A Descriptive Follow-Up Study Of 21 Children From Parry Center, Paul Duke, William Handorf, Robert Lauer, Wayne Lee, Robert Rowe, Robert Stensberg

Dissertations and Theses

The age-old question persists: Does an agency operated treatment program contribute significantly to a child’s personal development and adjustment following release from the institution? Since it is the agency’s responsibility to weigh the needs of the disturbed child and provide appropriate services according to those needs, their basic question--whether residential treatment or another mode of treatment is more effective--remains unanswered and, in many instances, uncontested. If residential child care benefits the disturbed child, which characteristics of that agency are conducive to the improvement of the child’s behavior and re-adaption? The following study will attempt to isolate such ...

Sickle Cell Anemia : A Psychosocial Study Of Attitudes And Effect, Sharon Ann Goddard, Marian Genita Gilmore Jan 1973

Sickle Cell Anemia : A Psychosocial Study Of Attitudes And Effect, Sharon Ann Goddard, Marian Genita Gilmore

Dissertations and Theses

This research study was focused on two broad areas of exploration. The first area deals with the identification of various factors affecting a family when a family member has the anemia or symptomatic form of sickle cell disease. Data obtained from a personally administered questionnaire (Form A), enabled the researchers to determine if genetic counseling had been offered and received, and if this counseling was considered helpful by the respondents. In addition to this, data was collected on several demographic variables, including sex and age of patient, family income, religion, education, ethnic group, living arrangements and occupation, and response to ...

Color Perception In Golden Mantled Ground Squirrels, Robert F. Cooley Jan 1973

Color Perception In Golden Mantled Ground Squirrels, Robert F. Cooley

Dissertations and Theses

Squirrels appear to be unique among sub-primate mammals in being able to see at least some colors. A readily available Oregon squirrel species, golden mantled ground squirrels (Citellus lateralis), which has not previously been tested under laboratory conditions for color vision, was subjected to color discrimination testing in a Skinner box. On the basis of recent physiological tests of color reception capacity and behavioral tests of color discrimination response in closely related species, it was predicted that this species should be able to discriminate blue, green and possibly yellow, but not red. Three experiments were conducted. The first, a pilot ...

Predicting And Detecting First Grade School Adjustment, Julie D. Holmes, Janice L. Bartlett Jan 1973

Predicting And Detecting First Grade School Adjustment, Julie D. Holmes, Janice L. Bartlett

Dissertations and Theses

School maladjustment incidence studies estimate that thirty percent of American school children experience school adaptation problems and that about ten percent need immediate clinical attention. (Glidewell, 1969) Various labels, including school maladjustment, school maladaptation, school dysfunction, soclo-emotional disorders and emotional disturbance have been used more or less interchangeably in current research to refer to this thirty percent of the school population. A leading researcher in the field, Emory L. Cowen, considers children to be "maladapted when they are unable, because of prior history and personal qualities or skill deficiencies, to cope with the educational or behavioral demands that the school ...

Community Vocational Success Of Institutionalized Mental Retardates As A Function Of Coping Style, Jane C. Schilling Jan 1973

Community Vocational Success Of Institutionalized Mental Retardates As A Function Of Coping Style, Jane C. Schilling

Dissertations and Theses

In May, 1968, Fairview Hospital and Training Center (for the Mentally Retarded) located in Salem, Oregon, initiated its first Manpower Development and Training Program (MDT) coupled with an On-The-Job Training Program (OJT). The OJT portion of the training phase was eventually renamed and is now known as the Jobs Optional Program (JOP). Since the start of the program, a total of 273 residents have participated in the institutional phase and 131 in the JOP phase.

The purpose of this study was to develop a scale that would predict a trainee’s (or potential trainee’s) success or failure in the ...

A Study Of The Relationship Between Religious Belief Patterns And Measures Of Social Activism, Janet Baumbert Jan 1973

A Study Of The Relationship Between Religious Belief Patterns And Measures Of Social Activism, Janet Baumbert

Student Work

The radical changes in American theology, in religious attitudes and mode of religious expression, and in the nature of the relationship between religious commitment and particular social issues have shaped the present decade in such a way that the thrust of religious belief is being seriously questioned. Among sociologists involved in the study of religion this is a pervading topic (Berger, 1970; Bouma, 1970; Demarath, 1969; Glock, et al. 1967; Hadden, 1969; Stark & Glock, 1970; Tinger, 1969).

On Efficient Provision Of Social Overhead Goods, Ted Bergstrom Dec 1972

On Efficient Provision Of Social Overhead Goods, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

This paper was my attempt to build a theory of "public factors of production" such as scientific knowledge and to see whether there is any way that Arrow-Debreu general equilibrium theory can cope with the nonconvexities that arise. I propose that the economy might be partitioned into provision of "social overhead goods" and ordinary goods in such a way that given the quantities of social overhead goods, the remaining activities satisfy the assumptions needed for the existence of competitive equilibrium. I proposed and examined a notion of "Lindahl-Hotelling equilibrium" in which individuals were assigned Lindahl prices for the social overhead ...

The Role Of Religion In Goverment And Politics In Laos, Joel Halpern Dec 1972

The Role Of Religion In Goverment And Politics In Laos, Joel Halpern

Joel M. Halpern

Buddhism is one of the more important components of Lao culture but it is easy to misunderstand. The position of Buddhism and the role of religious beliefs are subtle and diffuse. Basic to the understanding of Buddhism in politics and government is the knowledge of its structure and function.
