Traffic Noise And Sexual Selection: Studies Of Anthropogenic Impact On Bird Songs And Undergraduate Student Reasoning Of Evolutionary Mechanisms, Sarah Spier

Dissertations & Theses in Natural Resources

Humans have transformed much of the natural landscape and are continuing to do so at an accelerated rate, compromising natural areas that serve as important habitat for many species. Roads impact much of the environment as they fragment habitat and introduce traffic noise into the acoustic environment, deferentially affecting wildlife in roadside habitat. I explored how traffic noise affects the detection of birds based on whether their vocalizations were masked by traffic noise. Masked species detection was not affected by an increase in traffic noise amplitude, while there was a negative effect of traffic noise amplitude on unmasked species detection ...

Ec91-734 Noise ... Sound Without Value (Tractor Sound Levels, 1970-1990), Rollin D. Schnieder Jan 1991

Ec91-734 Noise ... Sound Without Value (Tractor Sound Levels, 1970-1990), Rollin D. Schnieder

Historical Materials from University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension

Oh, for the peace and quiet of the country. Surely you have heard this statement. How true this was in years gone by. Now, however, the country environment is often filled with the noise of thumping cylinders, and turning gears in modern tractors — noises previously associated with cities have moved into rural areas.

What do the words sound and noise mean? Some people refer to sound as something pleasant. For example, a number of tones placed together might result in a beautiful symphony. However, if these notes are played too loudly or off key, they might be referred to as ...

G81-579 Nebraska Tractor Tests, Leonard L. Bashford, Kenneth Von Bargen Jan 1981

G81-579 Nebraska Tractor Tests, Leonard L. Bashford, Kenneth Von Bargen

Historical Materials from University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension

Nebraska tractor tests provide agricultural tractor users with unbiased information on machine performance.

Purpose of the Tests

Nebraska tractor tests are made to provide agricultural tractor users with unbiased information about tractor performance. The test data allows the user to make meaningful comparisons between tractors.

Rb246 Trees And Shrubs For Noise Abatement, David I. Cook, David F. Van Haverbeke Jan 1971

Rb246 Trees And Shrubs For Noise Abatement, David I. Cook, David F. Van Haverbeke

Historical Materials from University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension

Excessive noise is a form of environmental pollution. The continual increase in the community noise level during the past two decades indicates a future noise problem comparable to the current air pollution problem of our large industrial centers.

Trees and other forms of vegetation are known to have some effect on the transmission of sound but precise information on their use as noise screens is rather meager. In this study, we attempted to derive accurate, useful information for the above purpose, and to add to knowledge about outdoor sound propagation. Actual plantings of trees and shrubs in the form of ...
