Journey Into Scholarly Teaching: Interdisciplinary Faculty Book Group, Mary Allen, Randy Magen

This presentation introduces the principles of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and explores the use of an interdisciplinary book group for supporting social work faculty in their journey toward scholarly teaching. Through SoTL, faculty engage in a process of self-reflection, investigation, and evaluation of teaching and student learning.

Households with one or more residents age 65 and over make up 47% of the Neighborhood Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NNORC) of Albany, New York. This two-square-mile area is served by a NNORC interfaith partnership of several religious, health, educational and other community service organizations providing supportive services, social activities, and enhanced access to health and social services. This survey was designed to identify potential areas of need requiring new or expanded services. Homeless Animal Caretakers: A Descriptive And Comparative Study, C Cronley, Elizabeth Strand, D Patterson, S Gwaltney

Data from a Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) were used to compare homeless people who report caring for animals with homeless people who do not report caring for animals, based on demographic variables and stated reasons for homelessness. Among homeless clients (N = 4,100; M age = 39 yr., SD 13.2), 5.5% reported animal caretaking; demographic differences between caretaking and not caretaking homeless clients and life factors related to homelessness were most often associated with animal caretaking. 41% of participants (n = 1,664) were female, and 59% (n = 2,436) were male.
