  • Understand that soil is composed of inorganic and organic solid material, water, and air.·Investigate the properties of the inorganic solid components of soil: sand, silt, and clay.
  • Recognize that varying proportions of sand, silt, and clay in a soil impact the soil’s ability to hold and transmit water. Experimentally determine the soil texture of a local soil sample.
  • Determine the chemical composition of a local soil sample for pH, nitrate, phosphorus, and potassium levels.
  • Analyze a given soil’s ability to support crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, and oats.
  • Provide recommendations for amending a given soil ...

Biological Variation, Imsa Fusion Jan 2019

Biological Variation, Imsa Fusion

An Epidemiological Approach to Addressing Food Insecurity

Objectives:

  • Identify different phenotypes of corn (maize) kernels.
  • Use ratios and sampling to determine which of two different ears of corn is most likely to have produced a given sample of kernels.
  • Use Punnett Squares to determine the genotypes of the “parents” that produced the different kernel samples.
  • Compare and contrast traditional selective breeding techniques with genetically engineering a desired trait in corn.
  • Model the regulation of gene expression in a hypothetical cell.
  • Discuss the potential role that epigentic variation may play in improving corn crops of the future.

Food Safety After Fukushima: Scientific Citizenship And The Politics Of Risk, Nicolas Sternsdorff-Cisterna Oct 2018

Food Safety After Fukushima: Scientific Citizenship And The Politics Of Risk, Nicolas Sternsdorff-Cisterna

UH Press Book Previews

The triple disaster that struck Japan in March 2011 forced people living there to confront new risks in their lives. Despite the Japanese government’s reassurance that radiation exposure would be small and unlikely to affect the health of the general population, many questioned the government’s commitment to protecting their health. The disaster prompted them to become vigilant about limiting their risk exposure, and food emerged as a key area where citizens could determine their own levels of acceptable risk.

Food Safety after Fukushima examines the process by which notions about what is safe to eat were formulated after ...

Eliminating Writer’S Block: Flipped Classroom Meets Thinkspace, Janet Johnson, Maren Wolff, Samantha Pritchard, Holly Bender, Kajal Madeka

ThinkSpace and Open TBL Presentations

This video interview elaborates the methodology that was presented at a Poster session at the Food & Nutrition Conference and Expo at Chicago, Oct 21 - 24, 2017.

Background: Students find writing the personal statement to be a challenging and anxiety-producing aspect of the internship application. We previously implemented Flipped Classroom and small group learning approaches into the Foundations of Dietetics course. While these strategies facilitated peer feedback on personal statements, students lacked a structured system for providing comments and were limited with in-class time to provide feedback.

Methods: Using ThinkSpace, a web-based active learning tool, students completed guided reflections in class ...

Plantbot Genetics Presents: The Moth Project, Augustana College, Rock Island Illinois

2015-2016

PlantBot Genetics Inc. presents an engaging overview of second shift pollinators such as the moth, along with recent advances in self-pollinating robo-plants. The Moth Project highlights inspired responses to the decline of the honeybee and the hope that Moths and PlantBots will step in and save the day.

As consumers, we no longer know the real price of our food. Present food distribution systems are so complicated that it is unrealistic to expect consumers will make responsible choices based on the knowledge at hand. We encourage people to think more about their food, where it comes from, and where it ...
