Putting Transitional Justice On Trial: Democracy And Human Rights In Post-Civil War Societies, Brian K. Frederking Sep 2015

Putting Transitional Justice On Trial: Democracy And Human Rights In Post-Civil War Societies, Brian K. Frederking

International Social Science Review

This paper empirically tests the influence of transitional justice mechanisms (TJMs) – particularly truth commissions and war crimes tribunals – on post-civil war societies. The transitional justice literature advocates the effectiveness of such mechanisms in bringing about the reconciliation necessary to facilitate democratization and respect for human rights. However, few cross-national empirical studies exist to evaluate these claims. This article compares current levels of human rights abuses and democratization in post-civil war countries that have used TJMs with post-civil war countries that have not. These results support the advocates of war crimes tribunals: countries that have used tribunals have higher levels of ...

National Black Conventions And The Quest For African American Freedom And Progress, 1847-1867, Shawn C. Comminey Sep 2015

National Black Conventions And The Quest For African American Freedom And Progress, 1847-1867, Shawn C. Comminey

International Social Science Review

Through times of uncertainty, difficulty and hope, national black conventions represented conscientious self-help efforts to eradicate slavery and ameliorate the condition of free blacks. Concern over the status of blacks in the United States and black participation in the abolitionist movement was the impetus behind the national black convention movement. Between 1847 and 1864, at least five national conventions were held, during which free black delegates and leaders openly discussed the plight of African-Americans. Three major issues—the eradication of slavery, establishing a firm base in America while securing civil rights and emigration, in an attempt to acquire freedoms elsewhere ...

Gender Display, Time Availability, And Relative Resources: Applicability To Housework Contributions Of Members Of Same-Sex Couples, Nicole Civettini Sep 2015

Gender Display, Time Availability, And Relative Resources: Applicability To Housework Contributions Of Members Of Same-Sex Couples, Nicole Civettini

International Social Science Review

Utilizing a survey of 244 members of same-sex couples, this study tested whether inequities in the division of housework in same-sex couples can be explained by (1) gender performance, (2) time availability, and/or (3) relative resources. Gender performance was adapted using measures of stereotypical masculinity and femininity, testing whether outmoded notions of gender would be of utility in explaining housework contributions. Stereotypical femininity was positively related to total and “routine” housework, but not to “discretionary” housework, lending partial support to the gender display explanation. Stereotypical masculinity, however, was not significantly related to any housework measure. Proportional work hours were ...
