Water Quality In A Small Tidal Creek: Parker Creek, Virginia, Carl F. Cerco, Albert Y. Kuo Mar 1981

Water Quality In A Small Tidal Creek: Parker Creek, Virginia, Carl F. Cerco, Albert Y. Kuo

Reports

Parker Creek is a branched tidal creek located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. In its southern branch, the creek receives waste inputs from a poultry processing plant. A study has been conducted to determine the effects of these inputs and to formulate a mathematical model of the creek system suitable for water quality planning. The model and field studies show the creek may be divided into two zones, an upstream zone dominated by freshwater flows and waste inputs, and a downstream zone dominated by conditions in adjacent Metomkin Bay. In the upstream zone of the waste-receiving branch, conditions of ...

A Study Of Dredging Effects In Hampton Roads, Virginia, Walter I. Priest Iii Mar 1981

A Study Of Dredging Effects In Hampton Roads, Virginia, Walter I. Priest Iii

Reports

The intent of this report is to identify and quantify, in part, the adverse effects associated with the dredging operation itself and those segments of the ecological community which might be adversely affected by the levels of suspended solids and sedimentation attributable to the dredge. It consists of three sections including: a comprehensive review of the major marine resources, their location in and utilization of the Hampton Roads Harbor and vicinity; the turbidity model and physical environment, describing the levels and distribution of suspended sediment and sedimentation and local current patterns; and a review of the effects of increased suspended ...

Study To Investigate Source And Transport Route Of Marine Organisms (Hydroids And Bryozoans) In Hampton Roads And Current Velocity Profiles Of The Pier 12 Area, Naval Station, Norfolk, Virginia, Robert J. Diaz, Evon P. Ruzecki Jan 1981

Ruzecki

Reports

Entrainment of the hydroid (Sertularia argentea) and the fleshly bryozoan (Alcyonidium verrilli) in the sea suction of deep draft naval vessels (carriers) in the area of the Norfolk Naval station has been a recurring problem since the early 60's. These fouling organisms (the term fouling is used in this report to indicate clogging of hull bottom intake grates and cooling system condenser tube sheets and not the growth of organisms on any part of the vessel) are winter species, growing only in the fall and winter and not the summer. Unfortunately they are also the most abundant and widely ...

Recreational Boating In Virginia: A Preliminary Analysis, Thomas Murray, Jon A. Lucy Jan 1981

Recreational Boating In Virginia: A Preliminary Analysis, Thomas Murray, Jon A. Lucy

Reports

Increasingly, recreational boating and its supporting industries are being affected by governmental policy and regulatory and allocation decisions. Clearly, those charged with making these decisions cannot understand the impacts of their decisions on related business, individuals, and their livelihoods without possessing some knowledge of the general linkages between boating and local economies. This initial estimate of the economic impacts of boating in Virginia is a first step in that direction. Hopefully, a better knowledge of the nature, recent growth and present magnitude of boating in the Commonwealth will insure that decisions made which influence its existence will be'based on ...
