We need to combat this issue and we ...

Investigating The Effects Of Student Debt On Career Outcomes: An Empirical Approach, Gideon Moore May 2019

Investigating The Effects Of Student Debt On Career Outcomes: An Empirical Approach, Gideon Moore

Honors Projects

High student debt has been hypothesized to affect career choice, causing students to desire stable, high paying jobs. To test this hypothesis, I rely on plausibly exogenous variation in debt due to a federal policy shift. In the summer of 2007, the Higher Education Reconciliation Act (or HERA) expanded the cap for federally subsidized student loans. I examine how variation in debt affects career choice and eventual salary of students using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 Child and Young Adult Cohort of students who were of college age during the implementation of the policy. I find ...

Views Of Climate Change: How The News Influences Climate Change Denial In Rural America., Anna Scott Apr 2019

Views Of Climate Change: How The News Influences Climate Change Denial In Rural America., Anna Scott

Journalism Undergraduate Honors Theses

Climate scientists believe that humanity has just about twelve years to solve climate change. As the second largest polluter in the world, this leaves the United States in a position of power and global responsibility. However, the United States has seen a rise in climate change denial since the late 1980s, when scientists discovered what the media dubbed an “ozone hole.” Previous research suggests that some abstract messaging on climate change in the media — as well as polarized news choice, objectification of natural phenomena and growing distrust in mainstream news — is in part responsible for growing skepticism about the validity ...
