An Economic Analysis Of The Corn Production Efficiency Of Iowa Farm Firms , Michael Robert Rahm Jan 1980

An Economic Analysis Of The Corn Production Efficiency Of Iowa Farm Firms , Michael Robert Rahm

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Disequilibria in product and factor markets force firms to adjust production and reallocate resources. In a dynamic economic environment, production efficiency will depend upon the technical and allocative abilities of farm operators. The human capital approach hypothesizes that technical and allocative abilities are learned as opposed to innate skills;Agriculture is a logical industry to choose for investigating sources of differential firm efficiency. Modern agriculture is characterized by dynamic product and factor markets, rapid technological advances and a relatively uncomplicated management structure. Conceptual models of agricultural production efficiency are formulated. A model of technical efficiency is constructed for analyzing differential ...

A Separable Programming Model Incorporating Linear Demand Functions For Grains And Vegetable Oils: An Analysis Of United States Agriculture In 1985 , Shashanka Bhide Jan 1980

A Separable Programming Model Incorporating Linear Demand Functions For Grains And Vegetable Oils: An Analysis Of United States Agriculture In 1985 , Shashanka Bhide

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Applications of linear programming in analyzing and evaluating various policies related to agriculture have been numerous. The use of quadratic programming is relatively less common. The computational aspects of the problem present an important limitation on the use of quadratic programming when size of the model used is relatively large. In the present study, separable programming was applied to solve a quadratic programming model of U.S. agriculture. The quadratic objective function of the model was transformed into a separable function using eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the demand matrix. The quadratic programming model is formulated in such a way that ...

The Development And Analysis Of A Cooperative Decision Model For Product Pricing And Financial Structure , John Jay Vansickle Jan 1980

The Development And Analysis Of A Cooperative Decision Model For Product Pricing And Financial Structure , John Jay Vansickle

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The cooperative association has become an integral part of the agricultural marketing system. The individual problems of the short-run production and pricing decision and the long-run financial structure decision have been analyzed, but no connection between the two decisions has been specified. No objective has been defined for the two decisions which is consistent between the two;The objectives of this study are: (1) define the decision nexus of the cooperative association; (2) analyze and empirically estimate by regression analysis an empirical specification of the short-run production and pricing sub-model to a data set obtained from a 1979 survey of ...

Estimated Impacts Of A Land Set-Aside Policy On United States Agriculture In 1985: A Quadratic Programming Analysis , Albert Essel Jan 1980

Estimated Impacts Of A Land Set-Aside Policy On United States Agriculture In 1985: A Quadratic Programming Analysis , Albert Essel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Agricultural policy makers in the United States have become increasingly concerned with several facets of economic and structural developments in American agriculture. Over most of the last fifty years, technological innovations and various input substitutions have combined to bring about enormous increases in food supply. At this same period, the important characteristics that influence domestic demand of farm products such as prices and income elasticities of demand and population growth have been declining or growing at very slow rates. The interaction of these have resulted in lowered food prices, depressed farm incomes, labor migration and pressures on the rural community ...

An Application Of Bayesian Decision Models In Evaluating Net Returns Of Paddy Farm Storage By Farmers In The Central Plain Of Thailand , Banterng Masang Jan 1980

An Application Of Bayesian Decision Models In Evaluating Net Returns Of Paddy Farm Storage By Farmers In The Central Plain Of Thailand , Banterng Masang

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

At harvest time, rice farmers can sell their paddy at the existing price, or can choose to store their paddy and sell at a future, uncertain price. The decisions are made under conditions of uncertainty. The paddy prices in the future months are the primary source of the uncertainty; The objective of this study was to develop marketing decision models to determine expected prices and expected net returns on farm storage. These models might be used to assist the rice farmers in making better decisions. Two Bayesian marketing decision models were developed: (1) Single-stage model; the decisions are made only ...

Markov Process Models: An Application To The Study Of The Structure Of Agriculture , Steven E. Zumbach Jan 1980

Markov Process Models: An Application To The Study Of The Structure Of Agriculture , Steven E. Zumbach

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Factors which affect the number and size of farm firms were identified and analyzed in the context of the micro-economic theory of the firm. Historical changes in the structure of the agriculture industry were analyzed by summarizing changes in farm numbers by size class, tenure arrangement, organizational structure, vertical coordination, and purchased inputs;A detailed discussion of the underlying theory of a Markov process and an outlining of the Markov process model which could be used to study the structure of agriculture industry was presented. The results of the application of both a stationary and nonstationary Markov process model were ...

An Economic Analysis Of Household Farm Production In The Arssi Region Of Ethiopia: Cases From Chilalo Province , Sisay Asefa Jan 1980

An Economic Analysis Of Household Farm Production In The Arssi Region Of Ethiopia: Cases From Chilalo Province , Sisay Asefa

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is concerned with the problem of low productivity and deficiency in the agricultural sector as it results in low farm income and rural poverty in the Ethiopian economy. This problem is of central concern for national economic development since agriculture which comprises 85% of the population forms the backbone of the country's economy. The prescriptive hypothesis made as a potential strategy for solving this crucial problem is that farm productivity can be increased by: (a) a more efficient use of traditional farm inputs and improvements in management capabilities of farmers that results in better planning and efficient ...

An Evaluation Of Improved Sole-Crop Production Technology On Small Farms In Northern Nigeria Under Different Farm Power Sources: A Multi-Period Linear Programming Approach , Abraham Oyediji Ogungbile Jan 1980

An Evaluation Of Improved Sole-Crop Production Technology On Small Farms In Northern Nigeria Under Different Farm Power Sources: A Multi-Period Linear Programming Approach , Abraham Oyediji Ogungbile

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The basic problem of small farms in Northern Nigeria is low productivity and consequently a chronic low farm income. Potential strategies often suggested to solve the problem include: (a) the use of improved technology such as commercial fertilizers, insecticides, improved seed varieties and planting materials. This form of technology is considered capable of increasing output on the existing area currently under cultivation, (b) agricultural output can also be increased by bringing more land into cultivation. This approach will necessitate the use of some form of labor-augmenting chemical or mechanical devices relevant to the felt needs of the small farmer in ...

An Information Theory Analysis Of Grades And Grading With An Application To Beef Cattle , John David Hanson Jan 1980

An Information Theory Analysis Of Grades And Grading With An Application To Beef Cattle , John David Hanson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Information theory is used for the quantitative evaluation of beef grading schemes. This study assumes that the primary purpose of a grading scheme is to provide information about the quantities of selected quality characteristics contained in graded lots of a commodity; The entropy function is interpreted as a measure of the amount of uncertainty that exists about the quantities of quality characteristics per unit of commodity prior to receipt of a quality report. An information channel is used to represent a grading scheme, with the quantities of the quality characteristics per unit of commodity interpreted as inputs to the channel ...

Competitive Partial Equilibrium Analysis Of U.S. Agriculture Under Alternative Energy And Export Situations - Application Of Separable And Chance Constrained Programming , Ashok Kumar Chowdhury Jan 1980

Competitive Partial Equilibrium Analysis Of U.S. Agriculture Under Alternative Energy And Export Situations - Application Of Separable And Chance Constrained Programming , Ashok Kumar Chowdhury

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

As an energy source for machinery operations, irrigation, crop drying and manufacture of fertilizer and agricultural chemicals, fossil fuels form a critical group of inputs in crop production. In the United States, agricultural exports are becoming increasingly important in balancing trade deficits caused by imported energy. A national quadratic programming model is used in this study to analyze the impact of alternative energy price and agricultural export situations on U.S. agriculture in the year 1985. The model is solved by using separable programming. Uncertainty incorporated in export, the model also is solved under a chance constrained programming framework. The ...

Commodity Options As An Alternative To Hedging Live Cattle , Lowell B. Catlett Jan 1980

Commodity Options As An Alternative To Hedging Live Cattle , Lowell B. Catlett

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Commodity options are currently illegal in the United States but the Commodity Futures Trading Commission is trying to initiate a pilot trading program. The success of a trial trading period depends very heavily on the type of option market established, trading rules and regulations, and how well options perform as a hedging mechanism. This study addresses the details of buying and granting calls, puts, and doubles while discussing the major problem areas facing the commodity option market. A simulation model is developed to create a synthetic options market for live cattle futures to test if options can be an alternative ...
