Indian reservations constitute about 2.5% of all land in the country and 5% of all land in the American West. During the last two decades, Indian natural resources issues have moved to the forefront as tribal governments have dramatically expanded their regulatory programs, judicial systems. and resource development activities. This major symposium will address current developments and assess likely future directions in the areas of tribal, federal, and state regulation; tribal-state intergovernmental agreements ...

Impact Of New Technology On Timber Harvesting Costs: Evaluation Methods And Literature, F. W. Cubbage, B. J. Stokes, Steven H. Bullard Jan 1988

Impact Of New Technology On Timber Harvesting Costs: Evaluation Methods And Literature, F. W. Cubbage, B. J. Stokes, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Timber harvesting and transport are crucial components of the cost of delivered wood to forest products processing facilities. In fact, harvesting and delivering wood often costs more than the entire costs of growing wood until harvest. As such, timber harvesting research and development are important. Additionally, research in this area is worthwhile because efficiency gains, cost improvements, and environmental benefits due to timber harvesting research can be realized in a very short time period, rather than the decades-long wait required for research investments in timber growing.

This paper provides an overview of the means of measuring the impact of new ...

Monte Carlo Experiments Of Market Demand Theory , Thulasiram Kesavan Jan 1988

Monte Carlo Experiments Of Market Demand Theory , Thulasiram Kesavan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the present theory for market demand and discussed the limitations and restrictions of theory from an empirical perspective. The objective of the study was to set up a Monte Carlo model to analyze the relationship between consumer demand and market demand and investigate the market approximation characteristics in light of aggregation conditions. Assuming that income and prices follow lognormal distributions individual optimal allocations were computed and aggregated to market data. Then various market demand systems were applied and approximation characteristics were studied in terms of bias and variance of elasticities. The analyses were carried in several experiments ...

Plant-Process Model Corn Yield Forecasts For Iowa , David Russell Krog Jan 1988

Plant-Process Model Corn Yield Forecasts For Iowa , David Russell Krog

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The objective was to develop a plant-process corn yield forecasting model and examine how effective these forecasts might be in improving corn yield forecasts made at the state and crop reporting district level in Iowa. This study was conducted in light of recent budget cuts by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) and elimination of the reporting of district corn yield forecasts in Iowa; Results indicated that district and state plant-process model (PPM) corn yield forecasts perform well compared to NASS forecasts in August and September but not very well in October and November. Also, the PPM forecasts did not ...

The Relevant Geographic Market Area For Fed Cattle And The Changing Structure Of The Beef Packing Industry , Margaret Marstall Schultz Jan 1988

The Relevant Geographic Market Area For Fed Cattle And The Changing Structure Of The Beef Packing Industry , Margaret Marstall Schultz

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The structure of the beef industry has changed dramatically in this century. This phenomenon has given rise to much controversy concerning the competitiveness of the industry in both the economics literature and the courts; One of the key issues in industry organization and antitrust issues is the definition of product and geographic markets. This dissertation attempts three statistical procedures to define markets, each with increasing demands for market information. A fourth procedure is also outlined; Finally, a study of the beef packing industry is conducted within the structure-conduct-performance paradigm, given previously defined product and geographic markets. It was concluded that ...

Response Analysis In A Multi-Crop Environment: The Case Of Food Crop Production In Java, Indonesia , Mohammad Anwar Wardhani Jan 1988

Response Analysis In A Multi-Crop Environment: The Case Of Food Crop Production In Java, Indonesia , Mohammad Anwar Wardhani

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The study investigates the applicability of duality theory and flexible functional forms to small scale Javanese agriculture. Multi-product restricted translog profit functions and cost functions are empirically tested against 1980 household survey data. The focus is given to the majority of farmers growing rice and corn;Profit function models turn out to be less appropriate, which persistently give negative supply elasticities for rice output. Several plausable reasons include, among others, (i) the existence of non-decreasing returns to scale of the underlying technology, (ii) the dominance of regulated rice and fertilizer markets, and (iii) the prevalence of objectives other than economic ...

An Analysis Of The Impacts Of Household Size And Composition On Food Expenditure In Haiti , Deepa Majumdar Jan 1988

An Analysis Of The Impacts Of Household Size And Composition On Food Expenditure In Haiti , Deepa Majumdar

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the problem of malnutrition in Haiti is examined from a food expenditure perspective. Using data from the Haiti household consumer expenditure survey, first a tabular analysis is done to describe the food expenditure patterns. Then, the effects of household size and composition, and total expenditure on food expenditures are examined by estimating Engel relationships. Household composition is introduced in the general and specific scales, and household size effects models. Income elasticities and weights for six age-sex categories are calculated from the parameter estimates. The empirical findings are used to describe the impacts of household size and composition ...

An Econometric Examination Of The Adoption And Use Of Microcomputers By Iowa Farmers , Stephanie Anne Mercier Jan 1988

An Econometric Examination Of The Adoption And Use Of Microcomputers By Iowa Farmers , Stephanie Anne Mercier

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Given the increasing complexity of U.S. farming over the last several decades, farmers have become acutely aware of the need for information as an input in the farm decision-making process. The utilization of a microcomputer or outside paid computer services for managing the flow of data and the conversion of that data into useful information has the potential to enhance the profitability of any farming operation; The primary objectives of this study are to model both the separate and joint decisions of farmers on the adoption and utilization of personal computers and paid computer services. A profit-maximizing conceptual model ...

Economic And Environmental Impacts Of Interstate Water Transfers In The Colorado River Basin , George Edward Oamek Jan 1988

Economic And Environmental Impacts Of Interstate Water Transfers In The Colorado River Basin , George Edward Oamek

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Mathematical programming models of agricultural production in the Colorado River Upper Basin were integrated with a hydrology model of the Colorado River to assess the impacts of transferring water from irrigation uses in the Upper Basin to urban users in the Lower Basin. Two types of strategies were examined and discussed with regards to the changing institutional structure allocating Western water. One strategy involved a long term lease of irrigation water on an annual basis. The other assessed a lease-option strategy by the Lower Basin to take Upper Basin water only when needed. The economic impacts measured were changes in ...

Price Level Risk Management In The Presence Of Commodity Options: Income Distribution, Optimal Market Positions, And Institutional Value , Steven Duane Hanson Jan 1988

Price Level Risk Management In The Presence Of Commodity Options: Income Distribution, Optimal Market Positions, And Institutional Value , Steven Duane Hanson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Optimal risk management behavior is studied for decision makers who wish to manage price level risk with commodity futures and options contracts. The income distribution that results when both futures and put options are held in a risk management portfolio is derived for the case of a known end-of-period output level. The resulting income distribution is the sum of two truncated normal distributions and violates the sufficient condition that causes the linear mean-variance model to produce results which are consistent with expected utility maximization. Numerical integration and numerical optimization methods are developed to solve the expected utility maximization problem. The ...

The Relevant Forecast Of Variance Of Income For Marketing Decisions Under Uncertainty , Steven Scott Duncan Jan 1988

The Relevant Forecast Of Variance Of Income For Marketing Decisions Under Uncertainty , Steven Scott Duncan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation simulated spring and fall soybean marketing decisions with historical prices in order to investigate the economic significance of incorrectly measuring the variance of the return from a marketing alternative. Some authors have suggested that the variance of the forecasted mean price describes the distribution of prices that is relevant for within-year marketing decisions. This dissertation maintained that the variance of the momentary prices is the relevant variance for these marketing decisions. The concept of a momentary variance is important in more than just the future month but is also important in the current or decision month. Comparisons were ...

The Taiwanese Livestock And Feedgrain Markets And Policies , Shang-Chi Gong Jan 1988

The Taiwanese Livestock And Feedgrain Markets And Policies , Shang-Chi Gong

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Government intervention in livestock markets has become a controversial issue in Taiwan. Opponents charge that the policy of restricting pork export whenever the government deems the action necessary has led to a drop in pork prices on Taiwan over time, benefitting pork consumers but cutting deeply into the profitability of hog production. Consequently, there is growing pressure to liberalize pork exports. Similarly, opponents contend that the large imports of frozen beef, subsidized by the Australian government, that have been dumped in Taiwan since 1975, have led to a sharp decline in the domestic price of beef and in cattle inventories ...

Heterogeneous Quality In The International Trade Of Wheat , Bruno Larue Jan 1988

Heterogeneous Quality In The International Trade Of Wheat , Bruno Larue

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzes the implications of heterogeneous quality in the international wheat market, and attempts to explain the decline in U.S. wheat exports between 1980-1986. Theoretical models are used to determine the effects of heterogeneous quality on the behavior of importers and exporters. Two approaches are used to model quality. The characteristic approach is used in Chapters Three, Four, and Five. Chapter Six is based on the assumption that importers have a reservation quality level or threshold. The former approach is adequate to investigate the effects of changes in characteristics such as the percentage of foreign material or dockage ...
