Monoclonal Antibodies Reveal The Structural Basis Of Antibody Diversity, Jean-Luc Teillaud, Catherine Desaymard, Angela Giusti, Barbara Haseltine, Roberta Pollock, Dale Yelton, Donald Zach, Matthew Scharff Dec 1982

Monoclonal Antibodies Reveal The Structural Basis Of Antibody Diversity, Jean-Luc Teillaud, Catherine Desaymard, Angela Giusti, Barbara Haseltine, Roberta Pollock, Dale Yelton, Donald Zach, Matthew Scharff

Roberta Pollock

Hybridoma technology has made it possible to introduce into continuous culture normal antibody-forming cells and to obtain large amounts of the immunoglobulin produced by each of these cells. Examination of the structure of a number of monoclonal antibodies that react with a single antigen has provided new information on the structural basis of the specificity and affinity of antibodies. Comparisons of families of monoclonal antibodies derived from a single germ line gene revealed the importance of somatic mutation in generating antibody diversity. Monoclonal antibodies that react with variable regions of other monoclonals allow the further dissection and modulation of the ...

Voltage-Controlled Oscillators: Inexpensive Alternative To Analog-To-Digital Converters, Brian Partridge, Richard Dawkins, Charles Amlaner

Charles J. Amlaner

Describes a simple software mimic of an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter that is suitable for most laboratory applications requiring A/D. The routine samples output from a voltage-controlled oscillator that can be built for around $6. Results of proving trials show the output to be linear and sampling rates of up to 50/sec are possible.

Design Of A Remotely Controlled 'Locomotory' Platform Useful In Ethological Studies., Charles Amlaner, Robert Korzyniowski, Robert Bender, John Stout Sep 1978

Design Of A Remotely Controlled 'Locomotory' Platform Useful In Ethological Studies., Charles Amlaner, Robert Korzyniowski, Robert Bender, John Stout

Charles J. Amlaner

A platform capable of movement from one point to another under remote control has been designed for use in behavior studies. Electrical and mechanical design criteria for the platform are discussed, and schematics and engineering drawings are included. The primary application was to study communication between Glaucous-winged gulls. Other applications are suggested.

Aggressive Communication By Larus Glaucescens. Part Vi: Interactions Of Territory Residents With A Remotely Controlled, Locomotory Model, Charles Amlaner Dec 1977

Aggressive Communication By Larus Glaucescens. Part Vi: Interactions Of Territory Residents With A Remotely Controlled, Locomotory Model, Charles Amlaner

Charles J. Amlaner

Observations and experiments on aggressive communication by Larus glaucescens gulls were conducted on Colville Island in 1974. The colony contains approximately 1,800 breeding pairs of Ss. Defenders maintaining a territory utilized defense strategies when responding to a locomotory model. Model directional movement, body posture, and orientation were highly correlated with subsequent behavioral response by the defender. Directional model movement caused an immediate position adjustment by the defender in most cases. The sex of defending birds interacting with the model was not distributed randomly. Males interacted more than females. Evidence supports the observation that male defenders are more aggressive than ...

Effects Of Telemetry Transmitter Weight On Breeding Success In Herring Gulls, Charles Amlaner, Richard Sibly, Robin Mccleery Dec 1977

Effects Of Telemetry Transmitter Weight On Breeding Success In Herring Gulls, Charles Amlaner, Richard Sibly, Robin Mccleery

Charles J. Amlaner

Dummy ratio-tracking transmitters weighing 10, 30 and 50 g were attached to randomly chosen pairs of breeding herring gulls (Larus argentatus). Breeding success was measured as a function of eggs hatched and chicks fledged. Fewer clutches survived if patients were subjected to more severe treatments (p less than 0.02). Component effects (catching pairs of gulls or increased transmitter weight) were not singularly significant in decreasing clutch success.

Dispersal Of Seagulls In An Airdrome Environment, John Stout, William Gillett, James Hayward, Charles Amlaner May 1975

Dispersal Of Seagulls In An Airdrome Environment, John Stout, William Gillett, James Hayward, Charles Amlaner

Charles J. Amlaner

Glaucous-winged Gulls (Larus Glaucescens) provide an acute bird/ aircraft hazard at Shemya Air Force Base, Shemya Island, Alaska. The problem was evaluated by making survey counts of aggregations of gulls on the island. At Ellington Air Force Base, TX, Ring-billed Gulls (Larus delawarensis) often aggregate in large groups on or near the active runways and are hazardous to aircraft. Recorded gull calls played to aggregations of Glaucous-winged Gulls at Shemya AFB showed that the Distress call resulted in fewer birds remaining following playback than any other call. Distress calls played back to aggregations of Ring-billed Gulls near Ellington AFB were ...
