Relationships Between Throwing Velocity And Selected Kinematics In Youth Baseball Players, Nick Hedgecock Jan 2018

Relationships Between Throwing Velocity And Selected Kinematics In Youth Baseball Players, Nick Hedgecock

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

Research investigating baseball position players has been limited primarily to pitchers. The current study examined several kinematic variables and their relationship with ball velocity in middle and high school-aged baseball players using two-dimensional (2D) motion analysis. The purpose of this study was to investigate these relationships using 2D motion analysis and compare these results to those reported in the literature using 3D analysis. Thirteen baseball players (15.31 ± 1.25 yrs., 72.29 ± 10.79 kg and 177.09 ± 5.59 cm tall) participated in the study. A video camera was used to record three throwing trials for each participant ...

Upper Extremity Strength And Power Field Tests As Predictors Of Pole Vault Performance In Female Collegiate Athletes, Carmen Schluter Jan 2016

Upper Extremity Strength And Power Field Tests As Predictors Of Pole Vault Performance In Female Collegiate Athletes, Carmen Schluter

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"The purpose of this study was to determine if select upper-extremity strength and power field tests, and the test battery, predict pole vault performance in female pole vaulters. There is very little research on female pole vault athletes, specifically non-elite athletes. Field tests previously shown to be predictive of performance in males were examined to determine if they were also predictive for females. Four tests were used (8 lb backwards medicine ball (MB) throw, 3 m seated rope pull, three pull-ups for time, and maximum pull-ups) to determine if pole vault performance (season personal record for each athlete) could be ...

Acute Effects Of Dynamic Stretching On Flexibility And Agonist-Antagonist Muscle Activity, Lance T. Beisley Jan 2015

Acute Effects Of Dynamic Stretching On Flexibility And Agonist-Antagonist Muscle Activity, Lance T. Beisley

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Flexibility is an important determinant of health and important in sport performance. ADS and SPST are the methods most often used in training flexibility for sport. Although ADS appears to dominate SPST in measures of power and agility, the mechanisms are unclear. The purpose of this study was to delineate the effects of ADS on AROM and agonist-antagonist mean and peak EMG. The ADS protocol involved three sets of ten repetitions of leg kicks while in the supine position with the pelvis and contralateral limb fixed in extension. Participants moved the leg at the hip in a kicking motion to ...

Different Warm Up Protocols On Immediate Golf Drive Performance In Recreational Golfers, Emily Travis Jan 2015

Different Warm Up Protocols On Immediate Golf Drive Performance In Recreational Golfers, Emily Travis

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"It has been recommended that golfers perform a warm up routine before playing. Currently, the optimal warm up routine to improve performance of a maximal golf drive is not clear, however, research does recommend active-dynamic stretching as opposed to static stretching during warm up. Currently, there have been no studies conducted using recreational golfers to research functional resistance exercises towards immediate performance of golf. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of three different warm up protocols in recreational golfers on immediate golf performance of a maximal golf drive by measuring maximum club head speed (MCHS), maximal ...

Comparing The Acute Effects Of Elastic Resistance Bands On Kinetics And Kinematics During The Bench Press Exercise, Blake Baxter Jan 2014

Comparing The Acute Effects Of Elastic Resistance Bands On Kinetics And Kinematics During The Bench Press Exercise, Blake Baxter

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Elastic resistance training is becoming very popular in the strength and conditioning realm and is used at the collegiate and professional levels for various sports. Elastic resistance training has been shown to increase the force, velocity, and power compared to traditional free weight movements. The purpose of this study was to determine if a specific loading condition could increase both kinetic and kinematic variables within a bench press. To test this, two loading conditions (15% and 25% of 1RM) were used and each resistance load was added to a base of 60% of 1RM free weights. Twelve recreationally trained male ...

Determining The Relationship Between C-Reactive Protein, Visceral Fat, And The Metabolic Syndrome Risk Factors, Evan Hilberg Jan 2013

Determining The Relationship Between C-Reactive Protein, Visceral Fat, And The Metabolic Syndrome Risk Factors, Evan Hilberg

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a diagnosis that includes several clinical criteria that indicate a higher than normal risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Central adiposity is considered a risk factor for the MetS and is also associated with increased mortality and morbidity. The use of ultrasonography (US) has made it possible to measure the amount of visceral fat (VF) in a cost-effective and non-invasive manner as opposed to computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. C-reactive protein (CRP), an acute phase inflammatory marker, has been associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease and has been shown to have a relationship with ...

Comparison Of Rpe Between Atm And Sww At 50%, 60%, And 70% Hrr, Natalie J. Hughs Jan 2012

Comparison Of Rpe Between Atm And Sww At 50%, 60%, And 70% Hrr, Natalie J. Hughs

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"The purpose of this study was to compare RPE between ATM and SWW at 50%, 60%, and 70% HRR in a healthy adult population. Fifteen subjects (7 male, 8 female) performed both ATM and SWW at each pre-determined % HRR for a total of four days. The participants attended two familiarization sessions in which they practiced protocol and were taught the RPE scale. Each participant was scheduled for two testing sessions (one for the ATM and one for SWW) after the familiarization where they conducted the testing protocol of two minutes steady-state HR at each personalized % HRR. Within the final 10 ...

Mental Toughness, Servant Leadership, And The Collegiate Distance Runner, Christopher S. Hammer Jan 2012

Mental Toughness, Servant Leadership, And The Collegiate Distance Runner, Christopher S. Hammer

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Mental toughness is commonly associated with successful performance in the realm of athletics. However, despite the prevalence of its usage, the concept remains somewhat ambiguous in its definition and practical application. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between mental toughness and running performance amongst collegiate distance runners, a population that has yet to be the center of a mental toughness investigation. Of additional interest was to determine how a coach's servant leadership attributes interacts with athletes' mental toughness. Participants (n = 334) were males and females from 64 collegiate track teams from all divisions of the ...

Effect Of Game Activities On Manual Dexterity In Older Adults, Jael J. Hagerott Jan 2012

Effect Of Game Activities On Manual Dexterity In Older Adults, Jael J. Hagerott

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of game activities on manual dexterity performance iri older adults. Seventeen participants (mean age 84.3 years) from local assisted- and independent-living retirement communities were randomly assigned to an experimental or control group. Experimental group participants played selected game activities three days per week for an average of 34.6 minutes per game for a six-week period. Both control and experimental group participants completed the Purdue Pegboard as a pre- and post-test assessment of manual dexterity performance. A 2 X 2 repeated measures mixed ANOVA conducted for each subtest of ...
