Competitive Equilibrium Without Transitivity, Monotonicity, Or Free Disposal, Ted Bergstrom Dec 1973

Competitive Equilibrium Without Transitivity, Monotonicity, Or Free Disposal, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

This paper shows how to relax several of the standard assumptions used to prove the existence of competitive equilibrium. I thought it was more interesting than the referees did. Some of the ideas in this paper appear in my other papers on general equilibrium.

The Social Organization Of Burglary, Neal Shover Mar 1973

The Social Organization Of Burglary, Neal Shover

Neal Shover

The social organization of systematic burglary is discussed and briefly compared to earlier work on systematic offenders. Salient aspects of both the internal and external social organization of burglary are presented, especially as these are related to the problems of burglary. It is suggested that burglary continues to be more like the social organization of professional theft, as this was presented by Sutherland, than check forgery and armed robbery, as these have been depicted in recent literature. Some possible reasons for this are presented. Finally, it is suggested that the social organization of burglary can be expected to continue to ...

Stability Of Nonverbal Immediacy Behaviors, Miles Patterson Feb 1973

Stability Of Nonverbal Immediacy Behaviors, Miles Patterson

Miles Patterson

The stability of the immediacy behaviors of approach distance, eye contact, approach orientation, and body lean was examined across two interviews over a 25 min and a 1-week interval. Stability coefficients were similarly high between the sessions for each interval. General support was found for the presence of compensatory relationships between approach distance and eye contact and between approach distance and approach orientation. A bimodal distribution of approach distances, found in both studies, included a substantial intermediate range which was not used by any of the subjects. Evidence from personality data and self-ratings suggested that subjects who remained more distant ...

On Efficient Provision Of Social Overhead Goods, Ted Bergstrom Dec 1972

On Efficient Provision Of Social Overhead Goods, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

This paper was my attempt to build a theory of "public factors of production" such as scientific knowledge and to see whether there is any way that Arrow-Debreu general equilibrium theory can cope with the nonconvexities that arise. I propose that the economy might be partitioned into provision of "social overhead goods" and ordinary goods in such a way that given the quantities of social overhead goods, the remaining activities satisfy the assumptions needed for the existence of competitive equilibrium. I proposed and examined a notion of "Lindahl-Hotelling equilibrium" in which individuals were assigned Lindahl prices for the social overhead ...

The Role Of Religion In Goverment And Politics In Laos, Joel Halpern Dec 1972

The Role Of Religion In Goverment And Politics In Laos, Joel Halpern

Joel M. Halpern

Buddhism is one of the more important components of Lao culture but it is easy to misunderstand. The position of Buddhism and the role of religious beliefs are subtle and diffuse. Basic to the understanding of Buddhism in politics and government is the knowledge of its structure and function.

"Congress: The Electoral Connection" - Original Draft, David R. Mayhew Dec 1972

"Congress: The Electoral Connection" - Original Draft, David R. Mayhew

David Mayhew

Back in the 1970s, how did we go about our writing? Here is an instance. In the summer of 1973, I wrote the original draft of Congress: The Electoral Connection in longhand on (mostly) yellow lined 8x14 legal-sized pads using a number two pencil. That was the way to go. No computers back then. I didn't use an electric typewriter or even a manual one. As for devising a figure (on page 64) and a table (page 92), I drew them by hand. Once I got it all done, I whipped it off to a professional typist. I kept ...
