Heteronormative Labour: Conflicting Accountability Structures Among Men In Nursing, Marci Cottingham, Austin Johnson, Tiffany Taylor Aug 2016

Heteronormative Labour: Conflicting Accountability Structures Among Men In Nursing, Marci Cottingham, Austin Johnson, Tiffany Taylor

Faculty Publications

Drawing on interview and diary data from 40 men in nursing in the US, the current study advances our theoretical understanding of how heteronormativity and masculinity intersect to shape men's performance of carework. Men in nursing are constrained by their accountability to stereotypes that they are gay and/or hypersexual, challenging their work in the feminized profession of nursing. As heteronormativity is embedded in the institution of health care, men nurses of all sexualities must perform additional labour on the job to reconcile their conflicting accountability to heteronormative stereotypes and occupational standards of care. We conceptualize this additional labour ...

Exactly when and where humans gained control over fire has been an archaeological dispute for years. What is undisputed is how profound of an impact this discovery had on human evolution, influencing everything about how people lived. It provided protection and warmth, allowed for cooking, and likely changed social structures as a whole. Determining when this milestone was reached, and thus how exactly it impacted our past, requires a way to discern if fires were started incidentally, or opportunistically controlled. This can be done by examining the tools that would have been used to make the fires: strike-a-lights, or pieces ...

Smoke Without Fire: Reconstructing The Candelero, Jacob Griffith-Rosenberger, Pat Urban, Edward Schortman Jul 2015

Smoke Without Fire: Reconstructing The Candelero, Jacob Griffith-Rosenberger, Pat Urban, Edward Schortman

Kenyon Summer Science Scholars Program

Candeleros are ceramic artifacts produced in ancient Mesoamerica that contain circular chambers, often with vents. They are found primarily at Teotihuacan and in southeast Mesoamerica at Copan and at sites in northwest Honduras with styles varying widely by region. Due to evidence of burning and sooting in chambers, they are thought to be incense burners. The collection of candeleros studied here comes from the Naco and lower Cacaulapa valleys of northwest Honduras and dates to the Late (600-800 CE) and Terminal Classic (800-1000 CE). These artifacts vary from 4-10cm in diameter or larger with bigger examples having more chambers. Most ...
