Impacts Of Government Pricing Policies On Agricultural Production And The Achievement Of Government Policy Objectives In Zambia , Joseph Fosu Jan 1987

Impacts Of Government Pricing Policies On Agricultural Production And The Achievement Of Government Policy Objectives In Zambia , Joseph Fosu

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This Dissertation examines the impacts of government's pricing policies on agricultural production and the achievement of stated agricultural policy objectives in the Republic of Zambia. The specific pricing issues of 'border pricing' as an alternative pricing strategy to the existing pricing regime and 'maize price and fertilizer subsidy' as alternative pricing strategies for achieving the objectives of maize self-sufficiency and agricultural export promotion simultaneously were investigated.;The procedures generally followed in analyzing the impacts of agricultural pricing and market intervention policies are briefly reviewed. The general economic and agricultural specific policies, the production technology and policy issues that existed ...

Ec Common Agricultural Policy And The World Trade In Feed Grain: A Multi-Region Nonspatial Price Equilibrium Analysis , Aniss Bahreinian Jan 1987

Ec Common Agricultural Policy And The World Trade In Feed Grain: A Multi-Region Nonspatial Price Equilibrium Analysis , Aniss Bahreinian

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Since the adoption of the Common Agricultural Policy in 1962, the members of the European Economic Community have protected their common borders against the importation of certain agricultural commodities. Heavy variable levies and high guaranteed producer prices have triggered rise in market prices followed by a rise in grain production in EC countries. Therefore, the number one grain importing region of the 1960s has transformed into a major grain exporting region of the 1980s. These developments led to many objections from the grain exporting countries, followed by bilateral and multilateral negotiations, with little if any success; The general concern of ...

International Monetary And Exchange Rate Policies And World Agricultural Markets: The Case Of Soybeans And Soybean Products , Taleb Mohammad Awad Jan 1987

International Monetary And Exchange Rate Policies And World Agricultural Markets: The Case Of Soybeans And Soybean Products , Taleb Mohammad Awad

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The main objective of the study is to quantitatively evaluate the effects of a monetary policy change by a given country on the world soybean and products markets. A system of bilateral exchange rate equations is incorporated into a multi-country nonspatial price equilibrium model of world soybean and products markets. The bilateral exchange rate equations are based on a stock-flow approach to exchange rate determination and do not require either the purchasing power parity nor the interest parity conditions to hold. In addition, exchange rate expectations are endogenized in the model using an extrapolative, quasi-rational approach. The regional soybean, soymeal ...

Private Provision Of Local Rural Roads , Cathy A. Hamlett Jan 1987

Private Provision Of Local Rural Roads , Cathy A. Hamlett

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The rural road and bridge problem is the lack of funds to upgrade and maintain the rapidly deteriorating rural transportation infrastructure. The research analyzed the concept of privately provided public roads through a utility maximization model, with a joint product aspect. The jointness coming from the private, public benefits of a road. Equilibrium conditions of road provision, under Nash-Cournot behavior, were derived. A comparative static analysis was conducted on the Nash-Cournot model. Pareto-optimizing behavior was also investigated and the results compared to Nash-Cournot provision levels. The Pareto-optimal model indicated conditions where a set of roads could be abandoned;A benefit-cost ...

The Value Of Near Infrared Reflectance Measurement Of Feedgrain Nutrient Composition , Steven Roger Meyer Jan 1987

The Value Of Near Infrared Reflectance Measurement Of Feedgrain Nutrient Composition , Steven Roger Meyer

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

To determine the value of near infrared reflectance (NIR) measurement of corn nutrient composition to livestock feeders, sequential decision models of beef cattle and swine feeding were developed. Corn composition data from the National Feedstuff Composition Data Bank (NFCDB) were used to derive probability density functions for crude protein, fat, and lysine content. Expected values of profit and other variables were computed by numerical integration. Means of crude protein and lysine of the NFCDB sample were lower and higher, respectively, than National Research Council estimates. These differences caused errors in diet formulations which resulted in losses due to imperfect information ...
