Revised Checklist Of North American Mammals North Of Mexico, 1979, J. Knox Jones Jr., Dilford C. Carter, Hugh H. Genoways Dec 1979

Revised Checklist Of North American Mammals North Of Mexico, 1979, J. Knox Jones Jr., Dilford C. Carter, Hugh H. Genoways

Mammalogy Papers: University of Nebraska State Museum

Faunal checklists provide useful ready references for many kinds of endeavors, both in the laboratory and in the field, and are particularly helpful to students. Since publication more than four years ago of a "Revised checklist of North American mammals north of Mexico" (Jones et al., 1975), demand for that list has exceeded the supply set aside for general distribution; additionally, systematic studies of mammals published since 1974 necessitate changes in the list. Primarily for these reasons, a newly revised checklist of mammalian species occurring in the Nearctic to the north of Mexico is here presented. As in this and ...

Variation In Pappogeomys Castanops (Geomyidae) On The Llano Estacado Of Texas And New Mexico, Robert C. Dowler, Hugh H. Genoways Dec 1979

Variation In Pappogeomys Castanops (Geomyidae) On The Llano Estacado Of Texas And New Mexico, Robert C. Dowler, Hugh H. Genoways

Mammalogy Papers: University of Nebraska State Museum

Nongeographic and geographic variation in the yellow-cheeked pocket gopher, Pappogeomys castanops, were analyzed in specimens collected in northwestern Texas and eastern New Mexico. Univariate and multivariate methods of analysis were utilized to assess variation in morphometric characters among 12 samples of P. castanops. Because of significant variation with age, only adult specimens were used in analyses. Adult males were significantly larger than females in all 13 characters studied. Our analyses of geographic variation reveal that those specimens previously assigned to the subspecies P. c. simulans are not sufficiently distinct to warrant subspecific designation.

Predation Of Upland Game And Its Management, Roger Wells Dec 1979

Predation Of Upland Game And Its Management, Roger Wells

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

There is probably no greater topic that elicits greater emotion in public wildlife discussions than that of predation. A variety of groups each with their own particular special interest surround the topic.

Some advocate complete protection of predators on the premise that their activities merely result in a "balance of nature." The opposite viewpoint argue just as strongly for the total elimination of Predators of valued wildlife in order to have greater number for man's enjoyment.

Routine Determination Of Mirex And Photomirex In Fish Tissue In The Presence Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Samuel E. Insalaco Dec 1979

Routine Determination Of Mirex And Photomirex In Fish Tissue In The Presence Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Samuel E. Insalaco

Biology Master’s Theses

A procedure for the routine determination of Mirex and Photomirex in fish tissue is described which provides rapid analysis and confirmation using conventional gas chromatographic/electron capture detection (GC/ECD) methods. Coeluting intereferences (i.e. PCB's) are nitrated al lowing for simple separation from Mirex analogs by column chromatography. In Chinook SaImon tissue (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), PCB removaI averaged 78% and Mirex and Photomirex recoveries were 91% and 86%, respectively. The method has been used successfully for trace analysis of Mirex levels as low as 100 pg.

Mechanism Of Decarboxylation Of Glycine And Glycolate By Isolated Soybean Cells, David J. Oliver Dec 1979

Mechanism Of Decarboxylation Of Glycine And Glycolate By Isolated Soybean Cells, David J. Oliver

David J. Oliver

Isolated soybean leaf mesophyll cells decarboxylated exogenously added [1-14C]glycolate and [1-14C]glycine in the dark. The rate of CO2 release from glycine was inhibited over 90% by isonicotinic acid hydrazide and about 80% by KCN, two inhibitors of the glycine to serine plus CO2 reaction. The release of CO2 from glycolate was inhibited by less than 50% under the same conditions. This indicates that about 50% of the CO2 released from glycolate occurred at a site other than the glycine to serine reaction. The sensitivity of this alternative site of CO2 release to an inhibitor of glycolate oxidase (methyl-2-hydroxy-3-butynoate ...

The In Vitro Cytotoxic Effect Of Toxoplasma Gondii-Activated Macrophages On F1 And F10 B16 Melanoma Cells, Tokunbo Olukayode Yerokun Dec 1979

The In Vitro Cytotoxic Effect Of Toxoplasma Gondii-Activated Macrophages On F1 And F10 B16 Melanoma Cells, Tokunbo Olukayode Yerokun

ETD Collection for AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library

Non-specific cytotoxicity, mediated by Toxoplasma gondii activated macrophages for the F1 and F10 B16 melanoma cells in vitro, was examined in this study. In vitro cytotoxicity was assayed by measuring the release of tritiated thymidine from pre-labeled tumor cells during twenty four-hour and seventy-two hour assay periods. Pre-labeled cells were incubated with peritoneal macrophages obtained from either uninfected C57BL mice used as controls or mice latently infected with the C56 strain of Toxoplasma gondii. There were significant differences observed in the total percent of tritiated thymidine released spontaneously by the F1 and F10 B16 melanoma cells compared to F1 and ...

Potential Economic And Environmental Impacts Of Alternative Sediment Control Policies, Center For Agricultural And Rural Development, Iowa State University, Joseph C. Campbell Dec 1979

Potential Economic And Environmental Impacts Of Alternative Sediment Control Policies, Center For Agricultural And Rural Development, Iowa State University, Joseph C. Campbell

CARD Reports

This study focuses on the interaction of U.S. agricultural exports, regional patterns of farm production, and the problem of agricultural sediment. It also evaluates alternative policies in abating sedimentation of the nation's main river basins. One underlying hypothesis of the study is that changes in agricultural export demands cause shifts in the comparative advantage among producing regions within the United States and alter regional land use patterns, farm incomes, consumer food prices, and soil loss. Given this hypothesis, the study uses a mathematical model and two estimates of the U.S. 1985 agricultural exports to investigate if and ...

Effects Of Fecally Contaminated Feed By Starlings On Growing Swine & Mice, Pat Schuster Dec 1979

Effects Of Fecally Contaminated Feed By Starlings On Growing Swine & Mice, Pat Schuster

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The effects of feed contamination by droppings of starlings (Sturnis vulgaris) on certain growth parameters in swine (Sus scrofa) were measured from January 25 to March 1, 1979 at the Western Kentucky University farm. Weight gain, feed-conversion efficiency and feed rejection by swine fed varying levels of contaminated feed were analyzed and found to be non-significant at the fecal concentrations used.

Laboratory mice (Mus musculus) were fed varying concentrations of starling feces in standard mouse chow; weight gain, feed-conversion efficiency and feed rejection were measured. At 0%, 10%, 25% and 50% concentrations, significant differences in weight gains at the 0 ...

The Life History, Behavior, And Ecology Of Etheostoma Sagitta (Jordan And Swain), John Eldon Lowe Jr

Masters Theses

The life history, behavior, and ecology of Etheostoma sagitta (Jordan and Swain) were studied in the Cumberland River system in Tennessee. Diving equipment was utilized in making observations on macrohabitat, microhabitat, distribution, seasonal and diurnal activity, feeding behavior, migration, territoriality, associated species, competition, and population density and structure. Courtship, reproductive behavior, and diurnal activity were studied primarily in an experimental raceway. Feeding behavior and territoriality were studied in the raceway and in a 77.5-1. (20-gal.) aquarium. Parasites, longevity, age and growth, ova numbers and maturation, sex ratios, and food habitats were examined in the laboratory.

Etheostoma sagitta was found ...

Sublethal Stress In Escherichia-Coli - Function Of Salinity, Ic Anderson, Mw Rhodes, H Kator Dec 1979

Sublethal Stress In Escherichia-Coli - Function Of Salinity, Ic Anderson, Mw Rhodes, H Kator

VIMS Articles

Sublethal stress in Escherichia coli was detected in various test media after exposure (in vitro) to seawater of various salinities. Stress was measured with an electrochemical detection technique and a,-galactosidase assay. Test media included EC medium, medium A-1, and tryptic soy broth modified to contain lactose for /?-galactosidase assay experiments. Stress was defined as the difference between a predicted electrochemical response time calculated for unstarved cells from a standard curve and the observed electrochemical response time for cells starved in seawater. The higher the salinity, the greater the stress for all test media examined. Stress was most pronounced in ...
