The At-Risk Student Population You Might Be Overlooking: Working With Developmental Education Students, Lauren Colburn, Beth Fuchs

Library Presentations

Each year a considerable number of students are placed in developmental education courses which are intended to prepare them for college-level courses. In fact, a 2016 report published by the National Center for Education Statistics showed that 68% of students at public 2-year institutions and 40% of students at 4-year public institutions enrolled in at least one math, reading, or writing, developmental course between 2003-2009 (NCES, 2016). Nationally, many states have begun to focus specifically on these courses and the various ways institutions can surround these students with the academic support structures they need to succeed. However, one support structure ...

Providing Access To And Discovery Of Oral Histories At The University Of Kentucky, Marsha Seamans, Kathryn Lybarger

Library Presentations

The Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky is recognized around the world as a leader and innovator in the collection and preservation of oral histories. The more than 9,000 interviews in our collection provide a unique look into Kentucky and American history.

While the Center for Oral History has developed an excellent stand-alone catalog of the collections, projects and interviews in the collection utilizing Drupal and DACS, we wanted to provide discovery through our online catalog, our discovery system (InfoKat Discovery) and WorldCat.

This project had a number of decision points:

  • Since discovery ...

Thanks to positive feedback and faculty recommendations, the library’s involvement ...

The Future Of Law Libraries, Tina M. Brooks, Franklin L. Runge, Beau Steenken

Law Faculty Popular Media

Law libraries are filed with the rules that govern our society, thoughtful scholars, conscientious lawyers, some hard working students, and some procrastinating students. In the past, this required libraries to collect hardbound volumes and loose leafs. Today, the collection is beginning to give way to research platforms filed with those same, or similar, materials and then some; much of the primary legal documentation is even freely available on the web.

While the physical footprint of the library may be smaller as a result of this transition, the amount of legal information that researchers have access to has grown exponentially. We ...

To support the University of Kentucky’s (UK) strategic plan, UK Libraries created a Director of International Programs (DIP) position in 2010 to plan and manage its international initiatives. In consultation of the UK administration, the DIP identified areas in which the library could make major contributions toward internationalization. The DIP has made significant progress in the areas by participating in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Passport to the World Program. Each year the College celebrates the cultural heritage of a country/region. The DIP and liaison librarians collaborate with faculty from different departments to annotate and showcase relevant ...

Technology has long since removed the need for paper copies of theses and dissertations in the library. The latest strategy for receiving, reviewing, and archiving graduate student scholarship is the institutional repository (IR). An IR will allow online submission by a student from anywhere in the world, increasing convenience for local students and increasing global diversity.

The University of Kentucky Graduate School and the University of Kentucky Libraries have teamed to create an online submission process for all graduate student scholarship. UKnowledge, the University's IR, is now home to all digitally born graduate student scholarship. To make the student ...
