Assessment Of The Economic Impacts Of Recreational Boating In Virginia, Thomas J. Murray Dec 2012

Assessment Of The Economic Impacts Of Recreational Boating In Virginia, Thomas J. Murray

Reports

Virginia is home to more than 200,000 recreational boats, providing a gateway to marine recreation in Chesapeake Bay and offshore waters. Virginia’s importance to boating access carries with it an expanding economy related to boating and boating related industries.

In addition to the large group of boater-citizens who reside in Virginia, local marine businesses such as marinas also provide access and berthing to many non-locally owned watercraft. While watercraft registrations provide a partial and useful estimate of the stock of boats in a region, the true economic impact arising from recreational boating primarily depends upon the type of ...

Agenda: A Low-Carbon Energy Blueprint For The American West, University Of Colorado Boulder. Natural Resources Law Center, University Of Colorado Boulder. Renewable And Sustainable Energy Institute, Western Resource Advocates, Rocky Mountain Research Station (Fort Collins, Colo.)

A Low-Carbon Energy Blueprint for the American West (Martz Summer Conference, June 6-8)

The future of the planet may depend upon our ability to increase energy supplies even as we reduce carbon emissions. This conference will address how a low-carbon energy program might evolve with a particular focus on the American West. It will focus on the future of energy in the West--on a “managed transition” to a different energy mix, on the need to nest this effort in a framework that acknowledges interconnections, and on identifying the most salient opportunities to consider the legal, political, financial, and technical challenges.

Farm-Scale Production Cost Of Switchgrass For Biomass, Richard Perrin, Kenneth P. Vogel, Marty Schmer, Robert B. Mitchell May 2012

Farm-Scale Production Cost Of Switchgrass For Biomass, Richard Perrin, Kenneth P. Vogel, Marty Schmer, Robert B. Mitchell

Richard K Perrin

The economic potential of cellulosic biomass from switchgrass has heretofore been evaluated using estimates of farm costs based on extrapolation from experimental data and budget estimates. The objective of the project reported here was to estimate the cost of production that would be experienced by farmers on commercial production situations. Switchgrass was produced as a biomass crop on commercial-scale fields by ten contracting farmers located from northern North Dakota to southern Nebraska. Results showed a wide range of yields and costs across the five production years and ten sites, with an overall average cost of $65.86 Mg-1 of ...

Anyone who is involved with the rental market for Iowa farmland knows that rental rates have been pushed significantly higher by the favorable corn and soybean prices that farmers have enjoyed since 2010. This trend continued in 2012.

Early Planted Acres May Lose Replant Insurance, William M. Edwards Apr 2012

Early Planted Acres May Lose Replant Insurance, William M. Edwards

Integrated Crop Management News

Unusually warm and dry weather has allowed crop producers to start spring field work earlier than can be remembered by most people. Getting an early start on tillage and planting reduces the risk of getting behind schedule later if an extended period of rainy weather occurs, but it also has its risks. The Risk Management Agency (USDA) has some specific rules about early planted crops with regard to crop insurance coverage. For each insurable crop RMA has set an “early planting date.” The earliest planting dates allowed for counties in the state of Iowa are April 11 for corn and ...

Energy Use In Pig Production: An Examination Of Current Iowa Systems, Peter J. Lammers, M. Douglas Kenealy, James B. Kliebenstein, Jay D. Harmon, Matthew J. Helmers, Mark S. Honeyman Mar 2012

Energy Use In Pig Production: An Examination Of Current Iowa Systems, Peter J. Lammers, M. Douglas Kenealy, James B. Kliebenstein, Jay D. Harmon, Matthew J. Helmers, Mark S. Honeyman

Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Publications

This paper compares energy use for different pig production systems in Iowa, a leader in US swine production. Pig production systems include not only the growth and performance of the pigs, but also the supporting infrastructure of pig production. This supporting infrastructure includes swine housing, facility management, feedstuff provision, swine diets, and manure management. Six different facility type × diet formulation × cropping sequence scenarios were modeled and compared. The baseline system examined produces 15,600 pigs annually using confinement facilities and a corn-soybean cropping sequence. Diet formulations for the baseline system were corn-soybean meal diets that included the synthetic AA L-lysine ...

Important Crop Insurance Dates, William M. Edwards Feb 2012

Important Crop Insurance Dates, William M. Edwards

Integrated Crop Management News

Even the best crop insurance plan is of little use if the right information is not collected and submitted on time. Likewise, if certain actions are not completed by the necessary date, producers may not receive full benefit from the risk protection that they have selected.

Effects Of A Premolt Calcium And Low-Energy Molt Program On Laying Hen Performance, Egg Quality, And Economics, Emily R. Dickey, Anna Johnson, Kenneth J. Stalder, Kristjan Bregendahl Feb 2012

Effects Of A Premolt Calcium And Low-Energy Molt Program On Laying Hen Performance, Egg Quality, And Economics, Emily R. Dickey, Anna Johnson, Kenneth J. Stalder, Kristjan Bregendahl

Animal Science Publications

The objectives of this study were to evaluate and compare the effects of production, physiology, egg quality, and economics of laying hens housed in a cage system when offered a calcium premolt treatment and low-energy molt diets versus a traditional feed withdrawal (FW) treatment during and after molt. In total, 981 Hy-Line W-36 laying hens (85 wk of age) housed 3 per cage were used. Six treatments were compared in a 2 × 3 factorial design with 2 calcium premolt treatments (fine and coarse) and 3 molt diets (FW, soybean hulls, and wheat middlings). The coarse Ca was a 50:50 ...

Economics Of Residue Harvest: Regional Partnership Evaluation, David W. Archer, David J. Muth Jr., Jacob J. Jacobson, Douglas L. Karlen Jan 2012

Economics Of Residue Harvest: Regional Partnership Evaluation, David W. Archer, David J. Muth Jr., Jacob J. Jacobson, Douglas L. Karlen

David J. Muth

Economic analyses on the viability of corn (Zea mays, L.) stover harvest for bioenergy production have largely been based on simulation modeling. While some studies have utilized field research data, most field-based analyses have included a limited number of sites and a narrow geographic distribution. An Iowa case study is developed illustrating the use of data extracted from a database of geographically distributed field studies for a region-specific economic analysis. The analysis utilizes grain and residue yield and associated management information from two Iowa field research sites that are Sun Grant Regional Partnership locations associated with the Corn Stover Regional ...
