Tb33: Utilization Of Amino Acids From Proteins: Manual Of Procedures, Hermon Dehaas, Ellen H. Morse

Technical Bulletins

To meet the protein needs of the newly developing countries and the increasing world population, plant proteins and protein mixtures will be required in larger and larger amounts. The proteins studied in this investigation included an animal and a vegetable protein that are important agricultural products of the United States. While general information about the nutritive quality of these proteins is available, this regional study was designed to contribute to an understanding of the reasons for the quality differences and to provide a basis for formulating protein mixtures of high quality using various protein sources.

Airplane-Seeded Wheat – Aid To Double Cropping, John Watts, S. H. Phillips Dec 1968

Airplane-Seeded Wheat – Aid To Double Cropping, John Watts, S. H. Phillips

Agronomy Notes

Airplane-seeding of wheat has been increasing since its start in 1965 in Fulton County, Kentucky. Over 20,000 acres were seeded in the fall of 1968, with the acreage concentrated in the Purchase and Bowling Green areas.

Farmers report these advantages for aerial seedings: (1) early establishment of small grain; (2) similar seeding cost as compared to drilling; (3) labor use in normal seeding operations diverted to other farm operations.

Dietary Supplementation Of Tarhana With Soya Bean Flour And Fish Protein Concentrate, Tahire O.K. Merdol Dec 1968

Dietary Supplementation Of Tarhana With Soya Bean Flour And Fish Protein Concentrate, Tahire O.K. Merdol

Masters Theses

Protein malnutrition is a problem in a major portion of the world where good quality protein sources are in short supply and expensive. Extensive studies have been carried out in order to improve the protein quality of certain existing foods which may be more abundant in a given community.

In this study the protein quality of a Turkish soup, tarhana, was determined by measuring its Net Protein Utilization (NPU), Diets containing tarhana were fed to rats at a level which gave 10 percent protein. The effect of supplementing tarhana with either soya bean flour or fish protein concentrate on the ...

Some Observations On Maccoa Duck Behaviour, Paul A. Johnsgard Dec 1968

Some Observations On Maccoa Duck Behaviour, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

The recent comprehensive review of Maccoa Duck Oxyura maccoa biology by Clark (1964) has provlded the first detailed summary of the species' reproductive behaviour patterns and other aspects of breeding in this little-studied stiff-tail. It has been evident that the evolutionary relationships of the Maccoa Duck to the other southern hemisphere stiff-tails and the northern species of Oxyura are still uncertain at best, as evidenced by the varied taxonomic treatment that the Maccoa has received from Delacour and Mayr (1945), who regarded it as a race of O. australis, from Boetticher (1952), who consldered it as a race of O ...

Distribution Of The Porcupine, Erethizon Dorsatum, In Mexico, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways

Mammalogy Papers: University of Nebraska State Museum

The first Recent record of the porcupine, Erethizon dorsatum, from Mexico comprised fragmentary remains associated with human occupancy from a cave east of Cuatro Cienegas, Coahuila (Gilmore, 1947 : 158-159). Later, Benson (1953 : 511-512) reported two specimens from western Sonora from < the lower flood plain of the Rio Sonora, close to the Gulf of California >> (one from 6 mi. N Puerto Kino and the other from Rancho Santa Ana, about 45 mi. W Hermosillo), and Dickerman (1962 : 108) recorded the species from Hda. Las Margaritas in northern Coahuila. No additional reports of Recent porcupines from Mexico have come to our attention, and four specimens of Erethizon dorsatum couesi Mearns, 1897, in the Museum of Natural ...

Nutrition Field Observations And Experiences With The Florida State Board Of Health, Bettie Chapman Hawkins Dec 1968

Nutrition Field Observations And Experiences With The Florida State Board Of Health, Bettie Chapman Hawkins

Masters Theses

This report describes and analyzes the observations and experiences of the student during eight weeks of field training with the Division of Nutrition in the Florida State Board of Health. The purpose of the training was to supplement the academic education in public health nutrition at The University of Tennessee and the previous background of the student. The experience was designed to increase her understanding of the function of the Institutional Nutrition Consultant in the total public health program in a state agency.

Through selected readings, conferences, and a planned orientation, data were obtained on the State of Florida; the ...

An Ecotypic Differentiation Of Human And Bovine Fecal Streptococci, With Application To Human Pollution In The Yakima River, Harlen Harvey Johnson

All Master's Theses

It was the purpose of this study to report on the development of a technique for distinguishing human fecal streptococci from bovine fecal streptococci, and to make application of this technique in describing some of the sources of pollution in the Yakima River as contributed by the Wilson Creek drainage system, in the Ellensburg area of Washington.

Mourning Dove Status Report, 1967, James L. Ruos, Duncan Mcdonald

US Fish & Wildlife Publications

Nationwide dove population indexes in the 1967 Mourning Dove Status Report were obtained by essentially the same data gathering and analyzing procedures as in 1966. A refinement was made in the base year index, using the mean of the 1966 and 1967 readings as the base for all States. There was a slight adjustment in physiographic region boundaries.

Notes On Bats From The Mexican State Of Zacatecas, Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones Jr. Nov 1968

Notes On Bats From The Mexican State Of Zacatecas, Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones Jr.

Mammalogy Papers: University of Nebraska State Museum

Much of the Mexican state of Zacatecas lies in the area ascribed to the Mexican Plateau. Along the western border and in the southwest, however, the state encompasses a portion of the Sierra Madre Occidental, and perhaps more importantly, from a zoogeographic view, the Rio Juchipila, a major tributary of the Rio Grande de Santiago, drains the southern "panhandle." The valley of the Juchipila supports tropical vegetation as perhaps do the valleys of several other smaller tributaries of the Rio Grande that barely reach the southern part of the state. The setting of southern Zacatecas suggests, therefore, considerable faunal diversity.

Rhizome And Tiller Development Of Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa Pratensis L.) As Influenced By Photoperiod, Cold Treatment, And Variety, Lowell E. Moser, S. R. Anderson, R. W. Miller Nov 1968

Rhizome And Tiller Development Of Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa Pratensis L.) As Influenced By Photoperiod, Cold Treatment, And Variety, Lowell E. Moser, S. R. Anderson, R. W. Miller

Agronomy & Horticulture -- Faculty Publications

Two controlled environment experiments were designed to study the effect of photoperiod and a cold treatment on rhizome and tiller development of ‘Merion’ and ‘Windsor’ Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) Evidence is given to support the following conclusions:

1. A cold treatment is not essential for rhizome formation. Cold treatments increased tillering but reduced the number of rhizomes.
2. Both initiation and elongation of rhizomes were favored by a 16 or 18-hour photoperiod when compared to a 8- or 12- hour photoperiod.
3. Tillering showed little response to initial photoperiod, although more tillers were formed with a 12-hour than with ...
