Each year a considerable number of students are placed in developmental education courses which are intended to prepare them for college-level courses. In fact, a 2016 report published by the National Center for Education Statistics showed that 68% of students at public 2-year institutions and 40% of students at 4-year public institutions enrolled in at least one math, reading, or writing, developmental course between 2003-2009 (NCES, 2016). Appraisal Frameworks Used To Deaccession Part Of A University Faculty Personal Papers Collection: The Case Of The Artist's Scrapbooks, Ruth E. Bryan

This presentation reflects on an archival deaccessioning situation where the son of a living donor, a member of the faculty at the University of Kentucky, requested the return of the family scrapbooks included in his father's collection. The presentation comprises the story of the deaccession, a definition of "appraisal" in this American archives context, and then an unpacking of the appraisal decision frameworks operating in this case study.

In the United States, university archives are part of the university organizational structure. The archives can be formed strictly of permanent university records or can also include the personal papers of individuals related to the university, most often faculty, but also administrators and students/alumni. Collaborating To Engage In Focused Collection Development At A Federal Regional Depository, Sandra Mcaninch

The University of Kentucky (UK) is participating as a Center of Excellence (COE) for the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the Smithsonian Institution, and the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) in the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries‘ (ASERL) Collaborative Federal Depository Program (CFDP). This collaborative effort is designed to distribute collection development for all Federal agencies across the entire Southeast.

The presenter will describe how UK has focused its depository collection development efforts on non-COE agencies, and reduced its retrospective collection development for other institutions’ COE agencies.
