Human Development and Family Studies Publications

Objective To examine the association between food insecurity and body mass index (BMI) from early adolescence to adulthood.

Study design Growth curve analyses were performed. Sex differences were examined by conducting the analyses separately by sex. Ten data points were examined over a 16-year period from age 15 to 31 years. Data were obtained from the Family Transitions Project, a longitudinal study of 559 adolescents and their families that was initiated in 1989 in the Midwest. Primarily rural, non-Hispanic whites were selected based on the economic farm crisis. We examined participants from adolescence to adulthood from 1991 through 2007. Measures ...

The Determinants Of Rural Population Growth And Decline, 1950-1990: The Roles Of Government Policy, Human Capital, And Farm And Nonfarm Income , Tzu-Ling Huang

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In the past few decades, changes in economic conditions for off-farm labor markets and improvements in agriculture technology have led to substantial reductions in farm population in the United States. However, rural populations are not decreasing uniformly, either across counties or over decades. Rates of change in farm and nonfarm populations vary widely across rural counties. The variation of population growth across counties and between farm and nonfarm population raise two questions in this study: (1) What affects the population growth and decline in US rural counties? (2) Do those factors affect farm and nonfarm populations differently?;This study is ...

Health Uncertainty And Food Consumption In Low-Income Households In Lima, Peru , Chris Daniel Gingrich Jan 1995

Health Uncertainty And Food Consumption In Low-Income Households In Lima, Peru , Chris Daniel Gingrich

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the relationships between health uncertainty and food consumption among low-income households in developing countries. The particular sample households are from Lima, Peru's bottom expenditure quartile. Several food and nonfood inputs are important factors affecting health status and health variance. In addition, there is strong evidence that expected health status and health risk affect the consumption of several food commodities; The model also provides a means of analyzing the effects of policy alternatives on food consumption, expected health status, and health risk. The results show that education programs and price subsidies for tubers and dairy products are ...

Functional Explanation And Metaphysical Individualism, Justin Schwartz Jan 1993

Functional Explanation And Metaphysical Individualism, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

A number of (present or former) analytical Marxists, such as Jon Elster, have argued that functional explanation has almost no place in the social sciences. (Although the discussion is framed in terms of a debate among analytical Marxists, the point is quite general, and Marxism is used for illustrative purposes.) Functional explanation accounts for what is to be explained by reference to its function; thus, sighted organism have eyes because eyes enable them to see. Elster and other critics of functional explanation argue that this pattern of explanation is inconsistent with "methodological individualism," the idea, as they understand it, that ...

KWRRI Research Reports

Samples of water, bottom fauna, and fishes were collected from 66 stations in the Salt River and one of its principal tributaries, the Beech Fork and its tributary, the Chaplin River, Kentucky. Precipitation ranged from 38.86 inches (1969) to 58.04 inches (1970), an increase of nearly 50 percent with marked fluctuations in discharge. Intensive comparisons of phosphates, sulfates, specific conductance, total alkalinity, total hardness, and turbidity showed the streams to be relatively clean and healthy. Nearly 300 different kinds of benthic organisms and other macroinvertebrates have been collected and identified from the basin. Detailed studies of caddisflies and ...

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ALTHOUGH every housewife tries to serve fresh foods, she often has food left over from the family meal.Rather than waste this food, she will reheat it for another meal.

This reheating of food is necessary to prevent waste, but freshly cooked foods are, of course, to be preferred from every angle for nutrition, flavour and appearance.
