International Journal of Exercise Science 12(6): 412-424, 2019. This study examined effects of caffeine (CAF) on power output (PO) selection and associated physiological responses during cycling at moderate and high intensities prescribed by RPE (0-10 scale). Participants (n = 9) (VO2peak: 55.4 ± 6.32 mL · kg-1 · min-1) cycled for 20 min at RPE4 and 20 min at RPE7 separated by 10 min recovery following caffeine (CAF) (6 mg · kg-1) and placebo (PLA) ingestion. PURPOSE: To assess how accurately Division II NCAA football players can predict repetitions-to-failure (RTF) during the bench press exercise using an absolute load of 225-lbs by comparing predicted repetitions-to-failure with actual repetitions-to-failure. METHODS: Twenty football players (age 20 ± 2 years; height 1.85 ± .06 m; weight 110.1 ± 19.3 kg) without muscular or skeletal injuries were tested for their 1repetition maximum (1-RM) in the bench press, and then performed 1 set to concentric failure with 225-lbs. Periodization of athlete training load to improve performance and maximize recovery, while reducing injuries and overtraining, is essential in team sports. Understanding internal load responses and monitoring athlete exertion and recovery can help coaches during a competitive season. Recovery Status (PRS) and Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) are two subjective scales used to help quantify training load and recovery.
