Extensions Of Least-Cost Diets Through Linear Programming: Three Essays , Christopher James Patrick Power Faiferlick Jan 1985

Extensions Of Least-Cost Diets Through Linear Programming: Three Essays , Christopher James Patrick Power Faiferlick

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is divided into three essays. Essay One, "Least-Cost American Diets for the 1980s: The Impacts of Improved Information on Nutrition and Health," addresses the effect of increasing the number of nutritional constraints, for example, amino acids, on an optimal diet. "Health" constraints, which are recommendations to increase longevity and reduce the incidence of certain diseases, are also analyzed. The inclusion of vitamin supplements as an activity is also included. Finally, traditional shadow prie analysis is replaced with cost flexibility analysis;Essay Two, "A Comparison of Type A and Strictly Least-Cost Diets with Plate Waste Considerations and Added Nutrients ...

An Assessment Of Farm-Level Input Demands And Production Under Risk On Rice Farms In The Cimanuk River Basin, Jawa Barat, Indonesia , Budiman Hutabarat Jan 1985

An Assessment Of Farm-Level Input Demands And Production Under Risk On Rice Farms In The Cimanuk River Basin, Jawa Barat, Indonesia , Budiman Hutabarat

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This research is an attempt to gain some insights into farm-level production decision-making. Two separate analyses are performed and implemented on the data from a survey of rice farms in the Cimanuk River Basin, Jawa Barat, Indonesia. The first analysis is an economic analysis of farm-level input demand by considering seed selection as an endogenous variable dictated by the perceived potential cost that has to be borne by the farmer in his actual state of action. Therefore, the total input demand consists of the input demand effect and the seed selection effect in line with the induced-innovation hypothesis in part ...

The Impact Of Farmland Price Changes On Farm Size, Financial Structure Enterprise Choice , James M. Lowenberg-Deboer Jan 1985

The Impact Of Farmland Price Changes On Farm Size, Financial Structure Enterprise Choice , James M. Lowenberg-Deboer

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This research develops a theoretical framework within which the impact of farmland capital gains and losses on agricultural production, finance, and enterprise choice decisions can be analyzed. A preliminary test of this theoretical model is conducted using a deterministic dynamic programming model of a central Iowa farm firm in the period 1970-1984. Though the theoretical model was developed to examine the impact of farmland price changes, it may be extended to analyze decisions involving any durable assets which may earn capital gains or losses; The model suggests that real estate capital gains provide incentives to increase farm acreage, incur greater ...

Economics Of Conservation Tillage And Soil Productivity In North Central Iowa: A Control Theory Approach , Carlos Alberto Ibañez-Meier Jan 1985

Economics Of Conservation Tillage And Soil Productivity In North Central Iowa: A Control Theory Approach , Carlos Alberto Ibañez-Meier

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The major difficulty in the soil productivity issue is quantifying the user cost of soil erosion. Previous research has failed to answer the question of what soil is worth for crop production. The price of a unit of soil is a costate variable computed in this study by a deterministic optimal control model and found to range from 30.00 to 65.00 per cm. per acre in North Central Iowa, depending upon the tillage method and whether the farmland is managed by society, an owner, or a renter.;Another difficulty is the availability of data showing the long-term effects ...

A Stochastic Simulation Of The Impact Of Price Insulation Policies On World Wheat Market Stability , Ramatu Mahama Jan 1985

A Stochastic Simulation Of The Impact Of Price Insulation Policies On World Wheat Market Stability , Ramatu Mahama

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A nonspatial wheat trade model is developed for wheat. Stochastic simulation of the model is performed to determine the impact of insulated wheat markets in India, and the European Community, on the stability of world wheat prices. The effect of production variability in the Soviet Union on the stability of the world wheat market is also examined; The research shows widespread price intervention in world wheat trade, with price transmissions between world and domestic markets limited to only the United States, Canada, and Australia. A 79 percent reduction in production variability in the U.S.S.R. lowers U.S ...

The Impact Of Management Ability And Market Structure On The Performance Of Agricultural Banks In Iowa , Kerry William Tudor Jan 1985

The Impact Of Management Ability And Market Structure On The Performance Of Agricultural Banks In Iowa , Kerry William Tudor

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The effects of management ability and market structure on the performance of agricultural banks are assessed using observations on 444 Iowa banks from the years 1976 and 1978. Management ability is measured by the ratio of assets to employees, market structure is measured by a Herfindahl index and a market share variable, and bank performance is represented by the ratio of loans to total assets and the ratio of time and savings deposits to total deposits. Ordinary least squares analysis indicates that market structure strongly influences the ratio of time and savings deposits to total deposits but does not influence ...
