Green Roof Biodiversity In Design: Influence Of Local And Contextual Attributes On Bird Usage, Henry Narigon Jan 2013

Green Roof Biodiversity In Design: Influence Of Local And Contextual Attributes On Bird Usage, Henry Narigon

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This purpose of this research is to identify how species of birds use urban green roofs in Iowa with the intent to eventually develop a set of guidelines for optimizing habitat on green roofs. Ten green roofs were observed for bird usage five times each between May to August, 2013 for a total of fifty observations. Birds were identified by species and their behavior was recorded during the duration of the observations. Data shows that birds use green roofs for a number of uses including foraging and gathering nest material. Bird diversity data was then compared with both green roof ...

Mechanisms Altering Exotic-Native Proportions In Plant Communities, And Impacts On Biodiversity And Ecosystems, Leanne M. Martin Jan 2013

Mechanisms Altering Exotic-Native Proportions In Plant Communities, And Impacts On Biodiversity And Ecosystems, Leanne M. Martin

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the causes and consequences of variation in species composition and diversity across space and time are basic questions in ecology that have strong implications for conservation and restoration. However, exotic-dominated ecosystems, in which species with potentially novel interactions occur, are altering the context in which we ask these questions. The work presented here tested for the first time whether 1) experimental community assembly history manipulations of the seeds of native species could alter species composition, diversity, and ecosystem measures in grasslands dominated by exotic species, and 2) whether exotic-dominated grasslands differ from native-dominated grasslands for multiple aspects of diversity ...
