Soil erodes over six times faster from cultivated Iowa cropland than from pastureland, even though almost 12 percent more of the pastureland acres are classified as highly erodible than the cropland acres. Because of serious concern about excessive erosion of Iowa's topsoil, profitable alternatives to row-crop production are needed for soils like those found in much of southern Iowa.

Using Futures And Option Contracts To Manage Price And Quantity Risk: A Case Of Corn Farmers In Central Iowa , Li-Fen Lei Jan 1992

Using Futures And Option Contracts To Manage Price And Quantity Risk: A Case Of Corn Farmers In Central Iowa , Li-Fen Lei

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The overall objective of this study is to examine the optimal responses of a risk-averse corn producer to price and quantity risks within a framework where both futures and option contracts are available as risk management tools. The corn farmer is selected as a representative decision maker because corn is the most important crop in Iowa;Numerical techniques are used to solve the expected utility maximization problem for the corn producer. In forming his subjective probability distributions about random variables, the farmer is assumed to predicate output which will be sell to cash market at a later date and use ...

A Production And Pricing Decision Model For The Korean Agricultural Cooperatives , Saim Woo Han Jan 1992

A Production And Pricing Decision Model For The Korean Agricultural Cooperatives , Saim Woo Han

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to introduce the idea that a farm cooperative is a decision unit in Korea, and to develop a short-run model of the cooperative which could be used to analyze its problems; In particular, an attempt was made to develop under certainty a normative-prescriptive model of a diversified multi-product marketing, supply inputs and consumption goods cooperative which served both member and nonmember patrons, and also develop a model of a multi-product marketing and supply cooperative under uncertainty;Development of the model under certainty began with the construction of a sub-model of a typical multi-product member ...

Overreaction In Futures Markets , Robert Frederick Baur Jan 1992

Overreaction In Futures Markets , Robert Frederick Baur

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Market efficiency is tested in futures markets by forming portfolios of futures contracts on the basis of previous price changes. Contracts with extreme positive (negative) price change are added to winner (loser) portfolios. Market efficiency requires the expected return on these two portfolios to be statistically equal. Buy-and-hold portfolios from sixty-six futures markets from a sample period of January, 1964 to April, 1992 are formed to test for the existence of risk premiums. This study extends DeBondt and Thaler (1985) by applying a similar strategy to futures markets where selection bias should not be a problem;Contrary to their findings ...

Double cropping, a system in which more than one crop is produced per year in a land area, helps to increase food and feed production in the United States. But the impact of double cropping on production of biomass (crops grown to be converted to fuel) has not been evaluated. Such cropping systems have been successful in the eastern and southern United States. If they can be adapted to the relatively short growing season of the extremely large and agriculturally productive north-central region of the United States, biomass production potential can be greatly increased.

Economic Impacts Of Growth Promotants In The Beef, Pork And Poultry Industries , Brian Lee Buhr Jan 1992

Economic Impacts Of Growth Promotants In The Beef, Pork And Poultry Industries , Brian Lee Buhr

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Advances in biotechnology have resulted in the potential for use of growth promotants in commercial livestock production. Somatotropins and beta-agonists are the two growth enhancers most likely to be used in beef, pork, and chicken production. The growth promotants increase production efficiency and also result in improved lean composition of meat;Commercial availability of growth promotants will have impacts on all participants in meat production, including producers, processors, consumers, crop producers, and the government, and their possible use has been controversial. The objective of this study is to determine the likely economic impacts of the adoption of growth promotants by ...
