Saudi Arabia and Tucson, Arizona are both surrounded by desert and rely on groundwater. Both places also suffer from similar types of water shortage problems. The average water usage, in gallons per person per day, in Tucson is 160. In contrast, in Saudi Arabia this figure is 260. Respectively, these factors encouraged the researcher to investigate the educational roles in Tucson. The purpose of this study was to identify the perceptions of agriculture students regarding sustainable agriculture practices, issues related to sustainable agriculture and learning/teaching processes. These students were enrolled in a capstone course that involved managing a 2000-acre operation. Fifty-seven students participated in this census study. Participants completed a survey questionnaire and a select group of students answered questions in a focus group interview.;The participants in this study perceived that the sustainable agriculture movement promotes environmental concerns about farming more than economic concerns. In 1993 the University of Costa Rica carried out a needs assessment which indicated a widespread need for in-service professional development for high school agriculture teachers. Information was also collected that indicated areas of interest and concern to teachers and the Ministry of Public Education. Subsequently, the University of Costa Rica's Atlantic Regional Center elected to undertake the development and implementation of professional development programs for agriculture teachers. This dissertation is about the meaning, relevancy, and effectiveness of situated narrative in contemporary Western culture, and particularly about how this mode of message transmission might expand environmentally sustainable behaviors. In-depth interviews with environmental educators and storytellers yielded descriptions of what constitutes ethical behavior and guidelines for how to conduct effective storytelling;Bioregionalism, deep ecology, and ecological feminism were studied to learn salient points and normative behaviors associated with each perspective. The central purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an instructional unit on sustainable agriculture using a computer program as a tool to increase environmental awareness, enhance understanding of environmental problems, and promote the resolution of environmental issues in educational settings. The study was conducted during the fall and winter of the 1989-1990 school year to evaluate the effectiveness of an environmental conservation technology instructional unit. The instructional unit was designed for upper level high school agriculture science technology and marketing students (ASTM).
