Soybean varieties that are resistant to the soybean cyst nematode (SCN) are extremely important for managing this damaging pest. In general, SCN-resistant soybean varieties yield greater than susceptible varieties in SCN-infested fields, and resistant varieties keep SCN population densities from increasing, which ensures profitable soybean production in future years.

Soybean varieties that are resistant to the soybean cyst nematode (SCN) are a critical management tool for the pest. In general, SCN-resistant varieties produce greater yields and result in lower SCN numbers at the end of the season than non-resistant (susceptible) varieties.

Soil moisture in many regions of Iowa is at field capacity or more so planting will occur in wet soils this spring. Wet soils increase the risk of damping-off in soybean by the fungi Phytophthora and Pythium. Seedling disease concerns are further compounded this year by low-to-poor seed quality. If damping-off occurs this year, growers may have difficulty finding soybean seed for replanting and may want to consider the following strategies for controlling Phytophthora and Pythium damping-off.
