Associations Between Income, Acculturation, Country Of Origin, And Type Ii Diabetes Among African Immigrants To Ontario, Canada, Girma Aman Goshe Jan 2019

Associations Between Income, Acculturation, Country Of Origin, And Type Ii Diabetes Among African Immigrants To Ontario, Canada, Girma Aman Goshe

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Diabetes has become a longstanding public health challenge around the world. Over the last 3 decades, the number of people with Type II diabetes (T2DM) has grown to an epidemic level in Canada. Prior research indicated African immigrants residing in Ontario, Canada experienced a 2-4 times higher prevalence of T2DM than Canadian-born individuals. The social determinants of health theoretical framework guided this study assessing the relationship of the risk factors with T2DM. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was employed using the 2007-2014 Canadian Community Health Survey data. The random sample included 1,526 African immigrants residing in Ontario, Canada. Descriptive, bivariate ...

Investigating Impacts Of Altered Central Metabolism On Ovarian Function, Ahmad Abdulrahman Al-Shaibi Jan 2016

Investigating Impacts Of Altered Central Metabolism On Ovarian Function, Ahmad Abdulrahman Al-Shaibi

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mammalian reproduction is highly dependent on the ovary. Ovarian health is crucial for the health of the female and the offspring. Observations of the timing of puberty and ovarian function reveal a major role for the metabolic status of the female on reproductive function. Many metabolic signals such as leptin, insulin, and LPS influence ovarian function as they participate in metabolic stress. All of these signals cross pathways at PI3K. Obesity, the accumulation of excessive fat, is an international health concern of wide prevalence. It causes an increase in circulating leptin, insulin, and LPS, and is associated with numerous reproductive ...

The Role Of D-Raf In The Terminal Class Signal Transduction Pathway In Drosophila Melanogaster , Kwang-Hyun Baek Jan 1995

The Role Of D-Raf In The Terminal Class Signal Transduction Pathway In Drosophila Melanogaster , Kwang-Hyun Baek

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation describes the characterization of D-raf-mediated signal transduction in the establishment and elaboration of pattern in Drosophila melanogaster. D- raf is the Drosophila homologue of the human Raf-1 proto-oncogene. As a member of the Drosophila Torso (Tor) signal transduction cascade, D-raf acts to define cellular fates at the embryonic poles. Here we show that the serine/threonine kinase activity of D-raf is required for propagation of the Tor signal and that human Raf-1 can substitute for D-raf in this pathway. We identified two serine phosphorylation sites (S388 and S743) and found that serine or its phosphorylation at site 743 ...
