Feasibility And Analysis Of A Hybrid Spacesuit Architecture For Planetary Surface Exploration, Roger Huerta I Lluch

This Thesis presents a novel hybrid spacesuit architecture concept to enable planetary exploration by combining mechanical counterpressure (MCP) with gas-pressurization (GP). This conceptual design has the potential to offer a quantifiable increase in mobility, increases in safety through pressure layer redundancy, and decreased pre-breathe time to improve operational efficiency.

The Thesis performs an engineering study on the concept. Background: Pediatric prosthetists and physical therapists have observed that use of prosthetic feet with different stiffnesses affects external hip rotation during walking in toddlers with unilateral transtibial amputations (TTAs). A protocol for prescribing pediatric prosthetic feet is needed to minimize injury from improper biomechanics.

Methods: 12 toddlers participated in this study (9 non-amputee, 3 with a TTA). Three custom passive prosthetic feet were made for each toddler with a TTA. Kinetic and kinematic data was at 0.50 m/s. Peak hip joint angles and range of motion were determined in the sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes.

During daily life, people walk from one point to another. Sometimes they choose to walk along designated paths; other times they take shortcuts. To determine how humans weigh costs like time, metabolic energy expenditure, and metabolic intensity, I studied subjects making walking decisions about walking up a hill vs. along a level surface for various distances. I hypothesized that subjects would be indifferent to walking uphill at an 8.5% grade vs. on the level when the two options required the same time or the same amount of metabolic energy.
