Brief Description: Graduate student researchers need training in the basic concepts of RDM. Dates appear regularly in research data and metadata but are a problematic data type to normalize due to a variety of potential formats. This suggests an opportunity for data librarians to assist with formatting dates, yet there are frequent examples of data librarians using diverse strategies for this purpose. Instead, data librarians should adopt the international date standard ISO 8601. This standard provides needed consistency in date formatting, allows for inclusion of several types of date-time information, and can sort dates chronologically. Data services librarians are often faced with local needs in all 12 data information literacy competencies (Carlson et al. 2011) but may not have the requisite skills in each area to offer services.

Gaining expertise in an unfamiliar competency, particularly one which has not historically been associated with the library like “data visualization and representation”, can be challenging.

This paper identifies a scaffolding for librarians to gain foundational experience in data visualization and provides a case study on one library’s initial service offering in this area – a “Data Visualization 101” workshop.

These courses have been continually updated to emphasize information literacy skills for the twenty-first century. This chapter describes the methods that have been developed to improve chemical, data and general information literacy at a large, public, primarily undergraduate institution. E-science has created a need for new skill sets for graduate students managing, working with and curating their research data. How can librarians help teach data management skills?

Methods

Librarians at Albert R. Mann Library collaborated with faculty in the Department of Natural Resources to determine educational priorities and deliver a one-credit special topics course in Spring 2013. Several assessment methods were used in order to determine the success of the instruction, including in-class active and collaborative learning exercises, post-class one-minute reflections, and a final survey.

This poster reports on the results of a content analysis project in which transcripts of interviews with professors in seven disciplines. The faculty members were interviewed about the data education needs of their students. The results indicate that generally faculty members feel that graduate students are unprepared to manage data when the enter graduate education. Many faculty are under the impression that students had previously received training on data management topics but were still lacking in skills.
