The Political Economy Of International Agricultural Protection , Virender Gautam Jan 1993

The Political Economy Of International Agricultural Protection , Virender Gautam

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study has been to investigate some prominent determinants of agricultural protection across industrialized and developing countries. The hypotheses tested are that consumers' food security concerns and producers' pressure group characteristics play an eminent role in the determination of political market equilibrium in the agricultural sector. The methodology employed provides an integrated development of theoretical and empirical analysis; The comparative static results of the theoretical models are tested using the ordinary least squares, generalized least squares, pooled cross-section time-series, and Probit and Logit estimation techniques. The analysis includes data from 30 industrialized and developing countries for the ...

Essays In Dynamic Adjustment, Structural Change And Data Analysis: Applications To The Demand For Meat In The Us , Jacinto Fama Fabiosa Jan 1993

Essays In Dynamic Adjustment, Structural Change And Data Analysis: Applications To The Demand For Meat In The Us , Jacinto Fama Fabiosa

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A number of reasons are cited in the literature to explain the over rejection of theoretical demand properties in empirical studies. This dissertation examines two of the most common explanations; the Dynamic Adjustment Hypothesis (DAH) and the Structural Change Hypothesis (SCH), as it is applied to meat demand in the U.S. That is, failure to account for dynamics and variation of parameters over time may be the root cause of the over rejection. Despite the inclusion of dynamics and parameter variation in the model, however, the theoretical demand properties still can not be accepted; The first paper clearly shows ...

A Theoretical And Financial Analysis Of Pork Production Contracts , Chris Lynn Hillburn Jan 1993

A Theoretical And Financial Analysis Of Pork Production Contracts , Chris Lynn Hillburn

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A theoretical model of pork production contracts using the principal-agent framework is used to investigate optimal compensation schedules for both feeders and owners. The optimal compensation schedules derived may take on a variety of forms, but all payment schedules should contain an inverse relationship between the quality and quantity of inputs provided by the owner and the compensation provided to the feeder;A simulation analysis is used to investigate the risk and returns to both the feeder and the owner for feeder pig finishing and feeder pig production contracts. For the owner the returns from a contract are similar (though ...

Demand For Risky Foods And Food Safety , Kung-Cheng Lin Jan 1993

Demand For Risky Foods And Food Safety , Kung-Cheng Lin

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A demand for risky food model is constructed to study several aspects of food safety problems. On the basis of this proposed model, results are addressed in the following. First, when the food safety is exogenously fixed, an increase in the safety level of the risky food X[subscript]1 increases the demand for X[subscript]1 if X[subscript]1 is normal. However, when both goods are risky, a rise in the safety level of one good generally has an ambiguous effect on the demands. For the case where the safety level is endogenously chosen, the consumer will in ...

Forecasting The Probability Distribution Of Us Harvest Time Average Corn Prices , Daniel Michael O'Brien Jan 1993

Forecasting The Probability Distribution Of Us Harvest Time Average Corn Prices , Daniel Michael O'Brien

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A procedure is developed which provides preharvest forecasts of the probability distribution of U.S. harvest time average corn prices. Crop-weather models are used to estimate the relationship between corn yields, technology trends and weather conditions for seventeen corn producing regions in the U.S. Corn Belt at monthly intervals throughout the growing season. Probability distributions of U.S. corn production forecasts are derived based on historic production forecast accuracy. To produce price forecasts, a corn price model is estimated from corn supply and demand information available to the market at harvest time. Forecasts of the probability distribution of U ...

Report Of Developed Services In The El Pinalito Village Of The Chiquimula Municipality, Department Of Chiquimula, Fredy Samuel Coronado López Jan 1993

Report Of Developed Services In The El Pinalito Village Of The Chiquimula Municipality, Department Of Chiquimula, Fredy Samuel Coronado López

Theses and Dissertations

This paper reports on efforts to improve socioeconomic conditions and natural resource use in the El Pina lito community, department of Chiquimula, Guatemala. Students participating in supervised practical training at Centro Universitario de Oriente/Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (CUNORI) developed projects to address these issues. A general diagnostic instrument was created for this community to assist in the development of specific work projects. Students prepared community first-aid kits, agricultural activities with school children, and instructional sessions with farmers on how to prepare a family garden and efficiently manage domestic animals. Other activities included ornamental tree preparation for female ...
