Youth sport provides a valuable environment in which children can develop their motor and psychosocial skills, learn how to be “coached”, and become part of a team (Goodway & Robinson, 2015). This topic is important because decisions to specialize too young can impact the lives of young athletes in terms of their physiological and psychological health. Students today seem less likely to participate in physical education class because they are either disinterested, unmotivated, or are disengaged in the activity. At the secondary level, students’ disengagement in class may be due to lack of motivation. This synthesis demonstrates the positive effects of music on exercise. It focuses on the potential benefits of listening to music during exercise. It uses a theoretical framework focusing on the dissociative effect of music resulting in reduced perceived exertion, accompanied by greater output, enhanced performance, improved skill and improved mood. It also looks at the effects of variable intermediaries of the tempo and the volume of the music being used. The selected studies for this synthesis describe barriers and facilitators that influence physical activity levels in youth ages 7-19. Previous research has been conducted on the concept of coaching styles and their impact on the motivation and performance of athletes, with results suggesting that the impact can be extremely significant. In education there are many factors outside of the classroom that can have an impact on student motivation; as a result school districts offer athletic and extracurricular activities that help promote learning and student success. Using the TaeKwonDo Institute’s Character Reward Program, this thesis project examines the relationship between after school program involvement and student motivation.
