Irrigation System Maintenance, Kelly Kopp, Jennie Hoover Nov 2004

Irrigation System Maintenance, Kelly Kopp, Jennie Hoover

All Current Publications

Irrigation system maintenance is necessary to ensure the most efficient use of the water that is being applied. Efficient irrigation is important because over two-thirds of the total water used in the average Utah home is applied to the landscape. With the natural drought cycles that occur in Utah and the growing population, efficient water use is critical. These maintenance recommendations will help you evaluate your irrigation system before using it each spring and also throughout the growing season.

Pastoral Risk Management In Southern Ethiopia: Observations From Pilot Projects Based On Participatory Community Assessments, D. Layne Coppock, Solomon Desta, Seyoum Tezera, Rancis K. Lelo Aug 2004

Pastoral Risk Management In Southern Ethiopia: Observations From Pilot Projects Based On Participatory Community Assessments, D. Layne Coppock, Solomon Desta, Seyoum Tezera, Rancis K. Lelo

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

The Borana pastoral system has come under increasing pressure as human populations grow and per capita availability of resources declines. Livestock exhibit large, periodic die-offs that threaten wealth accumulation and food security. Several types of interventions may improve risk management here. For example, there may be opportunity for some pastoralists to diversify their livelihoods. Here we report on a community-based process involving pilot projects begun since 2000. We have embraced Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and Action Research (AR) as tools for investigation and empowerment of local people. Full PRAs were conducted for semi-settled communities, located near towns, to identify priority ...

Guidelines For Visual Assessment Of Herbage Mass In Pastures, Thomas Griggs, K. Pack Aug 2004

Guidelines For Visual Assessment Of Herbage Mass In Pastures, Thomas Griggs, K. Pack

All Current Publications

This fact sheet provides pasture managers with a technique to improve their abilities to budget forage to livestock and determine amounts of forage to reserve for mechanical harvest. They can also use the technique to estimate harvest efficiency and pasture growth rates, forecast future forage supply and plan adjustments in stocking rate to balance forage supply with livestock demand.

Electronic Manure Handling Process Map, John Harrison, Aditya Toney

All Current Publications

Implementation of an Agriculture Environmental Management System (AEMS) is intended to result in improved environmental performance (Block, 1999; Harrison, 2002). Agriculturalists are generally unfamiliar with the terms ‘aspects and impacts’ (Jackson, Kirschner, Serber, Koelsch, Risse & Bird, personal communication, December 17, 2001).

Analysis Of Phytoplankton Nutrient Limitation In Farmington Bay And The Great Salt Lake, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Amy Marcarelli Jun 2004

Analysis Of Phytoplankton Nutrient Limitation In Farmington Bay And The Great Salt Lake, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Amy Marcarelli

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

The Great Salt Lake is bordered to the south and east by a growing metropolitan area that contributes high nutrients to Farmington Bay. This large bay is eutrophic, and there is concern that continued increases in effluents from the Salt Lake City area could extend to impact the much larger, and currently less productive, Gilbert Bay. This study focused on determining how nutrient supplies might limit, and therefore control, algal populations in Farmington Bay and Gilbert Bay at different salinities. We tested both short and long-term responses of algal growth using laboratory nutrient addition bioassays in the summer and fall ...

University researchers and Extension specialist in 11 states are currently evaluating the impact of voluntary environmental management systems (EMS) for agricultural operations. This evaluation is being conducted through a series of studies with a wide variety of agriculture production operators that voluntarily choose to participate and share information on the design and implementation of their EMSs (Harrison, 2002, and Partnership for Livestock Environmental Management Systems, 2004).

Annual Manure Removal Methods For Manure Storage Facilities, John Harrison May 2004

Annual Manure Removal Methods For Manure Storage Facilities, John Harrison

All Archived Publications

A well-designed manure storage facility must also be well managed to prevent environmental concerns from developing. Probably the single most important requirement in operating and maintaining a manure storage facility is to ensure that the facility does not overflow or discharge. Discharges from manure storage facilities may violate local, state, or federal regulations, result in large fines or penalties, and at the very least, represent a potential environmental hazard. Manure removal from storage according to the storage period selected is the most critical activity in preventing discharge. Many discharge problems have occurred because producers were unable to manage the activities ...
