It is a common practice in the midwestern United States to raise swine in buildings with under-floor slurry storage systems designed to store manure for up to one year. These so-called “deep-pit” systems are a concentrated source for the emissions of ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and odors. As part of a larger six-state research effort (U.S. Department of Agriculture-Initiative for Future Agriculture and Food Systems Project, “Aerial Pollutant Emissions from Confined Animal Buildings”), real-time NH3 and H2S with incremental odor emission data were collected for two annual slurry removal events. For this study, two 1000-head deep-pit swine finishing ...

Comparison Of Measured Total Suspended Particulate Matter Concentrations Using Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance And A Total Suspended Particulate Sampler, Sheryll B. Jerez, Yuanhui Zhang, Joshua W. Mcclure, Larry Jacobson, Albert Heber, Steven Hoff, Jacek A. Koziel, David Beasley Oct 2019

Comparison Of Measured Total Suspended Particulate Matter Concentrations Using Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance And A Total Suspended Particulate Sampler, Sheryll B. Jerez, Yuanhui Zhang, Joshua W. Mcclure, Larry Jacobson, Albert Heber, Steven Hoff, Jacek A. Koziel, David Beasley

Jacek A. Koziel

A comparison of the concentration of the total suspended particulate (TSP) matter measured by the tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) monitor and the isokinetic TSP samplers developed at the University of Illinois was carried out in several types of confinement livestock buildings. In a majority of the measurements done, the dust concentration measured by the TEOM monitor was lower than the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) isokinetic TSP sampler; the TEOM monitor tended to underestimate the total dust concentration by as much as 54%. The difference in measurements can be attributed to the sampling efficiency of the TEOM monitor ...

A review, with. 54 refs., of legal aspects of using chem. substances in the environment and foods.

Dokonano przeglądu literatury naukowej i omówiono akty prawne dotyczące ksenobiotyków, substancji toksycznych, mutagennych i kancerogennych. Podano klasyfikacje tych substancji wg ECHA (UE), IARC (WHO) oraz ATSDR i OSHA (USA). Przytoczono liczne akty prawne (dyrektywy, ustawy, rozporządzenia) dotyczące rejestracji, oceny, udzielania zezwoleń i stosowanych ograniczeń w zakresie chemikaliów (REACH) i utworzenia Europejskiej Agencji Chemikaliów, w sprawie wprowadzania klasyfikacji, oznakowania i pakowania substancji i mieszanin chemicznych (CLP). Omówiono problematykę substancji chemicznych, ich mieszanin oraz czynników lub procesów technologicznych o działaniu rakotwórczym lub mutagennym w środowisku ...

Screening Of Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds For Detection Of Disease In Cattle: Development Of Lab-Scale Method, Devin L. Maurer, Christine K. Ellis, Tyler C. Thacker, Somchai Rice, Jacek A. Koziel, Pauline Nol, Kurt C. Vercauteren Sep 2019

Screening Of Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds For Detection Of Disease In Cattle: Development Of Lab-Scale Method, Devin L. Maurer, Christine K. Ellis, Tyler C. Thacker, Somchai Rice, Jacek A. Koziel, Pauline Nol, Kurt C. Vercauteren

Jacek A. Koziel

The primary hurdle for diagnosis of some diseases is the long incubation required to culture and confirm the presence of bacteria. The concept of using microbial VOCs as “signature markers” could provide a faster and noninvasive diagnosis. Finding biomarkers is challenging due to the specificity required in complex matrices. The objectives of this study were to (1) build/test a lab-scale platform for screening of microbial VOCs and (2) apply it to Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis; the vaccine strain of M. bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guérin; and M. kansasii to demonstrate detection times greater those typically required for culture. SPME-GC-MS was used for ...

Chemical And Sensory Evaluation Of Volatile Aroma Compounds From Selected Cold-Hardy Grapes And Wines, Somchai Rice Sep 2019

Chemical And Sensory Evaluation Of Volatile Aroma Compounds From Selected Cold-Hardy Grapes And Wines, Somchai Rice

Somchai Rice

Hybrid wine grape cultivars such as St. Croix (E.S. 283 x E.S. 193), Brianna

(‘Kay Gray’ x E.S. 2-12-13), Frontenac (‘Landot 4511’ x University of Minnesota 89),

La Crescent (‘St. Pepin’ x E.S. 6-8-25), Frontenac gris (single bud sport cane from

‘Frontenac’), Marquette (MN 1094 x Ravat 262) have been developed to be cold-hardy

and disease-resistant in order to thrive in the cold climates such as the upper Midwest.

Grape growers, area of grape production, wineries, and wine production has been

increasing since the early 2000. The Iowa wine industry generated a $420 million (USD)

economic ...

Spatiotemporal Patterns Of Small For Gestational Age And Low Birth Weight Births And Associations With Land Use And Socioeconomic Status, Charlene Nielsen, Carl Amrhein, Prakesh S Shah, Khalid Aziz, Alvaro R Osornio-Vargas Sep 2019

Spatiotemporal Patterns Of Small For Gestational Age And Low Birth Weight Births And Associations With Land Use And Socioeconomic Status, Charlene Nielsen, Carl Amrhein, Prakesh S Shah, Khalid Aziz, Alvaro R Osornio-Vargas

Carl Amrhein

In addition to small for gestational age (SGA) and low birth weight at term (LBWT), critically ill cases of SGA/LBWT are significant events from outcomes and economic perspectives that require further understanding of risk factors. We aimed to assess the spatiotemporal distribution of locations where there were consistently higher numbers of critically ill SGA/LBWT (hot spots) in comparison with all SGA/LBWT and all births. We focused on Edmonton (2008-2010) and Calgary (2006-2010), Alberta, and used a geographical information system to apply emerging hot spot analysis, as a new approach for understanding SGA, LBWT, and the critically ill ...
