What Is Critical Literacy?, Ira Shor Jan 1999

What Is Critical Literacy?, Ira Shor

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

We are what we say and do. The way we speak and are spoken to help shape us into the people we become. Through words and other actions, we build ourselves in a world that is building us. That world addresses us to produce the different identities we carry forward in life: men are addressed differently than are women, people of color differently than whites, elite students differently than those from working families. Yet, though language is fateful in teaching us what kind of people to become and what kind of society to make, discourse is not destiny. We can ...

The Grand Bazaar: Trust, Multicultural Education, And The Education Of Teachers, Wade A. Carpenter Jan 1998

The Grand Bazaar: Trust, Multicultural Education, And The Education Of Teachers, Wade A. Carpenter

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

Trust is necessary for education. But distrust is a major problem in urban, multiethnic schools. The existing literature on multicultural education, while strong on political, sociological, and economic concerns, devotes little if any attention to the character of the teacher. Teachers whose preparation has not connected ethics and ethnicity may consider resistance theory as simply shrill, and disregard it entirely. The article goes on to suggest that teachers get a highly personalized, balanced liberal and technical preparation from professors intimately familiar with urban k-12 instruction.

Stories From The Other Side Of The Screen: Identifying Social Construction Within Educational Software, Brenda Matthis Jan 1998

Stories From The Other Side Of The Screen: Identifying Social Construction Within Educational Software, Brenda Matthis

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

Designers of software programs provide their narratives, perspectives, and points of view through the software programs they develop, consciously and explicitly or not. As the providers of these narratives, the software designers are considered the authors of this medium. These authors' narratives contribute to the social construction of the users of the software as they gain cognitive instruction and entertainment. This is especially important to consider when it comes to educational software used by children in the classroom and in the home. The traditional process for the examination of narrative and content in a medium is a review. Narratives in ...

What Students Think Is Funny: Gender And Class Issues In The Humor Of Woody Allen, Grace Paley, Marietta Holley And James Thurber, Judith Beth Cohen

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

To introduce students to the gender, culture and class dimensions of their reception of texts, I presented four short selections of literary humor. These forty two adult students, thirty women and twelve men, were beginning an intensive residency program to complete their bachelor's degrees at Lesley College in Cambridge, Mass. Ranging in age from their late twenties to late forties, many were human service workers, self-supporting divorced women and some were themselves recovering substance abusers. None were English or literature majors. Since I didn't want name recognition to influence their choices, I read the pieces aloud and gave ...

A New Paradigm Of Learning For Urban Adult Learners: Challenges For Educators And Policymakers Regarding Education And Community Service, Carroy Ugene Ferguson Jan 1997

A New Paradigm Of Learning For Urban Adult Learners: Challenges For Educators And Policymakers Regarding Education And Community Service, Carroy Ugene Ferguson

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

Ferguson and Kamara (1993) in Innovative Approaches to Education and Community Service argue that during the coming decades, educators and policymakers will be presented with many challenges that will require nothing less than the creation and implementation of a new paradigm of learning. Innovative approaches to education and community services outlined in that book focus on the urban adult learner and are reflective of aspects of the type of new paradigm of learning that policymakers, both within and beyond the academy must concern themselves with now and in the future. At issue is a commitment on the part of state ...
