The objective of this study was to quantify differences in thermal and mechanical nociception thresholds when sows are in painful and non-painful lameness states. Twelve, clinically healthy, mixed-parity, crossbred sows were used for each of the nociceptive threshold tests. This project examined the feasibility of producing USDA Choice beef—without grain-based finishing—through genetic selection and pasture management. Purebred Angus heifers with high-marbling potential and small/medium frame size were born spring 2011. Heifers were allotted to either pasture (grass-finishing) or feedlot (grain-fed) treatments based on liveweight and intramuscular fat content. When reaching market weight (±1,000 lb) heifers were harvested and carcass data was collected. Feedlot cattle were marketed on August 27, 2012. Oral meloxicam was administered to sows post-farrowing to investigate a novel route of providing analgesia to processed piglets via translactational drug transfer. Physiologic indicators of piglet pain were analyzed to determine the effects on pain control. An effective meloxicam dosage was reached in 4/5 sow litters with no adverse clinical effects. Both piglet cortisol and cranial skin temperature measured by infrared thermography indicated significant differences in pain biomarkers between treatment groups. The objective of this experiment was to describe the magnitude and variation of measures of ocular pain in cattle experiencing corneal scarification and corneal ulcerations associated with experimentally induced IBK. In our study, pressure algometry may be appropriate to quantify ocular pain in calves. This information will enable appropriate design of studies for assessing the extent of ocular pain associated with ophthalmic abnormalities in cattle and efficacy of pain mitigation strategies.

Achieving anesthesia without DEA controlled drugs prior to administration of IV potassium chloride (KCl) is a limiting factor for humane euthanasia. An overdose of xylazine hydrochloride (XH) is thought by some to induce unconsciousness and is commonly administered prior to IV KCl injection. This study’s purpose was to determine the level of unconsciousness achieved from an overdose of XH in cattle.

The objective of this study was to determine if diet influences behavioral responsiveness to novel stimuli as assessed by human approach (HAT) and novel object tests (NOT). Eighty Yorkshire barrows were fed a high fiber, low energy diet or a low fiber, high energy diet. Testing occurred over four consecutive weeks between 1300 and 1700 h. Barrows were tested individually within a 4.9 x 2.4 m test arena. Throughout the test, zone activity, escape attempts, freezing, urination, and defecation behaviors were recorded. We hypothesized that meloxicam administration to beef steers before shipping may be effective at reducing the impact of transportation on stress biomarkers. Circulating physiological biomarkers of stress were analyzed in a transportation trial between a meloxicam treatment group and a placebo treatment group. There were significant differences in stress biomarkers between treatment groups following transport. This suggests that there may be practical benefits for the use of long-acting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), specifically meloxicam, to mitigate the negative effect of transport on cattle physiology.
