The Goat Island Rockshelter: New Light From Old Legacies (Part 3), Elizabeth S. Chilton Dec 2010

The Goat Island Rockshelter: New Light From Old Legacies (Part 3), Elizabeth S. Chilton

Elizabeth S. Chilton

Major syntheses of Hudson Valley prehistory have ignored archaeological sites located and tested by Dr. Mary Butler as part of the Hudson Valley Archaeological Survey (1939-1940). Since many of the sites were multicomponent and unstratified, investigators believed they could provide little new information on culture history in the region. A careful evaluation of one of the 45 sites investigated by the Survey, the Goat Island Rockshelter, in Dutchess County, New York, demonstrates the potential contribution to knowledge offered by previously excavated collections. A detailed materials analysis (including a prehistoric ceramic attribute analysis), and the original field notes and drawings, support ...

La Aplicación De Reconstrucciones Digitales Para La Conservación De Patrimonio: Aportes Preliminares Sobre El Caso De Chan Chan, Patricia Chirinos Ogata Oct 2010

La Aplicación De Reconstrucciones Digitales Para La Conservación De Patrimonio: Aportes Preliminares Sobre El Caso De Chan Chan, Patricia Chirinos Ogata

Patricia Chirinos Ogata

Available informatic resources contribute to the archaeological process allowing to have a more detailed register of the evidence and leading to an efficient information management. Digital reconstruction of sites, as developed all over the world, can be helpful to iconographic research, data massification and especially for the preservation of cultural heritage. In this article, a proposal for a virtual reconstruction of Chan Chan in the peruvian North Coast is made. This paper presents a brief summary of the project development, giving the outlines, research phases and the possible contributions and perspectives.

Spiritually Integrative Archetypal Energies And Glimpes Into Soul Consciousness, Carroy U. Ferguson Oct 2010

Spiritually Integrative Archetypal Energies And Glimpes Into Soul Consciousness, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

In other writings I have described Archetypal Energies as Higher Vibrational Energies that have their own transcendent value, purpose, quality, and “voice” unique to the individual that operate deep within our psyches, at both individual and collective levels. We tend to experience them as “creative urges” to move us toward our Highest Good or Optimal Realities. I use easily recognized terms to evoke a common sense of these Archetypal Energies (e.g., Love, Acceptance, Inclusion, Harmony, Peace). Here, I want to discuss Spiritually Integrative Archetypal Energies and how they can assist us in gaining glimpses into the nature of our ...

Defining Ethics In Domestic And Global Adoption Practice, Mirah Riben Oct 2010

Defining Ethics In Domestic And Global Adoption Practice, Mirah Riben

Mirah Riben

Adoption practitioners and agencies all speak about ethics. However, without definition, the term is as subjective meaningless as "nice." This presentation points out the lack of definition or agreement of what constitutes ethical adoption practice and offers some concrete guidelines to be initiated to protect all parties.

The Power Of Choice: Reflections On Economic Ability, Status, And Ethnicity Of A Free Black Family In Northwestern New Jersey, Megan E. Springate, Amy K. Raes Sep 2010

The Power Of Choice: Reflections On Economic Ability, Status, And Ethnicity Of A Free Black Family In Northwestern New Jersey, Megan E. Springate, Amy K. Raes

Megan E. Springate

Foodways reflect, among other things, ethnicity, status, and consumer choice. Results of excavations conducted within a free black household in an historically white town in northwestern New Jersey explore these issues. Four generations of the Mann family owned and occupied a small house in Sussex Borough from 1862-1909. Analysis of the archaeological resources indicates a dramatic shift in the family’s social status in the late nineteenth century. Faunal remains, tablewares, and vessels associated with food preparation are compared with other contemporary free black house sites in the Mid-Atlantic. This assemblage is found to vary from models generally proposed for ...

Risk Sensitivity And Terrorism, Lawrence Kuznar, James Lutz Sep 2010

Risk Sensitivity And Terrorism, Lawrence Kuznar, James Lutz

James M Lutz

One enduring question about terrorism is why individuals choose to join terrorist groups. Past studies have shown that terrorists are not always poor, and they can in fact come from more privileged groups in society. Risk sensitivity and prospect theory are approaches that can help explain some of the anomalies. They suggest that two types of group are likely to supply members for terrorist organizations in disproportionate numbers. One group consists of those who face a loss of status or position due to ongoing changes in society. A second group consists of those who have an opportunity to gain a ...

It Gets Better If You Do? Measuring Quality Care In Puerto Rico, Jessica Mulligan Jun 2010

It Gets Better If You Do? Measuring Quality Care In Puerto Rico, Jessica Mulligan

Jessica Mulligan

Quantifying quality is supposed to unite health policy, health plans, and health care consumers in a circuit of constant improvement. In practice, significant gulfs separate how policymakers, health plan administrators, and consumers write and talk about quality. Drawing on policy literature, ethnography inside a managed care organization, and interviews with health plan members, this article examines a quality improvement program at a health plan in Puerto Rico. The findings challenge the assumption underwriting neoliberal health policy that quality measurement leads to quality improvement.

The Climatic Niche Diversity Of Malagasy Primates: A Phylogenetic Perspective, Jason Kamilar, Kathleen Muldoon Jun 2010

The Climatic Niche Diversity Of Malagasy Primates: A Phylogenetic Perspective, Jason Kamilar, Kathleen Muldoon

scholarworks@library.umass.edu

Background:
Numerous researchers have posited that there should be a strong negative relationship between the
evolutionary distance among species and their ecological similarity. Alternative evidence suggests that members of adaptive radiations should display no relationship between divergence time and ecological similarity because rapid evolution results in near-simultaneous speciation early in the clade’s history. In this paper, we performed the first
investigation of ecological diversity in a phylogenetic context using a mammalian adaptive radiation, the Malagasy
primates.
Methodology/Principal Findings:
We collected data for 43 extant species including: 1) 1064 species by locality samples, 2) GIS climate data for each ...

The Social Implications Of Emerging Technologies, Katina Michael

Professor Katina Michael

As the Program Committee Chair, I would like to first and foremost thank the forty person strong international program committee for their support, feedback and contributions from the outset. The Committee itself was made up of researchers from 11 countries, covering diverse disciplines and expertise. In their own right members of the program committee are renowned researchers, cited in many of the papers appearing in this year’s ISTAS full proceedings, and over the years appearing in associated publications such as IEEE Technology and Society Magazine. It was such an honour to work with persons possessing a truly collaborative spirit ...
