Comparison Of Water Quality, Zooplankton Density, And Cover In Razorback Sucker (Xyrauchen Texanus [Abbott]) Spawning Areas Of Lake Mead And Lake Mohave, Michael E. Golden, Paul B. Holden, Southern Nevada Water Authority

Publications (WR)

Las Vegas Bay and Echo Bay in Lake Mead have small, self-sustaining populations of razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus [Abbot]). Increased productivity and cover have been hypothesized as reasons for successful recruitment of razorback sucker in Lake Mead. Conversely, reproduction has been documented on Lake Mohave, another lower Colorado River reservoir, but no recruitment has been observed. In 2000, BIO-WEST, Inc. was contracted by the Southern Nevada Water Authority to design and implement a study to examine nutrient levels, zooplankton density, and cover in areas with and without razorback sucker recruitment success. We sampled Echo Bay, Las Vegas Bay, and Trail ...

Proteins with reactive sulfhydryls are central to many important metabolic reactions and also contribute to a variety of signal transduction systems. In this re- port, we examine the mechanisms of oxidative dam- age to the two reactive sulfhydryls of carbonic anhy- drase III. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), peroxy radicals, or hypochlorous acid (HOCl) produced irreversibly oxidized forms, primarily cysteine sulfinic acid or cys- teic acid, of carbonic anhydrase III if glutathione (GSH) was not present. When GSH was approximate- ly equimolar to protein thiols, irreversible oxidation was prevented. H2O2 and peroxyl radicals both gener- ated S-glutathiolated carbonic anhydrase III via par- ...

Morphological Plasticity In The Tropical Sponge Anthosigmella Varians: Responses To Predators And Wave Energy., Malcolm Hill, April L. Hill Feb 2002

Morphological Plasticity In The Tropical Sponge Anthosigmella Varians: Responses To Predators And Wave Energy., Malcolm Hill, April L. Hill

Biology Faculty Publications

The goal of the research presented here was to examine phenotypic plasticity exhibited by three morphotypes of the common Caribbean sponge Anthosigmella varians (Duchassaing & Michelotti). We were interested in examining the biotic (and, to a lesser extent, abiotic) factors responsible for branch production in this species. We also tested the hypothesis that the skeleton may serve an antipredator function in this sponge, focusing on vertebrate fish predators (i.e., angelfish) in this work. In transplant and caging experiments, unprotected forma varians replicates were immediately consumed by angelfish, while caged replicates persisted on the reef for several months. These findings support ...

A Candidate Gene Analysis For Response To Salmonella Enteritidis Challenge Or Vaccination In Young Chicks , Wei Liu Jan 2002

A Candidate Gene Analysis For Response To Salmonella Enteritidis Challenge Or Vaccination In Young Chicks , Wei Liu

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Salmonella enteritidis (SE) contamination of poultry products is a major cause of food-borne disease worldwide. The candidate gene approach for identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL) for chicken response to Salmonella enteritidis (SE) was applied in the current study. The Iowa Salmonella Response Resource Population (ISRRP), formed by crossing outbred broiler sires with three diverse, highly inbred dam lines (two major histocompatibility complex-congenic Leghorn lines G-B1 and G-B2 and one Fayoumi line) was studied. The F1 generation was evaluated as young chicks for either bacterial load in spleen and cecum after pathogenic SE inoculation, or antibody level after SE vaccination ...

Molecular And Morphological Evolution Of The Amphipod Radiation Of Lake Baikal, Kenneth S. Macdonald Iii Jan 2002

Molecular And Morphological Evolution Of The Amphipod Radiation Of Lake Baikal, Kenneth S. Macdonald Iii

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The amphipods of Lake Baikal, Russia, are a taxonomically and morphologically diverse group, and have been cited as a classic example of adaptive radiation. An unfortunate consequence of this diversity has been an instability of Baikal amphipod classification, with frequent revisions spurred by differing opinions about the phylogenetic utility of different characters. Classifications have never been based on a rigorous phylogenetic analysis of morphological data and only recently has the phylogeny of Lake Baikal's amphipods been examined using molecular tools. Unfortunately, most of these studies have led to a limited expansion of our understanding of Baikal amphipod systematics. Phylogenetic ...
