Five-Year Survival And Growth Of Northern Red Oak (Quercus Rubra L) Seedlings In Upland Hardwood Stands In South Central Iowa , Robert Edward Bardon Jan 1996

Five-Year Survival And Growth Of Northern Red Oak (Quercus Rubra L) Seedlings In Upland Hardwood Stands In South Central Iowa , Robert Edward Bardon

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A major concern in the management of Quercus rubra is the the difficulty in regenerating stands that have developed dense understories of shade tolerant species. A study was conducted at two locations in south central Iowa to determine the impact over a five year period of using root graded seedlings, understory control, tree shelters, and overstory reduction on establishing underplanted, 1-0, Quercus rubra bare root stock. Relationships between growth or mortality, and photosynthetically active radiation, red to far red light ratio, basal area, average stand diameter, number of trees/hectare, percent stocking, and various combinations of these variables were tested ...

Age-Age Correlations, Trait Correlations, And Wood Property Variation For An Alnus Glutinosa (L.) Gaertn Provenance Study , Terry Lean Robison Jan 1984

Age-Age Correlations, Trait Correlations, And Wood Property Variation For An Alnus Glutinosa (L.) Gaertn Provenance Study , Terry Lean Robison

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Age-age (juvenile-mature) correlations for height, diameter-at breast-height (DBH), volume, specific gravity, and fiber length were determined for a 17 year-old Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. provenance study. The correlations indicated that selection could take place at one-half the rotation age for growth traits, and one-third the rotation age for wood properties. Using early DBH to select for volume at rotation age yielded more gain per year than waiting to select directly for volume at maturity;Trait correlations were positive between growth properties. Correlations between specific gravity and fiber length were mostly positive for single trees, and negative for provenance means. Correlations ...

Genotype X Environment Interaction In European Black Alder (Alnus Glutinosa (L.) Gaertn) , Oghenekome Ukrakpo Onokpise Jan 1984

Genotype X Environment Interaction In European Black Alder (Alnus Glutinosa (L.) Gaertn) , Oghenekome Ukrakpo Onokpise

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A subset of 17 provenances from an on-going range-wide provenance study of European black alder (Alnus glutinosa) was evaluated in three locations (Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin) for growth (total height, height growth rates, diameter and volume) and raw biomass properties (field moisture content, maximum moisture content, specific gravity and stem biomass) as well as leaf tissue nitrogen and flower production;Significant differences were found among provenances for all the traits except bark and field moisture contents. The Iowa location had significantly higher mean performances than either southern Illinois or northern Wisconsin locations. Combined analysis over years and locations showed no ...

Host-Symbiont Interactions Among Frankia Strains And Alnus Open-Pollinated Families , Charles Alvin Maynard Jan 1980

Host-Symbiont Interactions Among Frankia Strains And Alnus Open-Pollinated Families , Charles Alvin Maynard

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Four sources of Frankia endophyte were tested with four seed sources of Alnus spp. host plants in all possible combinations. Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. and Alnus rubra Bong. plants grew better with a spore (-) strain from The Netherlands than with a spore (+) strain from The Netherlands or with either of two strains from the United States; Two Frankia strains, CpN1 and ArI3, were compared as pure culture and crushed nodule derived inocula on two seed sources of A. glutinosa and two seed sources of A. rubra host plants. The A. glutinosa plants treated with pure culture inocula nodulated more quickly ...
