A Regression Analysis Of Australopithecine Dentition, Gail Celmer Ranyard Dec 1979

A Regression Analysis Of Australopithecine Dentition, Gail Celmer Ranyard

Masters Theses

The permanent dentition of all known Australopithecines (except those from Hadar) are examined for size trends related to temporal and geographic variation. The Australopithecine sample is divided into four major groups for analysis: gracile Australopithecines, robust Australopithecines, ''Homo", and unknown. Mesiodistal and buccolingual dimensions for each tooth are then subjected to regression analysis. To discern temporal variation in tooth size for any of the taxonomic groups, a regression of tooth size with the median date of the specimen is performed. In order to elucidate dental variation related to geographic location, a regression analysis of tooth size with the latitude and ...

Introduction To Suburban Villagers, A Case Study Of The Village Of Moste Near Ljubljana, Slavko Kremensek

Joel M. Halpern

This study, based on vital, census and archival records provides valuable documentation on the nature of peasant life in a part of Europe, Slovenia, that was relatively early exposed to industrialization, albeit in an Austro-Hungarian imperial and colonial setting . Suburban Villages A Case Study Of The Village Of Moste Near Ljubljana, Slavko Kremensek

Joel M. Halpern

This study based on vital census and archival records provides valuable documentation on peasant life in a part of Europe, Slovenia, that was relatively early exposed to industrialization, albeit in the Austrian-Hungarian imperial and colonial setting. The data presented here enable us to understand something of the complexities and the long term nature of the modernization process. When industrialization came to stay in the latter part of the 19th century, the author documents the complex economic and social structure of this particular village community and the significant amount of social-economic mobility which occurred.

Illegal, Secret Dogfights And Cockfights Rampant In The U.S. Jul 1979

Illegal, Secret Dogfights And Cockfights Rampant In The U.S.

Close Up Reports

Early in July, a team of more than 30 local, state, and federal law enforcement officers led by HSUS investigators made a raid on a secret cockfight arena on the outskirts of town. More than 100 people were caught inside the building. All were violating Wyoming state law and possibly federal law.

Unlike cockfighting, dogfighting is expressly prohibited in all 50 states. It, too, is a violation of the animal fighting ventures section of the Animal Welfare Act. HSUS investigators are continually following up leads and providing information on illegal dogfights to local animal welfare groups and law enforcement agencies.

A Comparative Study Of Academic Achievement Of Students From Phased-Elective Social Studies Curriculum With Students From A Traditional Social Studies Curriculum, Dennis Minnix Jul 1979

A Comparative Study Of Academic Achievement Of Students From Phased-Elective Social Studies Curriculum With Students From A Traditional Social Studies Curriculum, Dennis Minnix

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this study, the academic achievement of two groups of University students was compared. The control group consisted of 15 students who had attended a traditional high school. The experimental group consisted of 25 students who had attended a high school which utilized a phased-elective curriculum design.

The students were observed at three points in their schooling. First, students were compared at the end of the eighth grade to determine if any significant difference existed prior to their exposure to the two high school programs. Next, students were observed at the end of their high school education by comparing scores ...

The Recruitment Of Spirit-Directed-Healers, Marilyn Mckillop Wells Jun 1979

The Recruitment Of Spirit-Directed-Healers, Marilyn Mckillop Wells

Doctoral Dissertations

The research sought to identify individual and social factors associated with the recruitment of spirit-directed-healers in Sub-Saharan Africa. This type of traditional healer was defined as a person who: 1) elicits and uses spiritual direction and information in the diagnosis and treatment of illness, 2) attributes the ultimate source of his/her healing power to one or more anthropopsychic spirits, and 3) claims to have been called to healing by those spirits. The spirit-directed-healers' decisions, demands, and remedies are legitimized by their source--the directing supernatural entity.

Data gathered through observations and open-ended interviews with four traditional healers who practiced in ...

A Comparative Analysis Of Cranial Variation In Two Recent Human Populations, Patrick J. Key Jun 1979

A Comparative Analysis Of Cranial Variation In Two Recent Human Populations, Patrick J. Key

Masters Theses

This study examines differences in craniometric variation between two recent human populations in light of tooth size. A large-toothed group is represented by Australian Aborigines from the lower Murray River region and a relatively small-toothed group is represented by protohistoric Plains Amerindians from the Larson Site in South Dakota.

The craniometric variation of the two populations is examined by multivariate statistical techniques to determine if their crania are structured along similar lines. Metric differences between the groups are then examined along the structural dimensions common to both groups.

The crania of the two groups were found to be fairly similar ...
