After-School Martial Arts: A History, Perceptions Of Academic Advantage, And Effects On Academic Performance, Rose Marie Kelley May 2019

After-School Martial Arts: A History, Perceptions Of Academic Advantage, And Effects On Academic Performance, Rose Marie Kelley

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

After-School Martial Arts utilizes mixed methods to further our understanding of (a) how martial arts became an established after-school activity for elementary school children, (b) how parents and participants perceive the value of martial arts, and (c) whether sustained participation in martial arts is associated with academic gains. I begin with a historical case study that examines how parents came to see martial arts as one of the viable after-school activities for their elementary school age children. Next, I employed qualitative observations and in-depth interviewing techniques to learn more about what parents and participants perceived as attractive in marital arts ...

Online Sport Management Education: What Students’ Qualitative Comments Tell Us About Their Perceptions Of Learning, Nicholas G. Schlereth, Kadence A. Otto

The Journal of SPORT

What do students perceive they are learning in the online setting? Using students open-ended comments on the Student Assessment of Instruction (SAI) instrument, researchers employed a case study approach to explore students’ perceptions of instruction in the online and face-to-face settings in an undergraduate sport management course at a regional comprehensive university in the North Carolina state system. Qualitative results indicated that online students highlighted that the types of assignments were interesting and the structure of the course was helpful toward understanding expectations. Face-to-face students highlighted learning, having enjoyed learning, and the knowledge and enthusiasm of the professor. Thematic results ...

Dmt And “The Man Box:” Provoking Change And Encouraging Authentic Living, An Arts-Based Project, Steven Reynolds

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This thesis explores the mind-body experience through an arts-based research approach to examine, and redefine the emotional capacity and usefulness of males through societal determinants that limits and hinders men from living their authentic selves. Through the lens of a metaphoric “Man Box” 112 men participated in a workshop recreating their personal narratives of socialization through, style of dress, coping mechanisms, belief systems and who they should be as men through society's standards. In the “Man Box,” male bonding, and emotional feelings are discouraged, while the objectification of women, material property and physical/emotional strength are encouraged. This research ...

The Olympics And Sustainable Development At The Tokyo Olympic Games, Alena Ulrichova May 2019

Igniting A New Legacy:
The Olympics And Sustainable Development At The Tokyo Olympic Games, Alena Ulrichova

Master's Projects and Capstones

With a decreasing number of cities bidding to host and organize the Olympic Games, we see that various places find the prospect of embarking on this mega-event project less appealing and lucrative then in the past. Moreover, in looking at the history of the Games, we recognize a troubling pattern: money is often spent irresponsibly and does not bring any benefits to citizens even though their tax payments and state lottery contribution are used as main source for funding the Olympics. In order to shift this trend, the movement towards the global call for sustainability—as presented mainly by the ...

Major League Impact: A Comparative Analysis Of Youth Programs Within Major League Baseball Club Charities, Hayley Walker May 2019

Major League Impact: A Comparative Analysis Of Youth Programs Within Major League Baseball Club Charities, Hayley Walker

Master's Projects and Capstones

As one of the most common structured activities for youth, sport provides numerous opportunities for children to learn to lead healthy, active lifestyles. Additionally, the popularity of sport among young people makes it an effective platform for Positive Youth Development (PYD). However, merely participating in sport does not guarantee that youth will develop positive character traits or acquire important life skills. For that reason, nonprofit organizations that offer sport-based youth development programs must have targeted approaches to facilitating opportunities for learning and growth. This study focuses on the methods of youth programming utilized by the charitable affiliates of five professional ...

The Yips: A Phenomenological Investigation Into The Experience Of A Lost Movement, Patrick O'Brien May 2019

The Yips: A Phenomenological Investigation Into The Experience Of A Lost Movement, Patrick O'Brien

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the experience of the yips, a phenomenon in athletics in which individuals lose the ability to perform a basic, habitual movement of their sports. There is a growing body of research which frames the yips as a movement disorder with possible physical or psychological etiologies, or with components of both. This study centers on the experiences of athletes with the yips, seeking to understand the nature and meaning of the relationship between yips-experienced individuals and their yips, as well as what these meanings reveal about the yips in general. A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews ...

Sexual Violence Prevention Programming For Collegiate Athletes: A Behavior Change Approach To Prevention, Amy Kame May 2019

Sexual Violence Prevention Programming For Collegiate Athletes: A Behavior Change Approach To Prevention, Amy Kame

M.A. in Leadership Studies: Capstone Project Papers

Sexual violence is a pressing issue on college campuses. Evaluations of prevention programming on college campuses have shown to increase knowledge about sexual assault and increase the use of resources on campus, but current programming has been unsuccessful in reducing violent behavior. Male student-athletes are found to be incorporated in an extensive amount of sexual assault complaints and specialized prevention programming for this population does not exist. An examination of the literature on effective prevention strategies show that dosage, timing and sociocultural relevance has been found necessary for behavior change. Effective prevention techniques are used in accordance with specific frameworks ...

Attitudes Of Midwestern Ncaa Diii Intercollegiate Athletes Towards The Usage Of Gender Specific Athletic Mascots., Tim Rickabaugh May 2019

Attitudes Of Midwestern Ncaa Diii Intercollegiate Athletes Towards The Usage Of Gender Specific Athletic Mascots., Tim Rickabaugh

The Journal of SPORT

ABSTRACT

Although it has been over 45 years since the passage of U.S. Title IX legislation, many gender equity issues are still being addressed within both the general and sport cultures. Initially (during the 1970’s) many female intercollegiate athletic programs utilized Gender Specific Athletic Mascots (GSAM’s) to focus attention onto the uniqueness of their emerging programs. Since that time there has been a mass exodus of U.S. colleges and universities away from the usage of GSAM’s, usually in response to internal and/or external pressure, or simply to avoid any degree of controversy related to ...

“Get Tough!”: A Case Study On The Development Of The Sport Ethic In Youth Lacrosse, Ross Budziszewski May 2019

“Get Tough!”: A Case Study On The Development Of The Sport Ethic In Youth Lacrosse, Ross Budziszewski

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports

While participation in youth sport is often linked with positive psychosocial and physical outcomes (Holt et al., 2017), this context can also cultivate ideals that lead to the development of unethical beliefs as well as unsafe sport practices (Al-Yaarbi & Kavussanu, 2017). The sport ethic is described as the deviant overconformity by an athlete to fit societal expectations of a sport’s high-performance culture (Hughes & Coakley, 1991). Strong beliefs in the sport ethic can lead to moral disengagement, antisocial behavior, and viewing sport like warfare (Shields, Funk, & Bredemeier, 2015). Although the sport ethic has been examined in competitive adult sport (Coakley ...

A Statistical Analysis Of The Ouachita Baptist University Men's Baseball Team, Evan Nelson May 2019

A Statistical Analysis Of The Ouachita Baptist University Men's Baseball Team, Evan Nelson

Scholars Day

In this paper, I use sabermetrics to analyze the Ouachita Baptist University men’s baseball team. I run correlation and regression analyses on the hitting and fielding and pitching statistics for games the Tiger baseball team have played from the 2003 season through the 2018 season. Using these analyses plus other information on sabermetrics I have studied, I determine which statistical categories lead to success for the Ouachita baseball team. Using these determinations, I create formulas that analyze player production for position players and pitchers on the 2018 Ouachita Baptist University men’s baseball team.

These formulas isolate four important ...

Corporate Social Responsibility And Minor League Baseball: The Pacific Association And Community Engagement, Rachel Blackman May 2019

Corporate Social Responsibility And Minor League Baseball: The Pacific Association And Community Engagement, Rachel Blackman

Honors Theses and Capstone Projects

Attendance at all levels of baseball is the lowest it has been in 15 years (Kessler, 2018). And with decreasing levels of and social capital, communities are losing trust and civic engagement (Putnam, 2000). Sports teams foster higher levels of trust within their communities (Walker & Kent, 2009). Corporate Social Responsibility provides a way to foster this trust through activities led by sports teams in a community. This includes players visiting schools, libraries, or hosting camps and clinics. This makes Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) much more effective with the inclusion of sports teams (Walker & Kent, 2009). Previous studies addressed the different ...

Advanced Statistics In Arkansas Sports Reporting, Andrew Lee Epperson

Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to analyze how Arkansas’ sports journalists are adapting to the recent surge in available advanced statistics that are being used by certain national news organizations. Using in-depth qualitative research that includes in-depth interviews with a number of individuals in the print, broadcast, and athletics side of sports coverage, we discover how journalists and coaches use these next-generation analytics, what they fundamentally mean for the evolution of each respective path, and why so few Arkansas reporters and writers use them at the time of this paper’s defense. We see how budgets and deadlines restrict the use of ...

Gender Stereotyping Of The Managerial Roles Of Ncaa Athletic Directors, Richard A. Fabri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study draws upon content analysis to investigate the construction of intercollegiate athletic director (AD) vacancy advertisements to better understand how such language may play a role in women’s perceived access to these positions. As a mixed method study, this content analysis was initially employed to analyze the terminology used to construct AD job vacancy advertisements. Subsequently, survey data were analyzed to explore any possible relationships among the participants’ gender, managerial sub-roles, the associated gender of the managerial sub-roles, and the perceived barriers the managerial sub-roles present. The women respondents in this study perceived three of the nine managerial ...

Athletic Identity And Conformity To Masculinity Based On Different Types Of Sports, Julie James May 2019

Athletic Identity And Conformity To Masculinity Based On Different Types Of Sports, Julie James

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Researchers have examined hegemonic masculine norms and athletic identity in regard to athletes in order to understand how traits such as aggression, violence, heterosexual self-presentation, exclusivity, etc., are positively reinforced in America’s sporting culture. The expectations for aggressive sport athletes to use their bodies as weapons, play through injuries, and suppress their empathy makes transitioning into their off-field daily lives difficult. Although researchers have examined how and why college football players conform to masculine norms and an athletic identity, little is known about how these constructs do or do not manifest within the athletes of different types of ...

Am I Graceful? The Effects Of Subtle Stereotype Threat On A Performed Soccer Dribbling Task, Tyra Rucker, Ashley Maes, Emma Hoppes, Emma Nylin

Carroll College Student Undergraduate Research Festival

The purpose of our study was to research how various descriptions of a famous athlete could influence sports performance in undergraduates. Specifically, words such as “graceful” compared to “strong” were used to describe famous soccer player, Alex Morgan. The current research evaluated whether females would be more likely to complete a soccer dribbling task if they were given a subtle stereotype prior to the task. Participants were randomly selected to read a summary of famous female athlete, Alex Morgan that described her performance as “graceful” or “strong”. Our research expected to find that women performed with the least amount of ...

Leading By Example: Coaches’ Perspectives Of The Nonverbal Leaders On Sport Teams, Alicia Finnigan Apr 2019

Leading By Example: Coaches’ Perspectives Of The Nonverbal Leaders On Sport Teams, Alicia Finnigan

Senior Honors Theses

Within the last century, scholars in sociology and psychology have begun to research roles in society. In recent decades, industrial/organizational psychology research sparked an interest in informal roles, and now sport psychology is beginning to adopt that investigation of informal roles as they appear on sport teams. Current research is sparse, but some early work has determined several informal roles, and one of these has been individually investigated. The purpose of this study was to contribute to the expansion of knowledge concerning individual informal roles by investigating collegiate coaches’ perspectives of a second role: the nonverbal leader. Analysis revealed ...

Game Day Alters Crime Pattern In The Vicinity Of Sport Venues In Cleveland, Oh, Brian E. Menaker, Devan A. Mcgranahan, Richard D. Sheptak Jr.

Journal of Sport Safety and Security

Sports venues can increase opportunity for crime and public order disturbances when they are in use, but the impact of sport venues on their local communities have largely been overlooked by sport management research. Theories from criminology provide utility for local public safety officers to plan for event-specific patterns in local criminal activity, but most research of the impact of sport venues on crime has either been theoretical or applied broadly at societal or city levels. Here, we consider routine activity theory and crime pattern theory to better understand the increased frequency of crime events within the local neighborhoods of ...

Impact Of Heart Rate Intensity On Shooting Accuracy During Games In Ncaa Division I Women Basketball Players, James Hutson, Courtney Elliott, Casey Pederson Apr 2019

Impact Of Heart Rate Intensity On Shooting Accuracy During Games In Ncaa Division I Women Basketball Players, James Hutson, Courtney Elliott, Casey Pederson

Undergraduate Research Conference

Shooting accuracy in basketball is key to winning games. While there are various factors as to why a team either makes or misses their shots, the intensity of play is likely a contributing factor. A player who has played the majority of the game would likely have a higher, more intense heart rate (HR). Depending on the athlete, this could impact shooting accuracy. Examining the relationship between HR intensity and shooting accuracy has not been looked at in a real game setting before. Therefore, we set out to determine the impact heart rate intensity has on shooting accuracy in a ...
