper, we propose and examine several alternatives at the design, representation, and implementation of such condensed frequent pattern-bases. A few algorithms for computing such pattern-bases are proposed. Their effectiveness at pattern ...

Web Service Technologies And Their Synergy With Simulation, Senthilanand Chandrasekaran, Gregory S. Silver, John A. Miller, Jorge Cardoso, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The World Wide Web has had a huge influence on the computing field in general as well as simulation in particular (e.g., Web-Based Simulation). A new wave of development based upon XML has started. Two of the most interesting aspects of this development are the Semantic Web and Web Services. This paper examines the synergy between Web service technology and simulation. In one direction, Web service processes can be simulated for the purpose of correcting/improving the design. In the other direction, simulation models/components can be built out of Web services. Work on seamlessly using simulation as a ...

Cultural Studies And Cultural Text Analysis, Urpo Kovala Dec 2002

Cultural Studies And Cultural Text Analysis, Urpo Kovala

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Cultural Studies and Cultural Text Analysis," Urpo Kovala discusses the role of textual analysis in cultural studies. He begins with a sketch of different conceptions of textual analysis within cultural studies by pointing to differences in the concepts of text and context themselves. Next, Kovala explores the reasons for including textual analysis as a category and method in cultural studies and in humanities and social sciences scholarship generally. Finally, Kovala sketches briefly a model for the cultural analysis of text where his main point is that the argument about the incompatibility of cultural studies and textual analysis ...
