Integrating Unmanned Aircraft Systems To Measure Linear And Areal Features Into Undergraduate Forestry Education, Reid Viegut, David Kulhavy, Daniel Unger, I-Kuai Hung, Brian Humphreys

Faculty Publications

The use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in undergraduate forestry education continues to expand and develop. Accuracy of data collection is an important aspect of preparation for "society-ready" foresters to meet the complex sustainable environment managing for ecological, social and economic interests. Hands-on use of a DJI Phantom 4 Pro UAS by undergraduates to measure the length and area of 30 linear features and areal features on Earth's surface were estimated. These measurements were compared (measured within the ArcMap 10.5.2 interface) to hyperspectral Pictometry imagery measured on the web-based interface and the Google Earth Pro interface. Each ...

Integrating Hands-On Undergraduate Research In An Applied Spatial Science Senior Level Capstone Course, David Kulhavy, Daniel Unger, I-Kuai Hung, David Douglass Jan 2015

Integrating Hands-On Undergraduate Research In An Applied Spatial Science Senior Level Capstone Course, David Kulhavy, Daniel Unger, I-Kuai Hung, David Douglass

Faculty Publications

A senior within a spatial science Ecological Planning capstone course designed an undergraduate research project to increase his spatial science expertise and to assess the hands-on instruction methodology employed within the Bachelor of Science in Spatial Science program at Stephen F Austin State University. The height of 30 building features estimated remotely with LiDAR data, within the Pictometry remotely sensed web-based interface, and in situ with a laser rangefinder were compared to actual building feature height measurements. A comparison of estimated height with actual height indicated that all three estimation techniques tested were unbiased estimators of height. An ANOVA, conducted ...

Studies On Water Resources In Forested East Texas, Matthew W. Mcbroom Jan 2013

Studies On Water Resources In Forested East Texas, Matthew W. Mcbroom

Faculty Publications

Intensive silvicultural practices have the potential to negatively impact water resources. The effectiveness of forestry best management practices in minimizing potential water resources impacts should be evaluated. The purpose of this study is to conduct urgently needed research on water quality and quantity problems in forested East Texas.

Use Of Aminocyclopyrachlor For Forestry Site Preparation In The Southeastern U.S., Andrew W. Ezell, Ronnie Turner, Jimmie L. Yeiser Jan 2012

Use Of Aminocyclopyrachlor For Forestry Site Preparation In The Southeastern U.S., Andrew W. Ezell, Ronnie Turner, Jimmie L. Yeiser

Faculty Publications

It is not often that new chemistry is made available for use in forestry applications. Aminocyclopyrachlor is a new active ingredient which may have usefulness as a forestry herbicide. Research using this active ingredient began in 2005 and is continuing in university projects across the South. Both hardwood control efficacy and pine tolerance have been evaluated in these trials. A total of 60 different treatments have been evaluated for use in site preparation applications in Mississippi and Texas. This herbicide is effective on a number of species including some invasive exotics. It will probably not be a stand alone treatment ...

Evaluating Tiffs (Toolbox For Lidar Data Filtering And Forest Studies) In Deriving Forest Measurements From Lidar Data, John Chapman, I-Kuai Hung, Jeff Tippen Aug 2010

Evaluating Tiffs (Toolbox For Lidar Data Filtering And Forest Studies) In Deriving Forest Measurements From Lidar Data, John Chapman, I-Kuai Hung, Jeff Tippen

Faculty Publications

Recent advances in LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology have allowed for the remote sensing of important forest characteristics to be more reliable and commercially available. Studies have shown that this technology can adequately estimate forest characteristics such as individual tree locations, tree heights, and crown diameters. These values are then used to estimate biophysical properties of forests, such as basal area and timber volume. This study assessed the capability of a commercially available program, Tiffs (Toolbox for Lidar Data Filtering and Forest Studies), to accurately estimate forest characteristics, as compared to data collected at the plot level using traditional ...

Forestry And Natural Resources Investment Analysis Via Computer Software, Thomas J. Straka, Steven H. Bullard Jan 2010

Forestry And Natural Resources Investment Analysis Via Computer Software, Thomas J. Straka, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

The valuation of forestry and natural resources investments and projects often present challenging analysis problems that require the use of computer software. Obtaining useful results from such packages are often difficult due to complex user/ program interfaces, while most are also subscriber~based and not freely available.

Perceived Benefits Of Mississippi’S Forestry Best Management Practices, Amanda L. Husak, Stephen C. Grado, Steven H. Bullard, Chuck Jepsen Jan 2003

Perceived Benefits Of Mississippi’S Forestry Best Management Practices, Amanda L. Husak, Stephen C. Grado, Steven H. Bullard, Chuck Jepsen

The primary goal of many nonindustrial private forest (NIPF) landowners, forestry consultants, and timber industry professionals is to increase revenues from their forestland. Most often, increased revenues are a result of harvesting timber stands from the site. However, the chances of increased revenues can be greatly reduced if the stands are improperly managed or voluntary Best Management Practices (BMPs) guidelines are not followed.

Assessing The Quantity And Quality Of Forested Resources In East Texas Using Remotely Sensed Data, Daniel Unger Jan 2003

Assessing The Quantity And Quality Of Forested Resources In East Texas Using Remotely Sensed Data, Daniel Unger

Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVES: Development of new or enhanced remote sensing methodologies for assessing the quantity of east Texas forests and their associated ecosystems. Development of new or enhanced remote sensing methodologies for assessing the quality of east Texas forests and their associated ecosystems. Application of temporal analysis to assess the change in the quantity/quality of east Texas forests and their associated ecosystems over time.

Forval-Online: A Web-Based Forestry Investment Tool, Clay B. Landrum, Steven H. Bullard Jan 2001

Forval-Online: A Web-Based Forestry Investment Tool, Clay B. Landrum, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Over the past decade, timber values have risen considerably, and society is beginning to see timberland for what it is – a valuable capital asset that must be managed properly. Timberlands, however, cannot be subject to an “across the board” management regime. Different sites possess different productive constraints, and the same holds true for landowners and their management goals. Considering the diversity of managers’ and landowners’ analysis needs, the ability to obtain a customized forestry investment analysis is invaluable. “FORVAL-online: A Web-based Forestry Investment Tool” is a project to develop and make widely available an accurate and easy to use forestry ...

Professional obsolescence is a danger facing all foresters. All too many foreste·rs consider their educational commitment to terminate when they earn their degree. The competency of the professional forester can quickly erode if the forester does not develop a personal continuing education program.
