Transitions In Southeast European Studies?, Joel Halpern

Joel M. Halpern

The objective of the conference was summarized in an official announcement still posted on the web (as of this writing):
"Southeast European or Balkan studies have passed turbulent years not only what the political landscape of the region is concerned but also in respect to the requirements of the disciplines dealing with the region. The time has come for a critical reflection: What have we being doing and in which direction(s) we are going?
What can area studies accomplish, where are their limits and what are the position(s) of area studies in a globalising world?
"Papers should delineate ...

Historical Demographic Data Of Southeastern Europe, 1824 – 1975: A Summary Report, Joel Halpern

Joel M. Halpern

This study consists of historical demographic data collected for 27 villages across Southeastern Europe in the countries of Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia, Slovenia, and Montenegro, all of which make up the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The primary data types include census data, tax data, livestock census data, marriage records, death records, and landholding data. The timeframe for the data is from 1824 to 1975. Originally, this data collection was going to include the word "Balkans" in the title, but Dr. Joel Halpern, the primary PI, informed us that the word is politically charged and considered offensive by some ...

Patriarchy In The Balkan Temporal And Cross Cultural Approaches, Joel Halpern, Karl Kaser, Richard A. Wagner Dec 2011

Patriarchy In The Balkan Temporal And Cross Cultural Approaches, Joel Halpern, Karl Kaser, Richard A. Wagner

Joel M. Halpern

The article deals with the history, distribution and ideology of Balkan patriarchy, the Balkan agnatic kinship system, and with the most significant patriarchal family structures. The demographic analyses are based primarily on the Serbian state census of1863 (the first available census listing women) and the Federal Yugoslav census datafor 1948, 1953, and 1961, coupled with archival and field data for the Central Serbian village of Orasac for 1818-1975. Balkan patriarchy has much in common with similarwell-documented systems in Asia and the Middle East. The Balkan situation was differentiated, however, in that this system existed both within and outside formal statestructures ...

American Imperialism In Southeast Asia A Micro-Anthropological Perspective, Joel Halpern Dec 2011

American Imperialism In Southeast Asia A Micro-Anthropological Perspective, Joel Halpern

Joel M. Halpern

This paper.is about a trip I took through the countryside with the Viceroy of Laos. In this way I am able to consider a bit about the way in which Laotian society was constructed and how I fit in as a foreigner. Thus it is in away modestly remarkable that I made the trip at all. Perhaps a small in sight into this matter is that I really did not have much experience in working for a big and highly structured bureaucracy as was the American aid program. This USOM (United States Operations Mission) was, of course, was itself ...

A Brief Survey Of English Language Research On Yugoslav Cultural And Social Anthropology And Ethnology, Joel M. Halpern May 2009

A Brief Survey Of English Language Research On Yugoslav Cultural And Social Anthropology And Ethnology, Joel M. Halpern

Joel M. Halpern

"The focus of this article is an examination of English language sources dealing with Yugoslavia, mainly the works of American anthropologists in the postwar period. Since cultural and social anthropology as known in the United States and Western Europe does not exist as a separate discipline in Yugoslavia, it is necessary to broaden the field of inquiry to include certain aspects of ethnology and sociology insofar as we wish to include the works of Yugoslav scholars investigating aspects of their own country. The intellectual background and work of Yugoslav researchers has been considered in detail in an earlier article (Halpern ...

Travels With Phetsarath, 1959, Joel Halpern Dec 2008

Travels With Phetsarath, 1959, Joel Halpern

Joel M. Halpern

Prince Phetsarath was a rather dynamic individual who traveled widely and took a lead in his country's fight for independence from France. In addition to his political role, Phetsarath was a renowned hunter and was interested also in writing a history of his country. During his lifetime he produced two books (both published in Thai), one on hunting techniques and the other on the Lao methods of reckoning time. We set off up the Mekong in a traditional Lao pirogue (dugout canoe) powered by a modern outboard motor for the start of our travels.

Serbian Village Culture: The Meeting Point Of American Anthropology And Serbian Ethnology, Mirjana Prosic-Dvornic Dec 2007

Serbian Village Culture: The Meeting Point Of American Anthropology And Serbian Ethnology, Mirjana Prosic-Dvornic

Joel M. Halpern

Since the war, the anthropologists who have spent the longest time in Serbia studying its culture by focusing primarily on one village, Orasac in Sumadija, were Joel and
Barbara Halpern (see Interview, this volume). They had, in a way, combined the efforts of all three of their predecessors (Sanders, Lord and Mosley) and kept adding complexity and innovation as time went by: community study, kinship and social structure, social change, personality and culture, historic demography, life histories, expressive behaviour and oral tradition from a socio-linguistic perspective.

Kinds Of Times And Spaces, Old Endings And New Beginnings:Some Possible Analytical Perspectives, Joel Halpern Dec 2007

Kinds Of Times And Spaces, Old Endings And New Beginnings:Some Possible Analytical Perspectives, Joel Halpern

Joel M. Halpern

In this essay my focus is on the analytical approach to my field data that employs interacting temporal perspectives as analytical categories. It also suggests that such an approach may be of broader applicability in other areas that I have researched outside of Southeast Europe. These writings discussed my conceptual approach in a cross-cultural perspective rather than being confined to the area that was once Yugoslavia and its neighboring countries.
