I Was Hungry And You Gave Me Food, Ronald Vos Oct 2004

I Was Hungry And You Gave Me Food, Ronald Vos

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

The author begins by defining the concepts of worldview and describes the impact of three common worldviews on the issue of agriculture and holistic development. He then explains a view of reality consistent with God's revelation in Scripture but too often ignored by Christians. Lastly, he gives practical examples and identifies some implications of the worldview for agriculture, hunger, and water.

Do Macroeconomic Shocks Impact The Economic Efficiency Of Small Farmers? The Case Of Wetland Rice Farmers In Indonesia, Jacinto F. Fabiosa, Helen H. Jensen, Dong Yan May 2004

Do Macroeconomic Shocks Impact The Economic Efficiency Of Small Farmers? The Case Of Wetland Rice Farmers In Indonesia, Jacinto F. Fabiosa, Helen H. Jensen, Dong Yan

CARD Working Papers

This study examines the impact of macroeconomic shocks on the efficiency of small farmers. We estimate single- and multiple-factor efficiency measures for Indonesian rice farmers in years before, during, and after the country's macroeconomic crisis. We find that productive efficiency declined by 7 to 22 percent during the crisis, largely because of a decline in technical efficiency and a relatively large volatility in efficiency (the coefficient of variation was larger by a factor of 1.87). Allocative efficiency, on the other hand, increased slightly and offset part of the decrease in technical efficiency. The magnitude of the impact on ...

Influence Of Fall Grazing By Sheep On Plant Productivity, Shrub Age Class Structure And Herbaceous Species Diversity In Sagebrush Steppe, Ryan Duncan Woodland May 2004

Influence Of Fall Grazing By Sheep On Plant Productivity, Shrub Age Class Structure And Herbaceous Species Diversity In Sagebrush Steppe, Ryan Duncan Woodland

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Managing Wyoming Big Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis) systems biologically with grazing can potentially reduce costs and increase both biodiversity and understory production as well as rejuvenate Wyoming Big Sagebrush (ARTRWY). Sheep were provided a protein-energy supplement to facilitate use of the secondary metabolites found in ARTRWY forage. Phytomass ( ) was estimated for the following plant categories: total phytomass, current annual growth (CAG) of ARTRWY, the woody portion of ARTRWY, CAG of other shrubs, the woody portion of other shrubs, grasses, forbs, litter, and standing dead material. I also measured plant species richness and abundance, as well as estimates of the ...

Nutrient Concentrations In Manure Storage Facilities, John Harrison, Dallen Smith

All Current Publications

The objective of this fact sheet is to help producers understand the nutrient loss and retention characteristics of different types of manure storage. The concentration of nutrients in manure storage facilities is important for planning land application activities. Nutrient concentration is usually the critical factor in determining the amount of manure to be spread per acre of land. Manure systems similar in type and management may have characteristically similar concentrations of manure nutrients.

Animal Manure Removal Methods For Manure Storage Facilities, John Harrison, Dallen Smith Apr 2004

Animal Manure Removal Methods For Manure Storage Facilities, John Harrison, Dallen Smith

All Current Publications

A well-designed manure storage facility must also be well managed to prevent environmental concerns from developing. Probably the single most important requirement in operating and maintaining a manure storage facility is to ensure that the facility does not overflow or discharge.

Lagoon Monitoring And Condition Parameters, John Harrison, Dallen Smith Mar 2004

Lagoon Monitoring And Condition Parameters, John Harrison, Dallen Smith

All Current Publications

Lagoons combine storage and treatment functions and thus are more sensitive to management inputs than are solid or slurry facilities. The establishment and maintenance of desirable microbiological populations in lagoons requires more specific procedures in the way lagoons are loaded and monitored.

Subsurface Acidity, Mike Bolland, Chris Gazey, Amanda Miller, Dave Gartner, Julie-Anne Roche Feb 2004

Subsurface Acidity, Mike Bolland, Chris Gazey, Amanda Miller, Dave Gartner, Julie-Anne Roche

Bulletins 4000 -

Productive agriculture increases the concentration of hydrogen ions in soil, which acidifies the soil.

Aluminium is a component of many soil constituents, including clays and oxides, and is also present on the surfaces of soil organic matter. As the concentration of hydrogen ions in soil increases, soil pH decreases, and aluminium starts to dissolve from the soil constituents, increasing the concentration of aluminium ions in soil solution.

As the concentration of aluminium ions in the solution increases, the aluminium in the soil solution becomes increasingly toxic to plant roots, reducing root growth. The smaller amounts of plant roots explore a ...

FAPRI Staff Reports

The FAPRI 2004 U.S. and World Agricultural Outlook presents final projections of world agricultural production, consumption, and trade. Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI) projections assume average weather patterns worldwide, existing policy, policy commitments under current trade agreements, and new policy changes such as the enlargement of the European Union and Common Agricultural Policy reforms. FAPRI projections do not include conjectures on potential policy changes. The major macroeconomic drivers of the 2004 FAPRI baseline are the continuing solid economic growth worldwide, and currency movements against the U.S. dollar.

Ec04-704 Precision Agriculture: Listening To The Story Told By Yield Maps, Viacheslav I. Adamchuk, Achim Dobermann, Jianli Ping Jan 2004

Ec04-704 Precision Agriculture: Listening To The Story Told By Yield Maps, Viacheslav I. Adamchuk, Achim Dobermann, Jianli Ping

Historical Materials from University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension

When discussing current issues in precision agriculture, the terms “yield mapping” or “yield monitoring” often are used to refer to one of the most crucial components of the entire system for site-specific crop management. In fact, yield monitoring equipment was introduced in the early 1990s and is increasingly considered a conventional practice in modern agriculture. The pioneers of precision agriculture already have generated several years of yield history and have examined different ways of interpreting and processing these data. The goal of this publication is to review several common methods of yield data analysis and to discuss potential applications for ...

Pathogenesis And Transmission Of Hepatitis E Virus (Hev) In Pigs, Chaiyan Kasorndorkbua Jan 2004

Pathogenesis And Transmission Of Hepatitis E Virus (Hev) In Pigs, Chaiyan Kasorndorkbua

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Human hepatitis E virus (HEV) was first reported in 1980 and is now considered a major cause of acute non-A, non-B hepatitis in humans. HEV infection is reported throughout the world and occurs in epidemic form in developing countries where the disease is endemic and is often associated with water contamination after heavy rains or flooding. Sporadic human HEV infections occur in industrialized countries where infected individuals contract the infection while traveling to endemic regions. The fecal-oral route is considered the primary mode of HEV transmission in humans. HEV infection of pigs was discovered in 1997. Since 1997, sporadic HEV ...

Marker-Assisted Selection And Prediction Of Hybrid Performance In Maize, Buppa Kongsamai Jan 2004

Marker-Assisted Selection And Prediction Of Hybrid Performance In Maize, Buppa Kongsamai

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In this study, MAS was applied to select the superior individuals from a single-cross hybrid population in maize. The 133 single-crosses, developed by randomly crossing between the recombinant inbred lines of the B73xDe811 (F6:7) and Mo17xH99 (F6:8) population, were evaluated in 2001 and 2002. Eight economically important traits were recorded on a plot mean basis. The first study involved the comparison of the predictive ability of four predictive models for assessing genetic values of individual single-crosses for each trait. Four predictive models including principal component regression (PCR) and stepwise regression (STR) with the individual and integrated marker data ...
