The purpose of this synthesis was to examine the effects of physical activity on cognitive function. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to study the effects of physical activity on cognitive function in adolescents and adults, what types of physical activity impact cognitive function, as well as to determine the effects that physical activity has on people with Parkinson’s disease.

Low perceived energy and a decline in cognitive performance throughout the day are common issues, though exercise and food consumption are suggested to improve mood and cognition. The present study compares effects of acute exercise to consuming sugar on mood, energy, and cognitive performance. Subjects underwent blood glucose testing, completed an Abbreviated Profile of Mood States Questionnaire, and Automated Operation Span (OSPAN) and Digit Span tests to measure memory and attention. Early detection of cognitive impairment allows for earlier treatment, potentially slowing or halting cognitive decline. Despite our best efforts, anterior cruciate ligament injury rates remain high in many athletic populations. Over the past two decades, investigations have sought to identify the potential role cognition may play in the functional injury mechanism. Across the body of literature, there is a general consensus that rapid, reactive environments found in team sports increase injury risk. But the precise biomechanical change in lower extremity control has been inconsistently identified across multiple investigations.
