Empowerment In The United States Congress, James D. Mark, Christopher J. Poulos Apr 1997

Empowerment In The United States Congress, James D. Mark, Christopher J. Poulos

Honors Theses

The purpose of the forthcoming study is to gain an understanding of how empowerment is utilized in the political arena. The project will primarily deal with Congress and the relations between Members. With all of the facets of the legislative branch, it is necessary to narrow this study to several aspects of the body. Due to the diversity of Congressional Members and the formal structure of House and Senate committees, this investigation will serve to provide a concentrated, yet thorough analysis of the presence of empowerment.

American Indian Interests And Supreme Court Agenda Setting: 1969-1992 October Terms, John R. Hermann Apr 1997

American Indian Interests And Supreme Court Agenda Setting: 1969-1992 October Terms, John R. Hermann

Political Science Faculty Research

A recent development in the judicial behavior literature on Supreme Court agenda setting is the examination of case selection within particular areas of the law. To that end, this study examines the Supreme Court's agenda-building process regarding American Indian Interests as a petitioning litigant during the 1969-1992 October terms. Using a multivariate logistic regression model, the findings indicate that judicial attitudes as manifested by the attitudinal model, the direct and third party briefs filed by the Solicitor General's office for and against American Indian interests, and the presence of a sovereignty issue were influential explanatory variables in the ...

Immigration Act Of 1990: Friend Or Foe To Business?, Charla Moltzan

Political Science and International Relations Undergraduate Theses

One of the purposes of the Immigration Act of 1990 is to ease the barriers for professionals to enter the United States workforce. This paper will evaluate how well this law has met its goal. It is my contention that a close examination of the Immigration Act of 1990 and its impacts will reveal that it has benefited large businesses in the a United States. There are many other important affects of immigration laws. However, this paper will focus on the effects of these laws on businesses, because there is a lack of conclusive writing on the effect of immigration ...

Regional Integration And Transnational Politics: Popular Sector Strategies In The Nafta Era, Maria Lorena Cook Jan 1997

Regional Integration And Transnational Politics: Popular Sector Strategies In The Nafta Era, Maria Lorena Cook

Articles and Chapters

[Excerpt] This chapter argues that although economic integration between the United States and Mexico had been taking place for some time, it was the formal recognition of this process as represented by the discussions surrounding the North American Free Trade Agreement that facilitated transnational political action by non-state actors. Whereas the globalization of the economy and the prevalence of neoliberal economic policies may be considered by some to undermine popular sector organization and actions, formal recognition of regional economic integration in North America has produced a ‘transnational political’ arena that has expanded the resources available to non-governmental groups, increased their ...

Women In A Divided Church: Liberal And Conservative Catholic Women Negotiate Changing Gender Roles, Christel Manning Jan 1997

Women In A Divided Church: Liberal And Conservative Catholic Women Negotiate Changing Gender Roles, Christel Manning

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

The Catholic Church in America is deeply divided, and gender issues (especially reproductive choice and women's ordination) have become a symptom of this division. This paper examines the language used by liberal and conservative Catholic women to talk about gender. It is argued that although similar divisions over gender exist within Protestantism and Judaism, Catholic women are in a unique position to confront them, Unlike conservative Protestants and Jews who have separated themselves from their more liberal counterparts by forming independent Evangelical and Orthodox denominations, conservative Catholics co-exist with liberals in the mine church. The paper shows that being ...

Interpersonal Christian Prayer And Communication, E. James Baesler Jan 1997

Interpersonal Christian Prayer And Communication, E. James Baesler

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

Nationwide statistical polling during the past 40 years have indicated that prayer is a frequent and important activity for a majority of Americans. Yet communication scholars have yet to theoretically consider the relationship between prayer and communication. This investigation compared and contrasted a particular type of prayer, Interpersonal Christ¦·n Prayer (ICP), with a particular type of communication context, Interpersonal Communication (IC). Results suggested that ICP and IC share common ground in their dyadic nature, intentionality, and in specific communication processes, and that they differ in the nature of the relational being one is communicating with, the locus of initial ...
