Systematics Of Dirca (Thymelaeaceae) Based On Its Sequences And Issr Polymorphisms, James A. Schrader, William R. Graves

The genus Dirca consists of three disjunct species of shrubs. Dirca palustris is found in the eastern United States and adjacent Canada; D, occidcntahs is Umited to six counties near the San Francisco Bay in California; and the recently discovered D, mcxicana is known from one isolated population in northeastern Mexico. The three species have been described and classified according to morphological characters, but the morphological evidence does not provide a clear assessment of the relationships among the species. Morphologically D. mexicana most closely resembles D. occidenlalis., but known biogeographical trends raise doubt regarding how the three species are interrelated ...

Compost As A Growth Substrate For Woody Ornamental Nursery Production, Jaime Crocker

Peat is an expensive, environmentally nonrenewable component of media used to grow woody ornamental trees. Leaf compost from the city of Bowling Green is an inexpensive renewable resource that was substituted for peat in soil-less container media. Seeds of three commercially important tree species, Koelreuteria paniculata (goldenraintree), Quercus alba (white oak), and Magnolia grandiflora (southern magnolia) were grown in 473 mL bottomless milk containers for 150 days, then repotted to 3785 mL pots for 90 days. Irrigation system maintenance is necessary to ensure the most efficient use of the water that is being applied. Efficient irrigation is important because over two-thirds of the total water used in the average Utah home is applied to the landscape. With the natural drought cycles that occur in Utah and the growing population, efficient water use is critical. These maintenance recommendations will help you evaluate your irrigation system before using it each spring and also throughout the growing season.

The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture received a grant from the USDA’s Initiative for Future Agriculture and Food Systems (IFAFS) program. The purpose was to help small- and medium-sized farmers and entrepreneurs become more profitable and therefore add stability to the family farm. One approach to doing this is to investigate opportunities to enhance profits by adding value to traditional raw products.

Small-grain cultivar performance tests are conducted each year in Arkansas by the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station , Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences. The tests provide information to companies developing cultivars and/or marketing seed within the state and aid the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in formulating cultivar recommendations for small-grain producers.

Since its inception in 1954, the NC7 Regional Ornamental Plant Trials have evaluated 623 different accessions of woody landscape plants under a wide range of environments across the North Central U.S. and at other locations with similar climatic conditions. The evaluation of replicated field plantings at multiple locations has a long tradition in forestry (Langlet, 1971; Wright, 1976) beginning with common-garden trials of tree populations in the 1700s and leading to the development of modern, replicated designs in Europe in the early 1900s. Use of small grain forage crops for stocker cattle production was extensively evaluated in two separate three-year research projects at the Livestock and Forestry Branch Research Station near Batesville, Ark. The first section of this Research Report presents results of a study in which 216 commercial crossbred steers (Avg. body weights 463 lb) grazed forage of wheat, oats, rye, ryegrass, wheat + rye, wheat + ryegrass, rye + ryegrass, and wheat + rye + ryegrass during the winter and spring months from 1999 through 2002. The rate of leaf appearance and onset of growth in cool season grasses may be influenced by soil moisture potential and exposure to below freezing temperatures. Levels of moisture potential and days exposed to freezing temperatures, which will restrict leaf appearance, are not well defined. Herbicide evaluation studies on rice were conducted in 2003 at the Rice Research and Extension Center near Stuttgart, Ark., in an effort to evaluate new herbicides, herbicide mixtures, and their application timings for weed control efficacy and crop tolerance. Tests Of Suitability Of Overwintering Hosts Of Aphis Glycines: Identification Of A New Host Association With Rhamnus Alnifolia L’Héritier, David J. Voegtlin, Robert J. O'Neil, William R. Graves

Eleven species from the family Rhamnaceae, including both species exotic and native to North America, were tested for their acceptability to the fall migrants of the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura. Two species, Rhamnus cathartica L. andRhamnus alnifolia L’Héritier were accepted and had overwintering eggs deposited on them. Eggs survived the winter, and colonies developed on both hosts in the spring. R. alnifolia is a new overwintering host for the soybean aphid.

Nursery and landscape professionals have introduced many useful non-native woody plants for managed landscapes, but the potential exists for new introductions to escape from cultivation and become pests. The objective of this study was to develop a comprehensive strategy to assess the risk of naturalization of non-native woody plants in Iowa. We examined life-history traits and native distributions of 100 woody plant species, including 28 species known to naturalize in Iowa and 72 other species not known to naturalize in the state.
